LONGUSKI NAMED DAKTRONICS-NAIA ALL-AMERICA
SCHOLAR-ATHLETE
OLATHE,
KAN. Junior Keith Longuski of the
Park University mens
cross country team was selected as a Daktronics-NAIA All-America
Scholar-Athlete over the weekend.
Longuski, a native of
Ubly, Mich.,
finished 46th at the NAIA National Cross Country Meet Saturday
in Louisville, Ky. He improved his finish by nearly 150 places from his
sophomore season, when he took 195th. Longuski is an Athletic
Training major.
Daktronics-NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes must have
a junior or senior academic standing and maintain a minimum cumulative grade
point average of 3.5.

LONGUSKI FINISHES 46TH AT NAIA NATIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIPS
LOUISVILLE, KY.
-- Junior Keith Longuski of the Park University men's cross country team
took 46th place at the NAIA National Championships Saturday in Louisville,
Ky.
Longuski, a native of Ubly, Mich, recorded a time of
26:00.90 on the 8K course. Longuski improved his finish this season
by nearly 150 places, after finishing 195th at the national meet as a
sophomore last year.

Cross Country Results
LONGUSKI EARNS BID TO NATIONALS WITH SECOND PLACE
FINISH AT REGION MEET
LINCOLN, NEB. --
Junior Keith Longuski of the Park University cross country team took
second place at the 2004 NAIA Region IV Championships Saturday afternoon
in Lincoln, Neb., to secure a bid to the NAIA National Championships in
two weeks.
Longuski, a native of Ubly, Mich., ran the 8K course in
a time of 25:51.21, which was just three seconds off the leader.
As a team, the men's squad took 13th, while the women
finished 12th.
Sophomore Becky Tackett (Marshfield, Mo.) paced the
women's squad with a 19th place finish.
Longuski will represent Park at the national meet
Saturday, Nov. 20, in Louisville, Ky.

Cross Country Results
LONGUSKI CAPTURES MCAC INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP
LAWRENCE, KAN.
-- Junior Keith Longuski (Ubly, Mich.) of the Park University men's cross
country team was crowned MCAC Most Valuable Performer Saturday by taking
first place at the MCAC Championship in Lawrence, Kan.
As a team, the men finished second, while the women's
squad took second as well.
On the men's side, freshman Chris Allred (Hollister,
Mo.) finished second to secure first-team all-conference honors.
Freshman Crispin Rea (Independence, Mo.) took 14th, which earned him
second-team all-conference laurels.
For the women, sophomore Becky Tackett (Marshfield,
Mo.) took third to become a first-team all-conference honoree, while
freshman Sara Pitia (Independence, Mo.) earned second-team honors.
Up next, the Pirates will compete at the NAIA Region IV
Championships in Lincoln, Neb., next Saturday starting at 10 a.m.

LONGUSKI TAKES SEVENTH AT NAIA MID-STATES CLASSIC
WINFIELD, KAN.
-- Junior Keith Longuski posted a seventh-place individual finish to pace
the Park University cross country teams at the Southwestern College/NAIA
Mid-States Classic Friday in Winfield, Kan.
A native of Ubly, Mich., Longuski finished the 8K
course in a time of 25:56, helping the men's team to a 12th-place finish.
Sophomore Becky Tackett (Marshfield, Mo.) led the
women's squad with a 17th-place showing, posting a time of 20:01.25 on the
5K course. The Pirate women finished 10th.
Park returns to action Saturday, Oct. 30, for the MCAC
Championships in Lawrence, Kan.

PARK CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS TAKE HASKELL INVITE
TITLES
LAWRENCE, KAN.
-- The Park University men's and women's cross country teams each captured
team titles at the Haskell Invitational Saturday morning in Lawrence, Kan.
The Pirate women had five runners finish in the top 10,
led by individual medallist Becky Tackett. A sophomore from
Marshfield, Mo., Tackett led the field with a time of 20:44.23.
Junior Reagan Mackey (Nassau, Bahamas) finished fourth with a time of
21:18.55. Rounding out Park's finishers in the top 10 were freshman
Sara Pitia (Fifth, 21:21.15), junior Amy Musil (Seventh, 21:33.26) and
junior Adhel Riak (Eighth, 21:37.06).
On the men's side, junior Keith Longuski (Ubly, Mich.)
took second with a time of 26:12.80. Park's only other top-10
finisher was freshman Chris Allred (Hollister, Mo.), who took fourth with
a time of 27:47.23.
The Pirate cross country teams return to competition
next Friday at the NAIA Midwest Championships in Winfield, Kan.

PIRATE WOMEN TAKE THIRD, MEN FINISH FIFTH AT
EMPORIA STATE INVITE
EMPORIA, KAN. --
Paced by a sixth-place individual finish by sophomore Becky Tackett, the
Park University women's cross country team took third at the Emporia State
Invitational Friday evening in Emporia, Kan.
Tackett, a native of Marshfield, Mo., ran the 5K course
in 19:41.
The Pirate men turned in a fifth-place showing, led by
junior Keith Longuski. A native of Ubly, Mich., Longuski took sixth
with a time of 25:36 in the 8K race.
Park returns to the course next Saturday, Oct. 9, in
Lawrence, Kan., for the Haskell Invitational.

Cross Country Results
PARK CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS TURN IN SOLID SHOWING AT
SOUTHERN STAMPEDE
JOPLIN, MO.
The Park University men's and women's cross country teams posted solid
showings at Missouri Southern State University's Southern Stampede
Saturday.
Junior Keith Longuski (Ubly, Mich.) turned in the men's
top finish in a time of 25:48, which was good for 31st place.
Freshmen Chris Allred (Hollister, Mo.) and Crispin Rea (Independence, Mo.)
each ran personal records Saturday. Allred took 95th in 27:23, while
Rea ran a time of 29:23 to place 186th.
A trio of women also turned in personal records at the
meet, led by sophomore Becky Tackett (Marshfield, Mo.). Tackett
finished 69th in 19:48. Freshman Jill Prather (Kansas City, Mo.) ran
the course in 21:13 for 143rd, while sophomore Jill Richardson (Kansas
City, Mo.) posted a time of 22:02 for 175th place.
The Park cross country teams return to action Friday,
Oct. 1, at the Emporia State Invitational.

PARK CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS TAKE SEVENTH AT BOB
TIMMONS INVITE
LAWRENCE, KAN.
The Park University men's and women's cross country teams each finished
in seventh place at the Bob Timmons Invitational hosted by the University
of Kansas Saturday morning.
Junior Keith Longuski (Ubly, Mich.) paced the men's
squad with a 17th-place finish in a time of 27:04.72. For the women,
sophomore Rebecca Tackett (Marshfield, Mo.) led the way with a 42nd-place
showing in a time of 21:50.39.
Up next, the Pirate men and women will compete at the
Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo., Saturday, Sept. 18.

Cross Country 2004 Season Preview
PARK CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS SET OUT TO DEFEND MCAC
TITLES
PARKVILLE, MO. The Park
University men's and women's cross country teams enter the 2004 seasons
ready to reload.
Gone are each team's top runners from a year ago.
Mabior Atem closed out an illustrious career in 2003 with his third
All-America honor on the men's side, while Crystal Bethel captured an
individual conference championship for the women.
Despite the losses, Head Coach Brian Renshaw has a
group of talented athletes ready lead the Pirates in 2004.
Junior Keith Longuski (Ubly, Mich.) will pace the men's
squad after placing second at the MCAC Championship and 10th at
the NAIA Region IV meet in 2003, which qualified him for nationals. In
addition, Renshaw expects solid performances from senior Roger White (Ft.
Collins, Colo.) and freshmen Chris Allred (Hollister, Mo.) and Justin Moss
(Festus, Mo.), who were all-state runners in Missouri last year as high
school seniors.
For the women, juniors Reagan Mackey (Nassau, Bahamas)
and Amy Musil (Kansas City, Mo.) return after posting first-team
all-conference finishes last season, while sophomore Becky Tackett
(Marshfield, Mo.) is back as a second-team all-conference honoree.
According to Renshaw, newcomers Melinda Jansen (Branson, Mo.), Sara Pitia
(Kansas City, Mo.) and Jill Prather (Kansas City, Mo.) are all expected to
contribute as freshmen.
Park opens its 2004 schedule next Saturday, Sept. 4, at
the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence, Kan.

TERRY, VAN DUINE REPEAT AS DAKTRONICS-NAIA
ALL-AMERICA SCHOLAR-ATHLETES, CHINCHILLA ALSO HONORED
OLATHE, KAN.
-- Seniors Sugglis Chinchilla, Michelle Terry and Terra Van Duine of the
Park University women's volleyball team were all named Daktronics-NAIA
All-America Scholar-Athletes over the weekend. Terry and Van Duine
earned the same honors as juniors last season.
Daktronics-NAIA
All-America Scholar-Athletes must have a junior or senior academic
standing and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5.
Chinchilla, a native of Merida, Venezuela, led the
Pirates with team-best 4.13 kills per game and ranked second on the team
with 3.63 digs per game. She is a Spanish major.
Terry (Independence, Mo.), an interior design major,
averaged 2.37 digs per game and had 31 service aces as a defensive
specialist.
A native of Blue Springs, Mo., Van Duine split time as
the team's libero and setter in 2004, averaging a team-best 3.77 digs
per game, along with 3.61 assists per game. She is an accounting
and business administration/finance major.
The Pirates finished the season with an overall record
of 25-13, which was Park's highest win total since 1997.

