BETHEL LEADS WOMEN; ATEM, KIDD PACE MEN IN 2003 CROSS COUNTRY SEASON
2003 Women's Cross Country PreviewCross country seniors in 2003 (left to right): Crystal Bethel, Jake Kidd and Mabior Atem.
Park University's 2002-2003 Female Student-Athlete of the Year, Crystal Bethel, a senior from Nassau, Bahamas, brings considerable leadership and poise to the women's program, as the only senior on the 2003 roster.  Bethel will chase her lifetime best performance of 19 minutes, 30 seconds, established last season at the Baker University Open.  She'll be followed closely by sophomores Amanda Geno and Amy Musil who return as letterwinners from the 2002 season.
Bethel is also a multi-year NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete.  In 2002, she finished 12th at the NAIA National Championship, completing the course in 19 minutes, 59 seconds, just behind Park teammate and 2003 graduate Jessica Ferguson.  Ferguson and Bethel finished second and third respectively at the 2002 MCAC Conference Championship meet as the Pirates claimed the conference title.

"The most important aspect of this season will be the ability of our student-athletes to be consistent in their training and growing process," said Renshaw.  Renshaw's young team consists of four freshmen—Dione Friends, Helen Franchon, Tatum Anderson and Rebecca Tackett, and six sophomores—Geno, Musil, Lanessa Hubbard, Haley Daniel, Reagan Mackey and Adhel Riak.  Bethel, the program's lone upperclassman in 2003, will lead the Pirates in their pursuit of a repeat conference championship and return to regional contention on September 6 at the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence, Kan.
2003 Men's Cross Country Preview
Seniors Mabior Atem and Jake Kidd will lead the Park University men's cross country team in 2003 as they defend their MCAC title.  Freshmen Leon Bowman from Moreno Valley, Calif., and Luis Guzman from Kansas City, Mo., add depth to the group of six returning letterwinners from 2002.
In 2002, Atem was the program's lone representative at the NAIA National Championship meet.  He finished ninth overall, earning NAIA All-American honors as he improved on his Region IV Championship time of 25 minutes, 45.56 seconds by a full seven seconds.  It was his third consecutive appearance in the national championship meet.

Head coach Brian Renshaw acknowledged the first two meets of the season—at the Kansas Invitational on September 6 and at the Missouri Southern Stampede on September 20—as the toughest events of the season.  Among the field of competing schools will be NCAA Division I power Arkansas.  Returning sophomores Keith Longuski, James Shatto and Joshua McKinzie are anticipated to round out the Pirates' promise to post increasingly competitive team scores due to the program's improved depth.

VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM SETS SIGHTS ON MCAC CONTENTIONPark University seniors in 2003 (left to right): Bianca Hendricks, Nyala Cheirs, Kim Vernon, and Veronica Mobley.
PARKVILLE, MO—After a rigorous preseason regimen, Park University head coach Peggy Tuter, now entering her fourth season with the Pirates, affirmed a promising outlook for 2003 season.  Citing the loss of just one senior—Brianne Lehr—from the  2002 roster, Tuter has mixed ten returners with three experienced, highly touted newcomers: Sugglis Chinchilla, a 6-0 junior outside hitter from Merida, Venezuela;  Veronica Mobley, a 6-1 right side hitter from Sao Paulo, Brazil; and Meghaan Fountain, a 5-10 sophomore middle hitter from Gladstone, Mo.  According to Tuter, Chinchilla is "an explosive outside hitter.  She will be an impact player for us."
Altogether, the roster is marked by considerable improvements in size and depth.  The 2002 kill and block-leading tandem of Jilian Creighton (284 kills, 88 blocks) and Tenysha Brown (280 kills, 110 blocks) return to reinforce the Pirates' attacking presence.  Junior outside hitter Jessica Silliman also returns to the lineup; in 2001, she led the team with 284 kills, the same number posted by team-leader Creighton last season.
Setters Bianca Hendricks, a senior from Keokuk, Iowa, and Terra Van Duine, a junior from Blue Springs, Mo., combined for 1,000 assists in 2002.  They will share the bulk of ball-placement responsibilities in the season ahead, setting up Park's deep front line.
Tuter noted that the MCAC Conference schedule holds the key to their season, with perennial powers Bellevue University and College of St. Mary appearing on Park's schedule twice, along with much improved programs at Peru State College, Newman University, Haskell Indian Nations University and College of the Ozarks.  The Pirates will host the first ever Park University Classic Tournament October 10-11; the two-day event will feature all nine programs in the MCAC Conference.
In the season ahead, the Pirates are focused on improving their overall record and contending for a place in the top half of the conference.  In Tuter's tenure, the Pirates have been notably successful in five-game matches.  In 2002, Park was 5-2 in five-game matches; the team is 12-5 in such matches during Tuter's three seasons.  "We have adopted the (Kansas City) Royals' attitude of believing," said Tuter.  "Our schedule is pretty balanced.  The team is working toward a winning season, with a place in the conference tournament.
"I am optimistic about this season," Tuter continued. "We are much more mature than we were in the last two seasons.  The freshmen from 2001 are now juniors, and with the addition of Sugglis (Chinchilla) and Veronica (Mobley), we have an improved, goal-oriented group.  The team is working hard at looking forward and not looking back."
Park University hosts William Penn University on Wednesday, September 3, at 7:00 p.m. to open the 2003 season.

