2001 CROSS COUNTRY SEASON PREVIEW
WOMEN RETURN THREE TOP RUNNERS; MEN BRING IN
FOUR NEWCOMERS
PARKVILLE, MO--Only three runners from the 2000 women's cross country team are returning for the 2001 season. Seven others who will participate in their first season for head coach Brian Renshaw will join returners Crystal Bethel, Jessica Ferguson and Shannon Turner.
Coach Renshaw expects improvement and leadership from sophomore Crystal Bethel, a 2001 NAIA All-American in track and field. Junior captain Jessica Ferguson, a native of Nassau, Bahamas, had
an impressive off-season as she was named the Most Outstanding Female Athlete in the Bahama Games in July. In 2000, Ferguson and teammate Shannon Turner traded the lead position for Park. Ferguson ran the team's best time in the 5000-meter, conquering NAIA Mid-States course in 19 minutes, 22.9 seconds. At the end of the season, however, Turner was the sole representative of the Pirates at the NAIA National Championship meet in Kenosha,
Wisc. In the qualifying meet, Bethel, Ferguson and Turner finished within three seconds of each other; Turner, with a time of 20 minutes, seven seconds, earned a spot in the national meet. Despite a region coaches poll that predicted Park to finish fourth, the Pirates came in second behind Region V champion Baker University.
According to Renshaw, the addition of freshman Kasey Scott from Stockton, Mo., and Kendricka Kemp from Nassau, Bahamas, Park should again challenge Baker for the Region V women's cross country title.
For the men's cross country program, sophomore Mabior Atem will lead a group of five returners and four newcomers. Atem was one of two qualifiers from the men's program to compete in the NAIA National Championship meet in 2000. As a freshman, he finished 134th, completing the 8000-meter course in 27 minutes, 41.7 seconds. Coach Brian Renshaw also expects returners Jason Williams, a junior from The Bahamas; Jake Kidd, a sophomore from Independence, Mo., and Robert
Pavlovic, a senior from Croatia, to impact the group's team scoring. Park is scheduled to compete in a total of eight meets this season, one more than was scheduled in 2000.

2001 WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL SEASON
PREVIEW
PIRATES ADD DEPTH TO ALREADY IMPRESSIVE LINEUP
PARKVILLE, MO--One look at the 2001 women's volleyball team proves that, in just her second season, head coach Peggy Tuter has built one of the most skilled, balanced groups in recent years at Park. Seniors Erin Holt, Tiffani
Theiss, and April Savage embody many of the characteristics that Tuter has charted for her program: flawless passing, defensive intensity and team-first leadership makes for exciting, successful volleyball.
Holt, a two-time NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete, was granted a hardship request, enabling her to compete in the 2001 season. A stellar setter, she was honored as Region V Setter of the Week in 2000, a season during which she led the Pirates with 462 assists in only 79 games (5.8 A/G).
Danielle Wade, Park's only representative on the NAIA All-Region V Team in 2000, is noticeably absent from the Pirates' lineup this season. Wade was the team's kill leader with 291 (2.4 K/G) last year. As a fifth year senior, she will join first year assistant coach Melissa Quint and former teammate Jeanine Herrman in Tuter's coaching staff.
Tuter will utilize newcomer Tenysha Brown, a 6-0 middle hitter from Kansas City, Mo., to protect the net. Returner Kim Vernon, a junior from Camden Point, Mo., and freshman Jennifer Higgins, both 5-10, will shoulder responsibility for middle hitting.
According to Tuter, Brianne Lehr, a junior outside hitter from Blue Springs, Mo., will make a contribution as a "great team player" who is very vocal, intense, and who is an exceptional passer. Jessica
Silliman, Terra Van Duine , Christina Giamalva, Nicci Ward, Emily Heskin and Jilian Creighton will add depth and skill to the perimeter and back-row as first year players in the program.
Sizing up the 2001 schedule, Tuter cites the scheduled tournaments as the most challenging obstacle. The College of Saint Mary Tournament Omaha, Neb., features a particularly solid group of teams; Park is the only unranked team involved according to the NAIA Preseason
Poll.