CHINCHILLA EARNS SECOND-TEAM ALL-REGION HONORS
PARKVILLE,
MO. Senior Sugglis Chinchilla of the
Park University womens
volleyball team was named to the NAIA All-Region IV Second Team over the
weekend in conjunction with the Region IV Tournament.
Chinchilla, a native of
Merida,
Venezuela,
led the Pirates to a 25-13 overall record in 2004, which was the
schools highest win total since 1997. Chinchilla averaged a team-best
4.13 kills per game, while posting a hitting percentage of .295.
Defensively, the outside hitter ranked second on the team with 3.63 digs
per game.
A First-Team All-MCAC selection, Chinchilla was twice
named MCAC Player of the Week in 2004 and also was named Region IV
Player of the Week Sept. 7.

PIRATE VOLLEYBALL TEAM EARNS MCAC HONORS
OMAHA, NEB.
Following one of the best seasons in school history, the Park University
women's volleyball team (25-13) earned numerous MCAC awards and honors
over the weekend.
Seniors Sugglis Chinchilla
(Merida, Venezuela) and Jilian
Creighton (Lansing, Kan.) each were named to the All-MCAC First Team,
while senior Tenysha Brown (Kansas City, Mo.) was a second-team
selection. Freshman setter Gabriela Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil)
was named MCAC Freshman of the Year.
Chinchilla led the Pirates offensive attack, averaging
4.13 kills per game while hitting at a .295 clip. Defensively, she
ranked second on the team in digs with 3.63 per game. Creighton,
who closed out the season as one of Park's top hitters, ranked second on
the team with 3.00 kills per game.
Brown led the Pirates with 1.11 blocks per game, to go
along with 2.76 kills per game. Carvalho turned in an outstanding
freshman campaign, averaging 11.56 assists and 3.03 digs per game.
In addition, Head Coach Peggy Tuter was honored as MCAC
Coach of the Year.
Tuter led the Pirates to a 25-13 record, which was the
school's highest win total since 1997. Park was ranked in the
region top 10 all season, but fell just short of a regional playoff
berth.

regular season with a 3-1 (30-21, 30-24, 22-30, 30-28) loss to
Benedictine College Thursday night in Atchison, Kan.
Senior Jilian Creighton (Lansing, Kan.) led the Pirates
offensively with 18 kills, while senior Sugglis Chinchilla (Merida,
Venezeula) added 13 kills. Freshman setter Gabriela Carvalho (Sao
Paulo, Brazil) recorded 44 assists.
Up next, Park will participate in the MCAC Tournament
next Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12-13. The site and game times have
yet to be determined.

CARVALHO HONORED AS MCAC SETTER OF THE WEEK
PARKVILLE, MO.
-- Freshman Gabriela Carvalho of the Park University women's volleyball
team (25-10, 11-4 MCAC) was named MCAC Setter of the Week Monday.
Carvalho, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, averaged 11.89
assists per game in helping the Pirates to a 2-1 record last week.
In Park's 3-0 win over College of the Ozarks on Saturday, she had 43
assists and 22 digs.
Park, which is ranked eighth in this week's Region IV
poll, travels to Omaha, Neb., tonight (Tuesday) to take on College of
St. Mary starting at 7 p.m.

volleyball action at the Breckon Sports Center.
Senior Tenysha Brown (Kansas City, Mo.) led the way
with 14 kills and a hitting percentage of .750. Freshman Anna
Pfeifer (Kansas City, Mo.) added 11 kills.
For the match, the Pirates hit .416 as a team.
Park will close out its home schedule Saturday when it

15-11) Tuesday night in Auburn, Neb.
Senior Sugglis Chinchilla (Merida, Venezuela) led Park
with 19 kills and seven digs. Senior Tenysha Brown (Kansas City,
Mo.) added 10 kills, seven block assists and three solo blocks.
The Pirates will look to get back on track Friday when
they host Oklahoma Wesleyan University at the Breckon Sports Center
starting at 7 p.m.

Freshman Anna Pfeifer (Kansas City, Mo.) led a balanced
offensive attack for the Pirates with 12 kills. Senior Sugglis
Chinchilla (Merida, Venezuela) added 10 kills, while senior Jilian
Creighton (Lansing, Kan.) had nine.

PARK PICKS UP TWO MORE WINS AT UNIVERSITY OF

LEAVENWORTH, KAN.
The Park University women's volleyball team moved to 21-9 on the season
with a pair of wins Saturday at the University of St. Mary Invitational
in Leavenworth, Kan.
The Pirates defeated William Jewell College 30-12,
30-20, 23-30, 30-24 in the day's opening match. Senior Sugglis
Chinchilla (Merida, Venezuela) led the way with 19 kills and 14 digs,
while freshman Gabriela Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil) recorded 47
assists.
Park swept Avila University 30-23, 30-15, 30-26 to
close out the invite. Seniors Jilian Creighton (Lansing, Kan.) and
Tenysha Brown (Kansas City, Mo.) each had 13 kills in the win.
The Pirates return to the floor on Tuesday in Wichita,
Kan., for an MCAC match against Newman University.

The Park University women's volleyball team (19-9, 7-3 MCAC) went 1-1 on
the first day of the University of St. Mary Invitational Friday in
Leavenworth, Kan.
Park picked up a 30-21, 30-22, 26-30, 30-26 win over Lindenwood
University in its first match of the day. Senior Sugglis Chinchilla (Merida,
Venezuela) had 15 kills, while senior Jilian Creighton (Lansing, Kan.)
recorded 13 kills to lead the Pirates. Freshman Gabriela Carvalho (Sao
Paulo, Brazil) had 45 assists.
In Park's second match, the Pirates fell 30-28, 30-27, 18-30, 30-23
to Hastings College. Creighton and senior Tenysha Brown (Kansas City,
Mo.) each had 14 kills in the loss.

PARKVILLE, MO. -- Senior Sugglis
Chinchilla of the Park University women's volleyball team was named MCAC
Player of the Week Monday night for the week ending Oct. 10.
Chinchilla (Merida, Venezuela) averaged 4.82 kills and
4.47 digs per game last week, helping Park to a 4-1 record for the week
and pushing the Pirates' record to 17-8 on the season.
Park hosts Haskell University Wednesday night at the
Breckon Sports Center starting at 7 p.m.

PIRATES SPLIT FINAL TWO MATCHES OF MCAC CLASSIC
LAWRENCE, KAN. -- The Park University women's
volleyball team (17-8, 6-3 MCAC) went 1-1 on the second day of the MCAC
Midseason Classic Saturday in Lawrence, Kan.
In the morning match, the Pirates won their sixth match
in a row with a 30-24, 30-28, 18-30, 30-25 win over the College of the
Ozarks. Senior Sugglis Chinchilla (Merida, Venezuela) led Park
with 16 kills and 19 digs. Freshman Anna Pfeifer (Kansas City,
Mo.) added 13 kills, while senior Nicci Ward (Blue Springs, Mo.) had 16
digs.
The Pirates faltered in their second match of the day,
falling to Newman University 30-25, 30-26 and 31-29. Chinchilla
had 17 kills and 18 digs, while freshman Gabriela Carvalho (Sao Paulo,
Brazil) recorded 38 assists and 16 digs.

Women's Volleyball Results
PARK VOLLEYBALL CONTINUES WINNING WAYS AT MCAC
CLASSIC
LAWRENCE, KAN. -- The Park University women's
volleyball team (16-7, 6-2 MCAC) continued its winning ways by defeating
Bellevue University and Central Christian College at the MCAC Classic
Friday night in Lawrence, Kan. The Pirates have now won five
matches in a row and seven of their last eight.
Park opened the evening with a 30-22, 30-27, 24-30,
30-27 win over Bellevue, which entered the mid-season tournament as the
conference leader at 7-0 and 15-5 overall. Senior Sugglis
Chinchilla (Merida, Venezuela) led the Pirates with 22 kills and 15
digs. Senior Terra Van Duine (Blue Springs, Mo.) added 23 digs.
Park defeated Central Christian College 30-15, 30-13,
30-21 in the Pirates' second match of the night. Chinchilla had 13

PIRATES CRUISE PAST PERU STATE, 3-0
PARKVILLE, MO. -- The Park University women's
volleyball team improved to 14-7 on the season with a 30-21, 30-25,
30-19 sweep of Peru State College Tuesday night at the Breckon Sports
Center.
Senior Sugglis Chinchilla (Merida, Venezuela) led Park
with 14 kills and 15 digs. Senior Tenysha Brown (Kansas City, Mo.)
added nine kills and a pair of blocks. Defensively, seniors
Jessica Silliman (Bernie, Mo.) and Nicci Ward (Kansas City, Mo.) had 12
and 11 digs, respectively.

PARKVILLE, MO. -- Junior Whitney Abramson of
the Park University women's volleyball team (13-7) was named MCAC Setter
of the Week Monday night.
Abramson, a native of Blue Springs, Mo., had an
outstanding match on Tuesday at Oklahoma Wesleyan, serving up 10 aces
and recording 42 assists. Against William Jewell on Friday,
Abramson dug nine balls and had a pair of service aces.
The Pirates, who have won four of their last five
matches, host Peru State College tonight at the Breckon Sports Center

PARKVILLE, MO. -- Senior Sugglis Chinchilla had
22 kills and 15 digs to lead the Park University women's volleyball team
(13-7) to a 30-25, 26-30, 30-26, 30-25 victory over William Jewell
College Friday night at the Breckon Sports Center.
Chinchilla, a native of Merida, Venezuela, hit .226 on
the evening. Freshman Gabriela Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had a
successful debut for the Pirates, recording 52 assists and 12 digs in
her first start at Park.
Senior Tenysha Brown (Kansas City, Mo.) had 12 kills
and six total blocks in the win, while senior Jilian Creighton (Lansing,

PARK VOLLEYBALL RANKED NINTH IN REGION IV POLL
PARKVILLE, MO. -- The Park
University women's volleyball team (11-7, 1-2 MCAC) has moved into the
No. 9 position in this week's NAIA Region IV Top 10 rankings released
Monday.
The Pirates went 3-2 last week with wins over Central
Methodist College, Graceland University and Franciscan University.
Park has been led all season by senior outside hitter
Sugglis Chinchilla. Chinchilla, a native of Merida, Venezuela, is
averaging 4.2 kills and 4.0 digs per game.
The Pirates will head to Bartlesville, Okla., Tuesday
for a conference match against Oklahoma Wesleyan University at 7 p.m.