WOMEN'S PROGRAM STARTS OUT SEVENTH NATIONALLY; SETS OUT TO DEFEND REGION IV TITLE
PARKVILLE, MO—Park University women’s soccer is ranked seventh in the nation according to the NAIA Preseason poll released this afternoon. The Pirates enjoyed 262 voting points and climbed five spots from their final post at the end of the 2002 season. Park went 18-4-1 last season, claiming the Region IV Championship and ascending to the NAIA NationalPark University Seniors in 2003 (left to right): Tunde Nemeth, Lisa Flood, Pam Bedzrah, Marilyn Boucher, Janice Huffman, and Valerie Copenhaver. Championship Quarterfinals.
In 2003, third year head coach Scott Bowen will lead his squad against a fierce lineup of nationally ranked opponents, including #3 Lindenwood, #5 Lindsey Wilson, #17 Missouri Baptist, and #22 College of St. Mary (Neb.). Next weekend, Park will square-off against Missouri Baptist and Lindsey Wilson within 24 hours in St. Louis, Mo. The Pirates travel to Graceland University on Labor Day before returning to Parkville for the home opener on Thursday, September 4, against rival William Jewell College.
The Pirates are returning four of their top five scorers from last season, including NAIA Honorable Mention All-American Pam Bedzrah who posted 24 goals and 10 assists to finish tenth in the nation in the individual statistical category for points per game, averaging 3.40. She is joined by senior Tunde Nemeth (12 goals, 8 assists), sophomore forward Kesiann Francis (8 goals, 3 assists), and Marilyn Boucher (7 goals, 3 assists) who combined for the bulk of Park’s offensive output in 2002.
Notably absent from the 2003 roster is Third Team All-American Jenni Visala, who, along with Honorable Mention All-American Jennifer Miller, anchored Park’s stingy defense last season. The team finished the season ranked fourth nationally in goals against, surrendering just 13 goals in 22 matches. Three players will vie for the keeper position on this year’s roster: Bridget Duhme, a returning junior who sat out last season with an injury; Nicole Debrabander, a sophomore from Parkville, Mo.; and Michelle Egler, a freshman from Valley, Neb. Lisa Flood, a junior from London, Ontario, will shore up the defense, along with freshman Amber Pecheco. Sophomore Kate Johnson, senior Janice Huffman, junior Valerie Copenhaver, and freshman Julia Eshikumo are expected to control the midfield.
“Early on, our focus involves introducing the new players to what it means to be a Park University women’s soccer player,” said Bowen. “Our first weeks of competition are tough. We intend to have fun, work hard, and stay focused on the next three months.”

2003 Men's Soccer Preview

MEN'S SOCCER FORECAST CALLS FOR PERFECT MIX OF RETURNERS, NEWCOMERS
PARKVILLE, MO--When the #3 Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders visit Julian Field for Park's home opener on August 30 at 7:00 p.m., a glow of optimism in the eyes of Pirate fans will illuminate campus more brightly than the four bays of stadium lights far above the turf.  Third year head coach Efrem Shimlis has brought in eightPark University seniors in 2003 (left to right): Minas Hailu, Derrick Green, Almir Lemes Jr., Magnus Gunnarsson, Tiago Sajben and Darnell Ross. student-athletes who will bolster his already-strong core of thirteen returners to make up the 2003 roster.  Under Shimlis' direction, the squad has their course for 2003 plainly mapped: work hard; play smart, technically sound soccer; have fun; and minimize distractions.   According to Shimlis, it's an approach that resonates through his team, both on and away from the pitch, corroborating the group of twenty-one young men who hail from eight different countries toward a shared goal of reaching the MCAC Conference playoffs and contending for a spot in the NAIA Region IV tournament.
Heading into the 2003 season, the Pirates are ranked 14th nationally and second in NAIA Region IV behind the Hastings College Broncos (Neb.).  Park was statistically magnificent in 2002, ranking third nationally in goals scored (98) and goals scored per game (3.9) behind perennial powers Auburn-Montgomery and Lindsey Wilson.  In the back, the Pirates finished ninth in goals against (9) and sixth in goals against average (.8).
Notably absent from the 2003 roster are goalkeeper Scott Woods who tallied 11 shutouts and returned a .79 goals against average at the end of last season.  Defender, NAIA All-American, and NSCAA Player of the Year, Eric Ongao, is gone too, having accepted a spot on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL A-League Northeast Division in the spring.  Woods and Ongao spirited Park's formidable defense last season; the versatility of several newcomers will determine whether this year's backfield will be as solid.  Freshman Chris Eslinger from Fort Osage High School and junior Ricardo Avalos, a transfer from Johnson County Community College, will compete for protecting the net.  Felix Makachia, Daniel Jiregna, Justin Boersma, Enock Odede, Derrick Green and Ryan Shaw will work together to control the remainder of the backfield.
On the attack, Park University enjoys the return of leading scorer Ross Stride who put up 13 goals and six assists as a freshman last season.  Teammate Henok Belayneh, a sophomore from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, was the third leading scorer for the Pirates, posting 12 goals and five assists.  Forwards Darnell Ross, Almir Lemes Jr., Henrique Pinto will also challenge for offensive chances.
In the midfield, returners Chris Lisaka, Magnus Gunnarsson, Mekete Gashaw, Minas Hailu and Tiago Sajben are joined by newcomer David Waithaka to stabilize the center of the field.  Lisaka scored nine goals and distributed nine assists for 27 points in 2002; a total shared by three-time Academic All-American forward Dave Foster, who graduated from Park in December 2002.
Looking ahead at the 2003 schedule, Shimlis shakes his head, noting that "there is no 'easy' stretch, not even an 'easy' game."
"We have to work for everything we get this year," said Shimlis. "Everyone is going to bring their best game against us, and we face five preseason nationally ranked opponents.  We want to give one-hundred percent toward enthusiasm, intensity and having fun."