NAIA WOMEN'S SOCCER
PARK UNIVERSITY MATCH WITH WILLIAM JEWELL PITS AREA TALENT, ONLY REMAINING UNBEATEN TEAMS IN NAIA REGION V
PARKVILLE, MO-Saturday, September 29, the Park University Pirates will host William Jewell College in women's soccer at Julian Field in Parkville, Mo. The match, set to kick-off at 2:00 p.m., features the perennially strong Pirates, who own an undefeated record of 8-0-0 and who have outscored opponents this season 26-1. William Jewell, in only
six matches, has dominated its opponents 45-2, nearly twice the margin the Pirates have enjoyed in eight games. The
6-0-0 Cardinals, led by freshman Kristin Neher and sophomore Stefanie Carson, have more offensive punch than head coach Chris Cissell has seen in his three years with William Jewell.
Park sophomore Pam Bedzrah and junior forward Jennifer Greco will test William Jewell's defense. Bedzrah leads Park with 10 goals; Greco has the team-lead with seven assists. Greco and William Jewell's Neher were each named NAIA Region V Players of the Week in the first two weeks of the season.
Saturday's match-up appears to be the first ever
between Park and William Jewell in women's soccer--Park's
opponent-by-opponent records detail every match for the last eight
seasons, assuring that the two programs haven't met since 1993. Park
initiated its women's soccer program in 1989; William Jewell added the
sport one year later in 1990.
"In the past, Jewell has not been a strong
team," said Park head coach Scott Bowen. "That's not the case
any longer. The match Saturday will be Park's hardest test of the
season so far. We'll have to dig in and put everything on the field
we have to offer to come away with a win. Everybody I've talked to
has said that Jewell is the team to beat this year and I believe
them. I also believe that Park is the team to beat this year.
So Saturday will be a tough game, but I'm ready to play."

PARK STAYS
UNBEATEN; SQUEAKS BY BELLEVUE, 1-0
PARKVILLE, MO--The extra-defensive
strategy of Bellevue University slowed the Park University women's
soccer team, but it couldn't stop them. The Pirates, who improved
to 8-0-0, unleashed
29 shots at Julian Field Saturday afternoon; just one made it past
Bellevue keeper Shannon Franks. Park's defense, which has allowed
just one goal in eight matches this season, remained impenetrable,
turning away five shots by Bellevue. Park sophomore Bridget Duhme,
a 1999 graduate of North Kansas City High School, earned the
shutout. The Pirates' lone goal was knocked in by Marilyn Boucher,
a sophomore midfielder from Longuevil Quebec, in the 22nd minute.
Haley Daniel made the assist. Park is idle until Saturday,
September 29, when the Pirates host the William Jewell College Cardinals
(4-0-0) at Julian Field. That match will kick-off at 2:00 p.m.