City, Iowa. The Pirates split their first two matches of the
invite on Friday.
Park took a 3-0 (32-30, 30-20, 32-30) loss to Si Tanka
(S.D.) in Saturday's opener. Senior Sugglis Chinchilla (Merida,
Venezuela) had 14 kills, while freshman Anna Pfeifer (Kansas City, Mo.)
added 10 kills.
In the second match of the day, host Briar Cliff handed
the Pirates a 3-1 (30-20, 23-30, 30-25, 30-21) loss. Chinchilla

HONORS
PARKVILLE,
MO. Seniors Sugglis Chinchilla and Terra Van Duine of the Park
University women's volleyball team earned MCAC and NAIA Region IV honors
Tuesday.
After leading the Pirates to a perfect 5-0 start last
week, Chinchilla was named MCAC and NAIA Region IV Player of the Week,
while Van Duine was honored as MCAC and NAIA Region IV Setter of the
Week.
The 5-0 start also moved Park into ninth place in the
first Region IV Rankings released Tuesday.
Chinchilla, a native of Merida, Venezuela, averaged
4.75 kills per game last week, hitting at a .406 clip. She also
averaged 4.06 digs and 0.88 service aces per game.
A native of Blue Springs, Mo., Van Duine averaged 10.77
assists, 4.15 digs and 0.77 service aces per game.
The Pirates will put
their undefeated record on the line Wednesday night when they visit
Avila University at 7 p.m.

recorded three wins on the final day of the McPherson College
Invitational Saturday, pushing the Pirates to 5-0 on the season.
Park opened the day with a 30-18, 30-12, 30-10 sweep of
South Dakota Tech. Senior Sugglis Chinchilla (Merida, Venezuela)
led the way with 12 kills, while senior Tenysha Brown (Kansas City, Mo.)
added 10 kills.
The Pirates then notched a 30-16, 30-9, 30-21 win over
Bacone, highlighted by 10-kill performances by both Chinchilla and

Park swept its way to victory again with a 30-20,
30-16, 30-20 win over Bethany College to close out the invite.
Chinchilla and Creighton again paced the Pirates, recording 13 kills

Women's Volleyball 2004 Season Preview
BROWN, CHINCHILLA READY TO PACE PARK WOMEN'S
VOLLEYBALL IN 2004
PARKVILLE, MO.--Coming off a 14-21
record and a sixth-place finish in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic
Conference last season, the Park University women's volleyball team
returns an experienced group of six starters and nine letterwinners in
2004.
Leading the Pirates will be senior middle hitter
Tenysha Brown, who earned first-team All-MCAC honors last season. Brown
led the team in 2003 with 1.5 blocks per game, to go along with her 2.9
kills per game. The Kansas City, Mo., native hit at a .352 clip last
season.
Senior Sugglis Chinchilla returns at outside hitter
after being named second-team All-MCAC a year ago. The Merida,
Venezuela, native averaged a team-best 3.3 kills per game, as well as
2.6 digs and 0.6 blocks per game in 2003.
Rounding out Park's returning starters are senior
outside hitter Jessica Sillman (Bernie, Mo.), senior setter Terra Van
Duine (Blue Springs, Mo.), senior outside hitter Jilian Creighton
(Lansing, Kan.) and senior defensive specialist Nicci Ward. Sillman led
the team last season in digs (2.8 per game) and service aces (43), while
Van Duine will make the transition this season from libero to setter.
Creighton ranked third on the team in kills (2.4 kpg) in 2003 and Ward
was second on the squad in service aces (29).
Other returning letterwinners include juniors Michelle
Terry (Defensive Specialist, Independence, Mo.), Francesca Chavez
(Defensive Specialist, Quemado, N.M.) and Meghaan Fountain (Middle
Hitter, Gladstone, Mo.).
Head Coach Peggy Tuter, who is entering her fifth
season at Park (48-90 record), has been encouraged by a strong preseason
by her Pirates.
"The team has been working very hard to get ready for
the season," Tuter said. "Last year, we had trouble finishing matches,
but this year our team will make sure that won't be the case."
The Pirates open their 2004 season on Thursday, Sept.
2, when they host Graceland University at the Breckon Sports Center
starting at 7 p.m.

OLATHE, KAN. -- Freshman Maria Ruiz of the Park
University women's soccer team has earned NAIA Honorable Mention
All-American honors.
Ruiz, a native of Madrid, Spain, led the Pirates with a
team-high 33 goals and 12 assists in 2004. She netted three goals or more in
a game on six occasions, including a season-high five goals against Oklahoma
Wesleyan University on Oct. 14.
Park finished the season with a 13-7 record and
advanced to the first round of the NAIA National Championship Tournament.

Freshman Maria Ruiz of the Park University women's soccer team has been
named to the NAIA All-Region IV First Team, while three other Pirates were
honored as second-team picks.
Junior Kesiann Francis (Chaguanas, Trinidad), junior
Akeela Woods (Toco, Trinidad) and freshman Sophie Chapman (London, England)
were all named second-team all-region.
Ruiz, a native of Madrid, Spain, scored 33 goals and
had 12 assists in her first season with the Pirates. She scored three
goals or more in a game six times, including a season-high five goals
against Oklahoma Wesleyan University on Oct. 14.
Francis, a midfielder, ranked third on the team with 10
goals and eight assists. Woods, a starter in all 20 games at defender,
recorded two assists for Park. Chapman was fourth on the team with
eight goals, along with a pair of assists as a midfielder.
The Pirates finished the year 13-7 record and used a
10-game winning streak to advance to first round of the NAIA National
Championship Tournament.

THREE PIRATES HONORS AS DAKTRONICS-NAIA ALL-AMERICA
SCHOLAR-ATHLETES
OLATHE,
KAN. Three members of the
Park University womens
soccer team were named Daktronics-NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes,
according to an announcement by the NAIA Monday.
Senior Haley Daniel (Independence,
Mo.), junior Kesiann Francis (Chaguanas,
Trinidad) and junior Kate
Johnson (Kansas City, Mo.) were honored for their success in the classroom.
Recipients of the award have a junior or senior
academic standing and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of
3.5.
Daniel, an Athletic Training major, started all 20
games this season for the Pirates as a defender, scoring a goal and
recording two assists. Francis, a Computer Science major, ranked third on
the team in scoring with 10 goals and eight assists as a midfielder in
2004. Johnson, a midfielder, scored three goals, had two assists and
started 18 games this season and is a Psychology major.
After opening the year 2-5, Park rebounded to win 12 of
its final 14 games and qualify for the NAIA National Championship Tournament
in Santa Barbara, Calif. The Pirates finished the season with a 13-7
record.

PARK'S SEASON COMES TO AN END WITH 2-1 LOSS TO
BETHEL IN FIRST ROUND OF NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- The Park University women's
soccer team (13-7) had its season come to an end with a 2-1 loss to Bethel
(Tenn.) College in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament Wednesday
in Santa Barbara, Calif.
The 19th-seeded Pirates, who had won 10 games in a row
heading into nationals, fell behind early when Bethel's Sarah Muszalski
scored at 10:29 on an assist from Lean O'Grady. Bethel out-shot Park
13-1 in the first half.
In the second half, Muszalski gave Bethel a 2-0 lead
with a goal at 73:40, which was assisted by Alicia James and Christina Colla.
Park sophomore Julia Eshikumo (Nairobi, Kenya) scored
at 87:10 on an assist by freshman Maria Roman (Madrid, Spain), but it wasn't
enough as Bethel advanced to Thursday's second round.
Freshman goalkeeper Jade Holcomb (Fayetteville, Ark.)
had seven saves for Park.
For the game, Bethel out-shot the Pirates, 18-5.

PARK TO FACE BETHEL COLLEGE (TENN.) IN FIRST ROUND
OF NAIA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

soccer team (13-6) will play Bethel College (Tenn.) in the first round of
the NAIA National Championship next Wednesday, Nov. 17, in Santa Barbara,
Calif. Game time is set for 2:15 p.m. (PST).
In the pairings released Friday, Park is seeded 19th in
the 20-team field. Bethel, which has posted a 18-4-0 record this
season, is seeded 14th.
The winner of the Park/Bethel contest will advance to
Thursday's second-round game against third-seeded Azusa Pacific University

PIRATES CAPTURE REGION IV TITLE, ADVANCE TO
NATIONALS WITH 5-0 WIN OVER DORDT
SIOUX CENTER, IOWA -- The Park University women's
soccer team's (13-6) magical run continued Wednesday with a 5-0 victory over
Dordt College to win the NAIA Region IV Championship and secure a bid to
next week's NAIA National Tournament in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Freshman Maria Ruiz (Madrid, Spain) again paced the Pirates,
scoring four goals en route to being named the tournament's MVP. Ruiz,
a native of Madrid, Spain, scored a total of eight goals in the three-game
tournament and has 33 goals on the season.
Ruiz opened the scoring in the 13th minute on an assist
from freshman Laura Baeza (Madrid, Spain) and added her second goal of the
game in the 18th minute to give Park a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Julia Eshikumo (Nairobi, Kenya) scored the
Pirates' third goal in the 38th minute on an assist by Ruiz, who tacked on
Park's fourth goal of the first half in the 40th minute on an assist by
Eshikumo.
Ruiz closed out Park's scoring in the 63rd minute on an
unassisted goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Jade Holcomb (Fayetteville, Ark.)
recorded her third shutout of the season, grabbing three saves.
Following the victory, Interim Head Coach Wes Wade was
named NAIA Region IV Coach of the Year.
The Pirates, who have now won 10 games in a row, will
now await pairings for the national tournament, which begins next Wednesday,
Nov. 17, in Santa Barbara, Calif. The 20-team, single-elimination

NAIA Region IV Finals with a 3-1 semifinal win over Ottawa University
Tuesday afternoon in Sioux Center, Iowa.
Ottawa took an early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute on a
goal by Kayla Ireland off a direct kick. Ruiz (Madrid, Spain) evened
the game up at 1-1 in the 25th minute on an assist from junior Akeela Woods
(Toco, Trinidad).
After the two teams took the 1-1 tie into the half,
Ruiz scored the game-winner in the 55th minute and then added an insurance
goal in the 71st minute to wrap up the victory. Ruiz leads Park with
29 goals on the year.
Freshman goalkeeper Jade Holcomb (Fayetteville, Ark.)
had eight saves for Park.
The eighth-seeded Pirates have won nine games in a row
and are now just one win away from qualifying for the NAIA National
Tournament next week in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Park will play No. 2 seed Dordt College in the regional final Wednesday at
1 p.m. in Sioux Center Iowa.

PIRATES ADVANCE TO REGIONAL SEMIFINALS WITH 2-0 WIN
AT HASTINGS
HASTINGS, NEB. -- The Park University women's soccer
team (11-6) continued its winning ways with a 2-0 victory over top-seeded
Hastings College Saturday night in the first round of the NAIA Region IV
Playoffs.
The Pirates, who entered the tournament seeded eighth,
have now won eight games in a row.
Sophomore Julia Eshikumo (Nairobi, Kenya) gave Park a
1-0 lead in the 20th minute on an assist from freshman Maria Ruiz (Madrid,
Spain). Ruiz added an insurance goal for the Pirates in the 79th
minute on an assist from freshman Laura Baeza (Madrid, Spain).
Park will now meet up with fourth-seeded Ottawa
University
Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Sioux Center, Iowa, in the regional semifinals. The region
final is set for Wednesday in Sioux Center, Iowa.

PARK TO PLAY AT HASTINGS SATURDAY IN FIRST ROUND OF
REGIONALS
PARKVILLE, MO. -- The Park University women's soccer
team (10-6) has been selected as the No. 8 seed in the NAIA Region IV
Playoffs and will travel to top-seeded Hastings College Saturday for a
first-round match starting at 7 p.m.
The Pirates, who have won seven games in a row, won the
MCAC Conference Tournament last week to earn an automatic berth in the
regional tournament.
Saturday's winner between Park and Hastings will face
the winner of No. 4 Ottawa University/No. 5 Dana College in Tuesday's
semifinals, with the finals being played Wednesday. The highest
remaining seed after Saturday's first round will host the semifinals and
finals.

RUIZ NAMED MCAC CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR;
THREE OTHER PIRATES HONORED
PARKVILLE, MO. -- Freshman Maria Ruiz of the Park
University women's soccer team (10-6) was named MCAC Co-Offensive Player of
the Year Monday, according to an announcement by the conference office.
Ruiz (Madrid, Spain) led the Pirates with 25 goals this
season, to go along with nine assists for a team-high 59 total points, which
also placed her on the All-MCAC First Team.
Also earning first-team all-conference honors was
freshman midfielder Sophie Chapman. A native of London, England,
Chapman scored eight goals and had two assists.
Junior midfielder Kesiann Francis (Chaguanas, Trinidad)
and sophomore forward Julia Eshikumo (Nairobi, Kenya) were Second-Team All-MCAC
selections. Francis was third on the team with 10 goals and seven
assists. Eshikumo scored 11 goals and recorded a team-high 11 assists.
Park, which closed out the regular season by winning
seven games in a row and nine of its last 10, moved up to third in the final
NAIA Region IV Rankings released Monday.
Pairings, sites and game times for Saturday's first
round of regional competition will be announced Wednesday.

PIRATES CAPTURE MCAC CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 3-1 VICTORY
OVER COLLEGE OF ST. MARY
OMAHA, NEB. -- The Park University women's soccer team
(10-6) claimed the MCAC Tournament Championship with a 3-1 victory over
top-seeded College of St. Mary Saturday afternoon in Omaha, Neb.
The Pirates, who have won seven games in a row and nine
of their last 10, opened the scoring in the seventh minute on a goal by
freshman Julia Eshikumo (Nairobi, Kenya). Park increased its lead to
2-0 in the 24th minute when junior Kat Hogan (Prairie Village, Kan.) scored
her third goal of the season.
In the second half, College of St. Mary pulled to
within one in the 59th minute on a score by Katie Korth, but Park freshman
Maria Ruiz (Madrid, Spain) pushed the Pirate lead back to two with her 25th
goal of the season in the 76th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Jade Holcomb (Fayetteville, Ark.)
had seven saves for Park.
With the win, the Pirates earned an automatic berth in
the Region IV tournament, which begins next Saturday, Nov. 6. Sites
and game times will be announced Wednesday.

(9-6) advanced to MCAC Tournament Final Friday with a 2-1 victory over
Newman University in Omaha, Neb.
Freshman Maria Ruiz (Madrid, Spain) put the Pirates on
the board first with a goal in the 20th minute. Ruiz now has 24 goals
on the year.
After Park took a 1-0 lead into the half, Newman evened
the game up at 1-1 on a goal by Ashley Ellsworth in the 61st minute.
Sophomore Julia Eshikumo (Nairobi, Kenya) scored the
game-winner just three minutes later to send the Pirates to the conference
final.
Second-seeded Park will play top-seeded College of St.
Mary Saturday at 1 p.m. for the conference championship.

Ruiz, a native of Madrid, Spain, scored a total of
seven goals and had three assists last week helping the Pirates to wins over
York College and Oklahoma Wesleyan University. Ruiz, who has been
named MCAC Player of the Week three times this season, leads Park with 20
goals on the year.
The Pirates return to the pitch Saturday in Baldwin
City, Kan., for the regular season finale against Baker University starting
at 1 p.m.

OKLAHOMA WESLEYAN
PARKVILLE, MO. -- The Park University women's soccer
team (7-6, 4-1 MCAC) cruised to an 18-1 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan Thursday
afternoon at Julian Field. With a 12-0 win over York College on
Tuesday, the Pirates have outscored their last two opponents 30-1.
Freshman Maria Ruiz (Madrid, Spain) paced Park with
five goals and an assist against Oklahoma Wesleyan. Ruiz leads the
Pirates with 20 goals this season.
Junior Kesiann Francis (Chaguanas, Trinidad) notched
her second consecutive hat trick, scoring three goals along with recording
three assists. Francis ranks second on the team in goals with nine.
Junior Kate Johnson (Kansas City, Mo.), freshman Laura
Baeza (Madrid, Spain), freshman Sophie Chapman (London, England) and
freshman Kristen Steiner (Florissant, Mo.) each scored two goals, while
junior Kat Hogan (Prairie Village, Kan.) and sophomore Julia Eshikumo
(Nairobi, Kenya) added one goal a piece.
Oklahoma Wesleyan's lone goal came on a penalty kick by
Kathryn McIntyre in the 59th minute. Park out-shot the Eagles, 45-1.

MORNINGSIDE
PARKVILLE, MO. -- The Park University women's soccer
team (5-6, 3-1 MCAC) picked up a 5-1 victory over Morningside College Friday
night at Julian Field.
Freshman Maria Ruiz (Madrid, Spain) got the Pirates
off to a quick start, scoring a pair of goals in the first 14 minutes of the
game to give Park a 2-0 lead. Ruiz leads the Pirates with 13 goals
this season.
Junior Kate Johnson (Kansas City, Mo.) gave Park a 3-0
lead in the 50th minute on an assist from junior Kesiann Francis (Chaguanas,
Trinidad). Francis then scored a goal of her own in the 55th minute on
an assist from Roman. Freshman Sophie Chapman (London, England) lifted
Park's lead to 5-0 with a goal in the 56th minute off an assist from
Francis.
Morningside scored in the 80th minute on a goal by
Marisha Lenz.
The Pirates out-shot Morningside, 27-10.

RUIZ LIFTS PARK TO 3-1 WIN AT NEWMAN
WICHITA, KAN. -- Freshman Maria Ruiz scored three
goals to lead the Park University women's soccer team (4-6, 3-1 MCAC) to a
3-1 victory over Newman University Tuesday night in Wichita, Kan.
Ruiz, a native of Madrid, Spain, opened the scoring in
the fourth minute on an unassisted goal. Newman answered in the eighth
minute on a goal by Linda Hoffman to tie the game up at 1-1.
In the second half, Ruiz gave the Pirates the lead for
good in the 72nd minute on an assist from sophomore Julia Eshikumo (Nairobi,
Kenya). Ruiz then completed her hat trick in the 89th minute, which
was assisted by freshman Laura Baeza (Madrid, Spain).
Ruiz leads Park with 11 goals on the season.