2001 WOMEN'S SOCCER SEASON PREVIEW
PARK TO PLAY EIGHT OF FIRST NINE
MATCHES ON THE ROAD
PARKVILLE, MO--In the season ahead, the Park University women’s soccer program will turn
to five juniors and one senior who have been in the program since their freshman
seasons. Park will match up with some of the top programs in the NAIA, including
Lindsey Wilson, College of Saint Mary, and Region V powerhouse Lindenwood
University. With just one losing season in the thirteen-year history of the
women’s soccer at Park, this year’s relatively young team is expected by
first year head coach Scott Bowen to respond to the fierce competition with
poise and integrity,
much like they always have.
Remarkably, just one out of Park’s first nine games will be
played in Parkville. Park’s first test is a two-game tournament in Rapid City,
S.D., 700 miles from home. The Pirates will match up against Concordia
University and National American University, a team that Park narrowly defeated,
3-2, at Julian Field last season. The team will then return to Parkville for
their first home match of the season against Region V opponent Baker University
on September 5 before further testing their road legs as they play their next
six games on the road.
As
part of their longest home stand of the season, Park will meet McKendree College
on Sunday, October 7. During Harvest Festival-Homecoming Weekend, the Pirates
will host Lindsey Wilson College and College of Saint Mary in the first annual
Jamie Hemingway Memorial Tournament. The tournament is a tribute to head coach
Jamie Hemingway and team members Cindy Anderson and Melanie Meyer whose lives
ended tragically in an automobile accident on November 9, 2000. Park’s regular
season schedule is capped with tough road matches against Lindenwood and Newman;
on October 20, the team will host Rockhurst University while celebrating the
program’s Senior Day.
Head coach Scott Bowen and first-year assistant coach Monica Wade, a 1997
Park graduate, expect great contributions from several newcomers this year.
Haley Daniel, a 2001 Kansas City Metro Scholar-Athlete, is a freshman who owns
one of the most accurate and powerful shots on the team, according to Bowen.
Traci Kesterson, from Olathe, Kan., is a transfer from Johnson County Community
College. As a junior, she will contribute to the team’s leadership from the
midfield. Other notable additions include Megan Bernard, a freshman from Fort
Osage High School in Independence, Mo., and Laura Metcalf, a highly regarded
freshman from Liverpool, England, who was a member of the U-18 English National
Team.
Key returners from last season are sophomore Pam Bedzrah (10 G, 2 A) and
junior Janie Benoit (4 G, 2 A). Tunde Nemeth, Marilyn Boucher, Keri Burhman,
Lisa Flood and Jennifer Miller will fortify the backfield in front of keeper
Jenni Visala.

2001 MEN'S SOCCER SEASON PREVIEW
PIRATES SPRING OUT OF THE GATES AT
NATIONAL AMERICAN UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT
PARKVILLE, MO--The 2001 Park University men's soccer team is poised to steam headstrong into
Region V competition. Before encountering their first Region V rival of the
season, however, the Pirates will lace up their boots against four non-region
opponents, including National American University and Huron University. Park
opens with three road matches this season before returning to the haven of
Julian Field on September 8. In 2000, Park went just 4-3 on their home turf; to
ensure a successful season, the Pirates must improve their record in Parkville,
especially against Region V opponents. On Sunday, September 9, Park will square
off against former American Midwest Conference rival, McKendree College in the
final game of the two-day Park Classic Tournament which also features Huron and
Benedictine.
Last year Park advanced to the Region V championship match where, just one
game away from advancing to the NAIA National Championship Tournament for the
first time since 1984, Park was defeated by Lindenwood, 2-0. In the regional
semifinal versus Columbia College, Park avenged a disappointing 3-2 regular
season home loss, to knock off the top-seeded Cougars (then ranked #5
nationally), 2-1, in double-overtime. In the end, the men's program came home
with a record of 10-7-1 (.556), notching its sixth straight winning season and
honoring the graduation of six seniors.
Significant changes from the 2000 roster include the departure of the team's
top-two point scorers in Garet Doolittle (4 G, 6 A, 14 PTS) and Simon De'ath (14
P, 4 A, 32 PTS). De'ath left to pursue academic work in Australia; Doolittle,
who started every game for four consecutive seasons at Park, celebrated his
graduation in May 2001. Levi Young, a notably vocal leader in the Pirates’
backfield, along with Doolittle and four others, also graduated from last year's
team. Young, a two-time NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete, will work the
sidelines as the assistant to first-year head coach Efrem Shimlis.
"Our goal this season is to develop a solid team that plays with
confidence, great skills, passion and respect for the game, fellow teammates and
opponents," said Shimlis.
Shimlis and his staff will pursue this goal with key newcomers Justin
Boersma,
a midfielder from Canada; Zubi Ufoh, a solid midfield presence from Nigeria; and
Darnell Ross, a forward from Trinidad. Returning upperclassmen Dave Foster and
Adrian Callaghan will contribute as leaders to this year's squad.