RUIZ LIFTS PARK TO 3-2 VICTORY OVER CENTRAL
CHRISTIAN IN SECOND OVERTIME
McPHERSON, KAN. The Park University women's soccer
team (2-5, 1-1) trailed 2-0 with less than six minutes remaining in the
game, but found a way to record a 3-2 victory over Central Christian College
in double overtime Wednesday afternoon in McPherson, Kan.
The Pirates began their comeback in the 85th minute on
freshman Maria Ruiz' (Madrid, Spain) first goal of the game. Junior
Kat Hogan (Prairie Village, Kan.) scored the equalizer in the 89th minute to
send the match to extra time. After a scoreless first overtime period,
Ruiz lifted Park to its second victory of the season with a goal in the
106th minute.
Central Christian got off to a quick start, as Annie
Sherman scored just 3:18 into the game. Sherman then gave
Central Christian a 2-0 lead on a goal in the 32nd minute.
Up next, the Pirates will travel to Bellevue, Neb., to
take on Bellevue University on Sunday at 2 p.m.

PARK FALLS 3-0 AT BENEDICTINE THURSDAY
ATCHISON, KAN. The Park University women's soccer
team fell to 1-4 on the season with a 3-0 loss at Benedictine College
Thursday night in Atchison, Kan.
Benedictine's Maura Mader opened the scoring in the
39th minute to give the Raven's a 1-0 lead. Tricia Hutchinson scored
less than a minute later to give Benedictine a 2-0 advantage.
Hutchinson added her second goal of the game in the 71st minute.

WES WADE NAMED INTERIM HEAD WOMEN'S SOCCER COACH AT
PARK UNIVERSITY
PARKVILLE, MO. Park University Director of Athletics
Claude English announced Monday that Wes Wade has been named Interim Head
Womens Soccer Coach.
Wade comes to Park following an illustrious
professional playing career, including 12 seasons with the Kansas City
Attack/Comets of the Major Indoor Soccer League. Wade finished his career
in Kansas City as the franchises all-time leader in goals, assists and
games played.
Im happy to be a part of the Park University family,
Wade said. Im looking forward to keeping the womens soccer program among
the elite teams in the NAIA.
In all, Wade played 16 seasons professionally, playing
on five championship teams and earning seven all-star game appearances.
Wes will be a welcome addition to our staff and an
asset to the womens soccer program, English said. I look forward to
working with him.
A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Wades coaching
experience includes serving as a head coach for the Extreme Faith Soccer
Club in Kansas City since 1999, an assistant coaching position at James
Madison High School in San Diego in 1990 and 1991, as well as working
numerous camps across the country during his 16-year playing career.
Wade assumes his duties at Park effective immediately,
replacing former Head Coach Scott Bowen, who resigned last week. A national
search will be conducted to fill the position on a full-time basis.

PIRATES HOLD ON FOR 3-2 VICTORY OVER LINDENWOOD
PARKVILLE, MO. The Park University women's
soccer team (1-3) tallied a 3-2 victory over Lindenwood University Saturday
afternoon at Julian Field.
Freshman Laura Baeza (Madrid, Spain) put the Pirates on
the board first with her first goal of the season at 4:09. Park took a
2-0 lead on freshman Maria Ruiz' (Madrid, Spain) goal at 33:39, which was
assisted by junior Kesiann Francis (Chaguanas, Trinidad).
Lindenwood began to creep back into the game in the
68th minute on a goal by Ashley Stein.
Sophomore Julia Eshikumo (Nairobi, Kenya) gave the
Pirates a much needed insurance goal in the 70th minute on an assist from
Ruiz. Lindenwood's Becky Ryan scored in the 87th minute to put the
score to 3-2, but Park held on for its first victory of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Jade Holcomb (Fayetteville, Ark.)
turned in a solid performance in goal, recording 10 saves. Lindenwood
out-shot the Pirates 27-13.
Park returns to action Thursday when it travels to
Atchison, Kan., to take on Benedictine College at 5 p.m.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON

soccer team (0-3) fell 3-1 to Doane College Saturday
afternoon at Julian Field.
The Pirates jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute

PIRATES DROP SEASON OPENER TO JOHN BROWN 2-1 IN
DOUBLE OT
PARKVILLE, MO. The Park University women's
soccer team (0-1) dropped a 2-1 decision in double overtime to John Brown
University Saturday afternoon at Julian Field.
John Brown's Casey Anderson scored the game-winner in
the 110th minute to push the Golden Eagles' record to 2-0 on the season.
Anderson's goal followed JBU's 17th corner kick of the afternoon, while the
Pirates were held to just one.
John Brown opened the scoring in the seventh minute
when freshman Ondell Williams scored to give the Golden Eagles an early 1-0
lead.
Park answered in the 79th minute as freshman Angie
Gardner (Blue Springs, Mo.) took a cross from junior Kate Johnson (Kansas
City, Mo.) and put it in the net to tie the game at 1-1.

Women's Soccer 2004 Season Preview
ESHIKUMO READY TO LEAD YOUNG PARK WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM
IN 2004
PARKVILLE, MO. Despite losing seven
starters from the 2003 MCAC and NAIA Region IV championship team, the Park
University women's soccer team will look to carry over last season's success
into 2004.
The Pirates' top goal-scorer from a year ago, Julia
Eshikumo, returns to lead a Park squad that finished the season 15-5-1 and
advanced to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament. Eshikumo, a
sophomore from Nairobi, Kenya, scored 26 goals and had eight assists en
route to being named a first-team all-region selection.
Junior Kesiann Francis (Chauganas, Trinidad) was a
second-team All-MCAC pick in 2003, scoring three goals and notching eight
assists in 20 starts as a midfielder.
Defensively, sophomore Amber Pecheco (Kansas City, Mo.)
is back after starting 20 games last season as a freshman. Junior Kate
Johnson (Kansas City, Mo.) started six games as a midfielder in 2003,
recording nine shots and one assist.
With just five returnees and 10 newcomers on the
roster, Head Coach Scott Bowen remains optimistic about the upcoming season.
"My returnees have done a good job in showing the new
players what kind of work ethic is necessary to make it to the top," said
Bowen, who enters his fourth season at Park with a record of 48-12-2. "As
the season goes, we will definitely see our share of success."
For the first time since 2000, Park was left out of the
NAIA Top 25 Preseason Poll, but Bowen and the Pirates plan to use the
exclusion as a motivator.
"Our team knows they have
something to prove," Bowen said.
Park opens its 2004 campaign Saturday when it hosts
John Brown University at Julian Field starting at 2 p.m.

MULAMA NAMED SECOND-TEAM ALL-AMERICAN
OLATHE,
KAN. Junior Simon Mulama of the Park University men's
soccer team has been named an NAIA Second-Team All-American. In
addition, senior Justin Boersma (Kelowna, B.C.), senior Chris Lisaka
(Nairobi, Kenya) and freshman Saidi Isaac (Nairobi, Kenya) all were named
Honorable Mention All-Americans.
Mulama, a midfielder, scored three goals and had six
assists in 2004. He was also a First-Team All-Region IV and a
Second-Team All-MCAC selection.
A defender, Boersma recorded two assists for the
Pirates in 2004. A Third-Team All-American in 2003, he was also a
First-Team All-Region IV and First-Team All-MCAC pick.
Lisaka ranked third on the team with 10 goals and seven
assists as a midfielder for the Pirates. He also was an all-region
and all-conference honoree.
Isaac turned in one of the top offensive seasons in
school history, scoring 36 goals in his first season at Park. Isaac
was also honored earlier in the year as the MCAC and Region IV Player of
the Year.
As a team, Park finished the season 20-3-1 and advanced
to the second round of the NAIA National Championship Tournament.

BOERSMA BECOMES TWO-TIME DAKTRONICS-NAIA
ALL-AMERICA SCHOLAR-ATHLETE
OLATHE,
KAN. Senior Justin Boersma of the
Park University mens
soccer team was named a Daktronics-NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete for
the second time in his career Monday.
Boersma, a native of
Kelowna,
British Columbia,
earned the same honor as a junior last season. He is an Elementary
Education major. Recipients of the award must have a junior or senior
academic standing and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of
3.5.
Athletically, Boersma keyed Parks defense this season,
starting 20 games and recording two assists. In addition, he was named to
both the All-MCAC First Team and All-Region IV First Team earlier in the
season.
Park finished the year with a 20-3-1 overall record and
advanced to the second round of the NAIA National Championship.

PARK'S SEASON COMES TO AN END WITH 5-2 LOSS TO
AUBURN MONTGOMERY IN SECOND ROUND OF NATIONAL TOURNEY
OLATHE, KAN. -- The
Park University men's soccer team (20-3-1) had its season come to an end
Thursday with a 5-2 setback to fourth-seeded Auburn University Montgomery
in the second round of the NAIA National Championship at the College
Boulevard Activities Center in Olathe, Kan.
Park fell behind early when AUM's Hjortur Hjartarsson
scored in the 16th minute and then added his second goal of the game in
the 34th minute to put the Pirates down, 2-0.
Senior Chris Lisaka (Nairboi, Kenya) scored just five
minutes later on a corner kick in the 39th minute to put the score at 2-1
heading into the half.
Auburn Montgomery though scored goals at 61:43, 70:37
and 76:13 to take a control of the game with a 5-1 lead. Park
freshman Saidi Isaac (Nairobi, Kenya) scored unassisted in the 82nd minute
to put the final score to 5-2. Isaac finished his first season with
the Pirates with 36 goals on the year.
Park out-shot Auburn Montgomery, 17-15.
The Pirates finished their season with an overall
record of 20-3-1.

PIRATES OPEN NATIONALS WITH 6-1 WIN OVER SI TANKA,
FACE NO. 4 SEED AUBURN UNIVERSITY MONTGOMERY THURSDAY
OLATHE, KAN. -- The
Park University men's soccer team (20-2-1) advanced to the second round of
the NAIA National Championships with a 6-1 victory over Si Tanka
University Wednesday at the College Boulevard Activities Center in Olathe,
Kan.
Freshman Saidi Isaac (Nairobi, Kenya) scored three
goals to lead the Pirate attack, pushing his season goal total to 35.
Sophomore Paul McLaughlin (Ballymoney, North Ireland)
scored the only goal of the first half at 9:10 to give the Pirates a 1-0
lead.
In the second half, Isaac scored at 53:01 on an assist
from senior Mekete Gashaw (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia), before McLaughlin
scored his second of the game at 58:30 to push Park's lead to 3-0.
McLaughlin has 13 goals on the year.
At 65:35, Beau Saar pulled Si Tanka to within two, but
Isaac scored his second and third goals of the game at 66:41 and 73:23 to
put it out of reach. Freshman Selvir Abidovic (Kansas City, Mo.)
added a goal at 80:12 on an assist from freshman Shawn Porter (Raytown,
Mo.).
Park out-shot Si Tanka 21-3.
Up next, the Pirates, who are seeded 13th, will take on
fourth-seeded Auburn University Montgomery Thursday at the College
Boulevard Activities Center starting at 5 p.m.

FOUR PIRATES NAMED TO ALL-REGION TEAM, ISAAC
EARNS REGION PLAYER OF THE YEAR HONORS
PARKVILLE, MO. --
Four members of the Park University men's soccer team (19-2-1) were named
to the All-Region IV Team over the weekend, including freshman Saidi
Isaac, who was named Region IV Player of the Year. In addition, Head
Coach Efrem Shimlis was honored as Region IV Coach of the Year.
Joining Isaac on the all-region squad are seniors
Justin Boersma (Kelowna, British Columbia) and Chris Lisaka (Nairobi,
Kenya), along with junior Simon Mulama (Kisii, Kenya).
Isaac, a native of Nairobi, Kenya, leads the Pirates
with 32 goals this season. Lisaka, a midfielder, ranks third on the
team with nine goals and seven assists. Boersma, a third-team
All-American in 2003, has two assists in 2004 as one of Park's top
defenders. Mulama has three goals and six assists this season as a
midfielder.
Shimlis has guided the Pirates to a 19-2-1 record this
season and a No. 4 national ranking en route to capturing the MCAC Regular
Season and Tournament Championships, as well as winning the NAIA Region IV
Championship last weekend.
The Pirates open the 2004 NAIA National Championship
Tournament Wednesday when they take on Si Tanka University at the College
Boulevard Activities Center in Olathe, Kan., starting at 5 p.m. The
College Boulevard Activities Center is located at the intersection of
College Boulevard and Lone Elm Road, adjacent to Olathe Northwest High
School.

PARK SEEDED 13TH AT NATIONAL TOURNEY, PLAY SI
TANKA WEDNESDAY AT 5 P.M.
OLATHE, KAN. -- The Park
University men's soccer team will play Si Tanka University Wednesday in
the first round of the 2004 NAIA National Championships at the College
Boulevard Activities Center in Olathe, Kan., at 5 p.m.
The Pirates, who were ranked fourth in the final
national rankings, earned the No. 13 seed in the tournament with a 19-2-1
overall record. Si Tanka, which is located in Huron, S.D., is the
20th seed and owns an overall record of 14-3-2.
The winner of the Park/Si Tanka first-round match moves
on to play fourth-seeded Auburn University Montgomery (17-4-0) Thursday at
5 p.m.
The quarterfinals will be played Saturday, Nov. 20,
with the semifinals and finals set to be played on Monday and Tuesday,
Nov. 22-23.

PARK QUALIFIES FOR NATIONAL TOURNAMENT WITH 8-0
WIN OVER MORNINGSIDE
PARKVILLE, MO. -- The Park University men's
soccer team (19-2-1) claimed the NAIA Region IV Championship with an 8-0
victory over Morningside College Saturday afternoon at Julian Field.
The win earns the Pirates an automatic berth in next week's NAIA National
Tournament in Olathe, Kan.
Freshman Saidi Isaac (Nairboi, Kenya) scored four goals
to lead the Pirates. Isaac, NAIA Region IV's Player of the Year, has
32 goals on the season.
Senior Enock Odede (Nairobi, Kenya) recorded three
assists and had one goal, while senior Chris Lisaka (Nairobi, Kenya),
junior Oleseh Chuks (Tulsa, Okla.) and freshman Selvir Abidovic (Kansas
City, Mo.) each scored once for Park.
The Pirates, who jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the
first half, out-shot Morningside, 16-4.
The NAIA National Championship runs Nov. 17-23 at the
College Boulevard Activities Center in Olathe. Pairings and game
times will be announced Sunday.

PIRATES DEFEAT BELLEVUE 4-2, ADVANCE TO REGION
FINAL AGAINST MORNINGSIDE
PARKVILLE, MO. -- Freshman Saidi Isaac of
the fourth-ranked Park University men's soccer team (18-2-1) scored three
goals to lead the Pirates to a 4-2 victory over Bellevue University in the
NAIA Region IV Semifinals Friday at Julian Field.
With the win, Park advances to Saturday's regional
final against second-seeded Morningside
College, which defeated Hastings, 3-2.
Isaac was also honored as NAIA Region IV's Player of
the Year following the game. The Nairobi, Kenya, native has 28 goals
this season.
The Pirates got off to a quick start against the
fifth-seeded Bruins, scoring three goals in the first 11 minutes.
Junior Simon Mulama (Kisii, Kenya) scored just 3:10 into the game and
Isaac scored a pair of goals at 7:39 and 10:40.
Bellevue chipped away at the lead, scoring first on a
goal in the 27th minute by David Oluyole to pull within two. Jon
Pagel cut the Park lead to one at 75:30, but Isaac put the game away for
the Pirates with his third goal at 79:10.
Saturday's regional final is set to begin at 3 p.m. at

MCLAUGHLIN HELPS PIRATES ESCAPE WITH 2-1 WIN OVER
OTTAWA
PARKVILLE, MO. -- Sophomore Paul
McLaughlin's goal in the 85th minute gave the Park University men's soccer
team (17-2-1) a 2-1 victory over Ottawa University Tuesday night in the
quarterfinals of the NAIA Region IV Tournament at Julian Field.
The Pirates fell behind early when Mike Powell of
Ottawa scored in the eighth minute to give the Braves a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Saidi Issac (Nairobi, Kenya) evened the game up at 1-1 in the 17th
minute on an assist by junior Simon Mulama (Kisii, Kenya).
The two teams stayed tied until the 85th minute when
McLaughlin (Ballymoney, North Ireland) scored the game winner on an assist
by Isaac. McLaughlin has 11 goals on the season.
Park will now host the semifinals and finals of the
NAIA Region IV Tournament Friday and Saturday at Julian Field. The
top-seeded Pirates will play No. 5 seed Bellevue University on Friday at 3 p.m.,
while the other semifinal will match No. 2 seed Morningside College vs. No.
3 seed Hastings College at 5:15 p.m. Saturday's regional

PARK CAPTURES MCAC TOURNAMENT TITLE WITH 3-0
VICTORY OVER NEWMAN
PARKVILLE, MO. -- The fourth-ranked Park
University men's soccer team (16-2-1) was crowned MCAC Tournament Champions
with a 3-0 victory over Newman University Saturday afternoon at Julian
Field.
Sophomore David Waithaka (Nairobi, Kenya) gave Park a
1-0 lead in the 19th minute on an assist from freshman Saidi Isaac (Nairobi,
Kenya). Isaac scored in the 26th minute on a perfect through ball by
junior Simon Mulama (Kisii, Kenya) to give the Pirates a 2-0 advantage.
Waithaka recorded his second goal of the game less than
30 seconds later on a cross by sophomore Paul McLaughlin (Ballymoney, North
Ireland).
Senior Ricardo Avalos (Chihuahua, Mexico) picked up his
10th shutout of the season, grabbing one save.
Park out-shot Newman, 10-4.

PIRATES ADVANCE TO MCAC FINAL WITH 9-0 WIN OVER
CENTRAL CHRISTIAN; WILL FACE NEWMAN SATURDAY
PARKVILLE, MO. -- The fourth-ranked Park
University men's soccer team (15-2-1) advanced to the finals of the MCAC
Tournament with a 9-0 victory over Central Christian College in Friday's
first semifinal match at Julian Field.
Freshman Saidi Issac (Nairobi, Kenya) led the Pirates
with three goals, upping his season total to 23. Junior Ross Stride
(Glasgow, Scotland) and sophomore Paul McLaughlin (Ballymoney, North
Ireland) each netted two goals. Junior Simon Mulama (Kisii, Kenya)
scored a goal and had two assists, while junior Oleseh Chuks (Tulsa, Okla.)
added a goal and an assist.

Park will play second-seeded Newman University in

PIRATE MEN'S SOCCER COLLECTS CONFERENCE HONORS
PARKVILLE, MO. -- The Park University men's
soccer team placed nine players on the All-MCAC squads announced Thursday.
In addition, freshman forward Saidi Isaac was named the league's Offensive
Player of the Year and Head Coach Efrem Shimlis was named MCAC Coach of the
Year.
Isaac, a native of Nairobi, Kenya, led Park with 20
goals this season along with three assists for 43 total points.
Shimlis, who is in his fourth season at Park, has led
the Pirates to a 14-2-1 record this season en route to finishing the regular
season ranked fourth in the nation.
Joining Isaac on the All-MCAC First Team are senior
goalkeeper Ricardo Avalos (Chihuahua, Mexico), senior defender Justin
Boersma (Kelowna, British Columbia), senior midfielder Chris Lisaka
(Nairobi, Kenya), senior midfielder Enock Odede (Nairobi, Kenya) and junior
defender Oleseh Chuks (Tulsa, Okla.).
Junior midfielder Henok Belayneh (Addis Ababa,

PARK SET TO HOST 2004 MCAC MEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT
PARKVILLE, MO. -- Pairings were announced
Monday for the 2004 MCAC Men's Soccer Tournament hosted by Park University
at Julian Field this weekend.
On Friday, top-seeded Park (14-2-1, 5-0 MCAC) will meet
fourth-seeded Central Christian (9-7-1, 1-3-1 MCAC) at 3 p.m. In the
other semifinal match, second-seeded Newman (9-6-3, 4-1 MCAC) will take on
third-seeded Bellevue (8-9-1, 2-2-1 MCAC) at 5:15 p.m.
Saturday's championship game is set for a 3 p.m. start.

FOURTH-RANKED PARK FALLS 2-0 AT NO. 2 LINDSEY
WILSON
COLUMBIA, KY. -- The fourth-ranked Park University
men's soccer team (14-2-1) dropped a 2-0 decision at second-ranked Lindsey
Wilson College Saturday night in Columbia, Ky.
Lindsey Wilson scored at 58:24 and 89:15 to pick up the
victory. Both teams recorded 11 shots, while Lindsey Wilson had five
shots on goal, compared to two for Park.
The Pirates will host the MCAC Tournament next Friday
and Saturday at Julian Field. Park will play in the 3 p.m. game on
Friday, which is followed by the No. 2 seed vs. No. 3 seed match-up at 5:15
p.m. Saturday's championship game is slated for a 3 p.m. start.

PIRATES PICK UP REGIONAL VICTORY OVER HASTINGS, 2-0
PARKVILLE, MO. -- The fourth-ranked Park University
men's soccer team (14-1-1) defeated Hastings College 2-0 Tuesday night at
Julian Field.
Senior Ricardo Avalos (Chihuahua, Mexico) recorded his
eighth shutout of the season in goal for the Pirates, grabbing five saves.
Avalos, along with fellow seniors Justin Boersma (Kelowna, B.C.), Chris
Lisaka (Nairobi, Kenya), Mekete Gashaw (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) and Enock
Odede (Nairobi, Kenya) all were honored before the game during senior day
activities.
Junior Oleseh Chuks (Tulsa, Okla.) got Park off to a
quick start with a goal just 1:35 into the game. Junior Henok Belayneh
(Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead in the 39th minute on an
assist from Lisaka.
Up next, Park will travel to Columbia, Ky., to take on
second-ranked Lindsey Wilson College on Saturday starting at 7 p.m.

Isaac, a native of Nairobi, Kenya, scored five goals
last week, including the game-winner against William Jewell in double
overtime Saturday. Isaac, who earned the same honors on Sept. 23,
leads the Pirates with 20 goals this season.
Park, which clinched the MCAC regular season title with
its win over Oklahoma Wesleyan on Thursday, returns to action next Tuesday,
Oct. 26, against Hastings College at Julian Field starting at 5 p.m.

game-winner on an assist by senior Mekete Gashaw (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) in
the second overtime to lift the Pirates to the victory. Isaac leads
Park with 20 goals this season.

PARKVILLE, MO. -- The fourth-ranked Park University
men's soccer team (12-1-1, 5-0 MCAC) wrapped up the MCAC regular season
conference championship with a 7-0 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan Thursday night
at Julian Field. With the win, the Pirates will now host the
conference tournament Nov. 5-6.
Senior Chris Lisaka (Nairobi, Kenya) scored two goals
and had an assist to lead Park.
Junior Ross Stride (Glasgow, Scotland), junior Henok
Belayneh (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia), sophomore Paul McLaughlin (Ballymoney,

PARKVILLE, MO. -- After falling behind 2-0 in the
first 24 minutes of the game, the fourth-ranked Park University men's soccer
team (11-1-1, 4-0 MCAC) scored five unanswered goals to net a 5-2 victory
over York College Tuesday night at Julian Field.
Gary Carr gave York an early 1-0 lead in the 14th
minute on an assist from Colbert Bertrand. Carr then assisted on a
goal by Nathan Anderson in the 24th minute, giving York a 2-0 advantage.
Senior Chris Lisaka (Nairobi, Kenya) pulled the Pirates
to within one in the 28th minute on an assist from freshman Fethalew Ayalew
(Toronto, Ontario).
In the second half, sophomore Paul McLaughlin (Ballymoney,
North Ireland) evened the game up at 2-2 on an unassisted goal in the 48th
minute.
Freshman Saidi Isaac (Nairobi, Kenya) scored the
game-winner for the Pirates in the 65th minute on an assist from senior
Mekete Gashaw (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia). Isaac added two insurance goals
for Park en route to the 5-2 win. He leads the team with 18 goals this
season.
The Pirates out-shot York, 40-6.

a hat trick, pushing his team-leading season goal total to 15.
Sophomore Paul McLaughlin (Ballymoney, North Ireland)
scored two goals for the Pirates. McLaughlin has six goals this
season.
Junior Ross Stride (Glasgow, Scotland) and sophomore
David Waithaka (Nairobi, Kenya) each added a goal a piece.
Morningside's lone goal came from Joel Nelson in the
70th minute.

PIRATES JUMP TO FOURTH IN LATEST NAIA TOP 25 POLL
PARKVILLE, MO. -- The Park University men's soccer
team (9-1-1 overall, 2-0 MCAC) jumped five spots to No. 4 in this week's
NSCAA/adidas NAIA Top 25 Poll released Tuesday.
The Pirates, who were ranked ninth last week, defeated
then-third-ranked Lindenwood University, 1-0, last Tuesday at Julian Field.
On Saturday, Park pulled out a 1-0 victory in double overtime over Newman
University in Wichita, Kan.
Park returns to action Friday when it hosts Morningside
College at Julian Field at 7 p.m.

LISAKA, AVALOS GARNER MCAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
PARKVILLE, MO. -- Seniors Chris Lisaka and Ricardo
Avalos of the fourth-ranked Park University men's soccer team (9-1-1) earned
conference player of the week honors Monday night. Lisaka was named
the MCAC's Offensive Player of the Week, while Avalos earned Defensive
Player of the Week honors.
Lisaka, a native of Nairobi, Kenya, scored the
game-winner against Newman University on Saturday in Wichita, Kan. The
goal, which was his fifth of the season, came with just 21 seconds left in
the second overtime.
A native of Chihuahua, Mexico, Avalos tallied a pair of
shutouts last week. On Tuesday, he had eight saves in a 1-0 win over
then-third-ranked Lindenwood University. Against Newman, he recorded
his fifth shutout of the season, grabbing one save. Avalos owns a
0.342 GAA and a 7-0-1 record on the year.
The Pirates return to the field Friday when they host
Morningside College at Julian Field at 7 p.m.

NEWMAN
WICHITA, KAN. -- The ninth-ranked Park
University men's soccer team (9-1-1) came away with a 1-0 double overtime

Park turned in a solid defensive performance, holding
Newman to just two shots, compared to 19 for the Pirates. Senior
goalkeeper Ricardo Avalos (Chihuahua, Mexico) recorded his fifth shutout of
the season with one save.
Up next, Park will host Morningside College on Friday

AVALOS, NO. 9 PIRATES SHUTOUT NO. 3 LINDENWOOD, 1-0
PARKVILLE, MO. -- The ninth-ranked Park
University men's soccer (8-1-1) shutout third-ranked Lindenwood University,
1-0, Wednesday night at Julian Field.
Senior goalkeeper Ricardo Avalos (Chihuahua, Mexico)
recorded his fourth shutout of the season with eight saves to lead the
Pirates.
Junior Oleseh Chuks (Tulsa, Okla.) scored Park's only
goal in the 40th minute. Chuks headed in the goal on a ball which had
deflected off the Lindenwood goalkeepers' hands on a Park corner kick.
The Pirates were out-shot by Lindenwood, 12-9.
Park returns to the field Saturday when it travels to
Wichita, Kan., for an MCAC contest with Newman University starting at 7 p.m.

AVALOS NAMED MCAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
PARKVILLE, MO. -- Senior Ricardo Avalos of the
ninth-ranked Park University men's soccer team (7-1-1, 2-0 MCAC) was named
MCAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for the week ending Sept. 26.
A native of Chihuahua, Mexico, Avalos posted a shut out
and had one save in Park's 6-0 win over Central Christian College last
Wednesday. On Saturday, he recorded four saves and gave up one goal in
a 1-1 tie at Baker University.
Park hosts third-ranked Lindenwood University Wednesday

The ninth-ranked Park University men's soccer
team (7-1-1) played to a 1-1 tie after two overtimes at Baker University
Saturday afternoon in Baldwin City, Kan.
Junior Simon Mulama (Kisii, Kenya) scored Park's lone
goal in the 25th minute on an assist from senior Enock Odede (Nairobi,
Kenya). Baker tied the game up in the 78th minute on a goal by Ben
Martin.
Senior Ricardo Avalos (Chihuahua, Mexico) grabbed four
saves in goal for the Pirates.
Park returns to action Wednesday night when it hosts
nationally-ranked Lindenwood University at Julian Field starting at 7 p.m.

ISAAC NAMED MCAC, REGION IV PLAYER OF THE WEEK
PARKVILLE, MO. -- Freshman Saidi
Isaac of the ninth-ranked Park University men's soccer team was named MCAC
and NAIA Region IV Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 19.
Isaac, a native of Nairobi, Kenya, scored a total of
six goals and had two assists in Park's three victories last week over the
University of St. Mary (W, 3-0), Avila University (W, 12-0) and Bellevue
University (2-1).
With three goals in Wednesday's 6-0 win over Central
Christian College, Isaac leads Park with 12 goals on the season.
Up next, the Pirates will meet Baker University in
Baldwin City, Kan., Saturday at 2 p.m.

Pirates with three goals, upping his season total to 12. Senior Chris

NINTH-RANKED PARK RECORDS 2-1 WIN AT BELLEVUE
BELLEVUE, NEB. The ninth-ranked Park
University men's soccer team improved to 6-1 on the season with a 2-1
victory over Bellevue University Sunday afternoon in Bellevue, Neb.
The Bruins got on the board first in the 14th minute on
a goal by Jose Vargas. Bellevue took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Freshman Saidi Isaac (Nairobi, Kenya) evened the match
in the 55th minute on his team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Senior Enock Odede (Nairobi, Kenya) then scored the game-winner in the 80th
minute to secure the MCAC victory for the Pirates. Odede now has three
goals on the season.
Park travels to McPherson, Kan., Wednesday to take on
Central Christian College in a conference clash starting at 4:30 p.m.

OVER ST. MARY
LEAVENWORTH, KAN. Behind a pair of
goals from freshman Saidi Isaac, the ninth-ranked Park University men's
soccer team improved to 4-1 on the season with a 3-0 victory over the
University of St. Mary Tuesday afternoon.
Isaac, a native of Nairobi, Kenya, opened the scoring
in the 15th minute on an assist by senior Enock Odede (Nairobi, Kenya).
Isaac gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead in the 43rd minute thanks to an assist
from junior Henok Belayneh (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia). Isaac leads the
team with five goals on the season.
Sophomore Paul McLaughlin (Ballymoney, North Ireland)
closed out the scoring for Park in the 64th minute on Belayneh's second
assist of the game. McLaughlin, who was named MCAC Player of the Week
on Monday, upped his season goal total to four.
The Pirates out-shot St. Mary, 21-3.
Park returns to action Thursday when it hosts Avila

PARK MEN'S SOCCER RANKED NINTH IN NAIA TOP 25 POLL
PARKVILLE, MO. The Park University
men's soccer team (3-1) is ranked ninth in the latest NSCAA/adidas NAIA
National Rankings released Tuesday.
The Pirates, who were ranked 15th in last week's poll,
also moved into the No. 1 position in the NAIA Region IV rankings.
Park is in action this afternoon at the University of
St. Mary in Leavenworth, Kan., starting at 3 p.m.

McLAUGHLIN NAMED MCAC MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE
WEEK
PARKVILLE, MO. Sophomore Paul
McLaughlin of the Park University men's soccer team was named MCAC Offensive
Player of the Week Monday.
The Ballymoney, North Ireland, native scored all three
of Park's goals in a 3-2 double overtime victory over Benedictine College on
Thursday, Sept. 9. McLaughlin netted the game-winner in the 103rd
minute to lift the 15th-ranked Pirates to 3-1 on the season.
Park will take on the University of St. Mary Tuesday in
Leavenworth, Kan., starting at 3 p.m.

OVER BENEDICTINE
ATCHISON, KS Behind three goals from
sophomore Paul McLaughlin, the 15th-ranked Park University mens
soccer team improved to 3-1 on the season with a 3-2 victory over
Benedictine College in double overtime Thursday.
McLaughlin, a native of Ballymoney, North Ireland,
scored the game-winner in the 103rd minute on an assist from
senior Enock Odede (Nairobi, Kenya).
Benedictine jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half,
but McLaughlin tied it up in the 55th minute on a penalty shot.
Benedictine regained the lead, 2-1, but McLaughlin evened it up again in the
83rd minute on an assist from senior Chris Lisaka (Nairobi,
Kenya).
Park out-shot Benedictine 24-10 and held a 9-5
advantage in corner kicks.
The Pirates return to action Tuesday when they travel

NO. 5 PARK TAKES 3-0 VICTORY OVER DOANE COLLEGE
PARKVILLE, MO. The fifth-ranked Park
University men's soccer team tallied a 3-0 win over Doane College Saturday
afternoon at Julian Field.
Freshman Saidi Isaac (Nairobi, Kenya) put the Pirates on
the board first with a goal in the 30th minute on an assist from junior
Henok Belayneh (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia). Senior Mekete Gashaw (Addis
Ababa, Ethiopia) gave Park a 2-0 lead in the 39th minute thanks to an assist
from Issac. Senior Chris Liska (Nairobi, Kenya) added the Pirates'
final goal in the 48th minute, which was assisted by Gashaw.
Park out-shot Doane on the day 34-3 and held a 13-0
advantage in corner kicks.
The Pirates return to the field Thursday when they
travel to Atchison, Kan., to take on Benedictine College at 4 p.m.

STRIDE LEADS FIFTH-RANKED PIRATES TO 3-2 OT WIN
OVER GRACELAND
PARKVILLE, MO. Behind a pair of goals
from junior forward Ross Stride, the fifth-ranked Park University men's
soccer team (1-1) rallied for a 3-2 victory in overtime over Graceland
University Tuesday night at Julian Field.
Stride, a native of Glasgow, Scotland, scored the game
winner in the 98th minute on an assist from freshman Fethalew Ayalew
(Toronto, Ontario).
Freshman Saidi Isaac (Nairobi, Kenya) opened the scoring
for the Pirates, recording his second goal of the season in the 21st minute
on an assist from senior Mekete Gashaw (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia).
Graceland answered in the 43rd minute with goal from Wesley Hodgson.
The Yellow Jackets then took a 2-1 lead on a penalty
kick by Corby Robertson in the 53rd minute, but Park responded with a
penalty kick of its own, as Stride evened the game up at 2-2 in the 65th
minute.
The Pirates return to action Saturday when they host
Doane at Julian Field starting at 3:30 p.m.

NO. 5 PARK FALLS 4-1 AT NO. 15 SOUTHERN NAZARENE IN
SEASON OPENER
BETHANY, OKLA. The fifth-ranked Park
University men's soccer team fell to 0-1 on the season with a 4-1 loss at
15th-ranked Southern Nazarene University Saturday afternoon.
Park jumped out to a 1-0 lead on freshman Saidi Isaac's
(Nairobi, Kenya) goal in the 14th minute, which was assisted by junior Ross
Stride (Glasgow, Scotland). But in the 37th minute, Park senior
goalkeeper Ricardo Avalos (Chihuahua, Mexico) was given a red card, forcing
the Pirates to play a man down the final 53 minutes of the game.
SNU capitalized, first scoring on the ensuing penalty
kick and adding goals in the 58th, 73rd and 88th minutes.
Park returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Graceland
University at Julian Field starting at 7 p.m.

Men's Soccer 2004 Season Preview
PARK MEN'S SOCCER ENTERS 2004 SEASON RANKED FIFTH
PARKVILLE, MO. The Park University
men's soccer team, which posted a 14-8-1 record a year ago, will take a No.
5 national ranking into the 2004 season. The Pirates were ranked fifth in
the NAIA Preseason Top 25 released last week.
Head Coach Efrem Shimlis returns 10 players with
starting experience from last season's squad, which captured both the
regular season and postseason MCAC championships and advanced to the
quarterfinals of the NAIA national tournament.
Senior midfielder Enock Odede (Nairobi, Kenya)
highlights the returning class after earning third-team All-American honors
last season. Odede scored 14 goals and had 14 assists to lead the Pirates
with 42 points.
Sophomore forward Paul McLaughlin (Ballymoney, North
Ireland) and senior defender Justin Boersma (Kelwna, British Columbia) also
earned All-America honors in 2003, being named to the honorable mention
squad. McLaughlin tied for the team lead in goals with 14, while Boersma
started all 23 games as a defender.
In goal, junior Ricardo Avalos (Chihuahua, Mexico)
returns after posting 10 shutouts last season, along with a 1.00 goals
against average and a .832 save percentage.
Juniors Henok Belayneh (Forward, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia)
and Ross Stride (Forward, Glasgow, Scotland) are back after scoring 12 and
11 goals, respectively. Other returning starters include senior Chris
Lisaka (Midfielder, Nairobi, Kenya), senior Mekete Gashaw (Midfielder, Addis
Ababa, Ethiopia), junior Felix Makachia (Defender, Nairobi, Kenya) and
sophomore David Waithaka (Midfielder, Nairobi, Kenya).
Park will face a challenging schedule in 2004, starting
with the season opener this Saturday (Aug. 28) at 15th-ranked
Southern Nazarene (Okla.). Also featured on the schedule this season is No.
2 (tie) Hastings (Neb.), No. 2 (tie) Lindenwood (Mo.) and No. 8 (tie)
Lindsey Wilson (Ky.).
"We have a group of solid, hard working and dedicated players," said Shimlis,
who enters his fourth season at Park. "I expect them to develop into a
cohesive, focused and dynamic team."
