FAULCONER SISTERS FIND NO MYSTERY IN SISTERHOOD, SOFTBALL
PARKVILLE,
MO—Frank and Cathy Faulconer of Grain Valley, Mo. have waited a
long time to see their daughters play on the same interscholastic
softball team. To be exact,
they’ve waited nineteen years. But the 2001 season has ended their
waiting. Sisters, Michelle,
a senior, and Sherry, a freshman, have finally landed positions on the
same playing field, for the same program, on the same scenic suburban
university campus as active players on the 2001 Park University
women’s fastpitch softball team.
Michelle
Faulconer, just three years older Sherry, came to Park University as a
freshman in 1997. Before
that, she was a three-sport letterwinner at Grain Valley High
School,
collecting awards and recording accomplishments in basketball, softball
and volleyball. As a
softball player, Michelle played at first and third base while rotating
at catcher.
In 1997, when Sherry was a high school freshman and Michelle was
a senior, the pair was on target to play together.
Their season together, however, was delayed when Sherry suffered
a season ending ACL injury.
“I blew out my knee one week before districts in basketball,”
said Sherry. “That put me
out for the rest of the [softball] season.”
Sherry returned the following year, after older sister Michelle
had begun her collegiate playing career at Park University.
During Sherry’s sophomore season with the Grain Valley Eagles,
she pitched a perfect game and set the Grain Valley High School record
for strikeouts in a season. As
a pitcher, Sherry has made an immediate impact at Park University this
season. Midway through the
season, she has a 7-3 record with one save and a 2.18 ERA.
She also has a team-best 3:1 strikeout to walk ratio.
Michelle has been honored for numerous softball accomplishments.
In three seasons at Park, she has been named to the Region V
All-Region Second Team, AMC All-Conference First Team, and AMC Academic
All-Conference Team. She
was also the AMC Freshman of the Year in 1998.
She cites “finally getting to play with my sister” has her
most significant athletic accomplishment.
“It’s exceptional for siblings to play together at the
college level,” said Claude English, Director of Athletics for Park
University. “But it’s even more special when they are impact
players. It really says a
lot about Sherry and Michelle that they’ve been able to play together
at the intercollegiate level. I
can think of only two or three times that we’ve had siblings playing
the same sport at Park. That
in itself is an outstanding accomplishment.”
Reflecting on their childhood, Sherry and Michelle agreed that
they fought about “anything and everything.”
Nonetheless, they’ve developed into a successful pitching and
catching duo, if only for this one season.
“I don’t really have any memories of my sister and me playing
together until this year,” Sherry, a History and Secondary Education
major, said. “But in the
first game that we played together, I pitched and she caught.
I remember winning that game.”
Sherry and Michelle also understand the special meaning their
season together holds for their family.
“This has meant the world to my family,” said Michelle. “It
not only makes it much easier to get to see both of us play, but they
are getting to see what it could have been in high school only on a much
higher level.”
“We did not get to play together in high school so now our
family will get to see what the whole mystery is about,” Sherry said.
Less mysterious is the objective shared by Sherry and Michelle
Faulconer and the Park University women’s softball program headed by
first-year head coach Julie True.
“I would really like to make it to the [NAIA Region V
Tournament] and from there go to nationals,” Sherry said.
Currently, the Park University women’s softball team is ranked
9th in Region V with a record of 11-8.
The top six teams in Region V advance to the tournament.

WOMEN’S TRACK FINISHES TENTH AT NAIA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS; FIVE
HONORED AS ALL-AMERICANS
PARKVILLE,
MO—The Park University women’s track team, led by senior and
six-time NAIA All-American Mikki Massey, finished tenth at the NAIA
National Championships in Abbotsford, British Columbia, May 24-26.
As a team, Park University scored 32
points; Park gained ten of
those points when Massey won the women’s marathon on Saturday, leading
the thirty-one runner field with a time of three hours, five minutes and
eleven seconds. The time was also a new school record for Park.
All-Americans
Reagan Mackey, a freshman from The Bahamas; Keisha Robb, a freshman from
St. Catherine, Jamaica; Veronica Brown, a freshman from Orlando,
Florida; and Crystal Bethel, a sophomore from Nassau, The Bahamas,
teamed up to score points in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays.
Robb finished fourth in the 200-meter dash in 24.43 seconds;
Bethel took fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.14 seconds.
It
was the last meet for Massey, holder of seven Park University women’s
track records.
In four years at Park, Massey was named All-American in six
seasons between track and cross-country; her honors count is even higher
if measured by the number of separate events in which she scored.
For
the men’s program, freshman Mabior Atem from Kansas City, Mo., was the
lone representative.
He finished fifth in the 1500-meter run, running an All-American
time, but was disqualified on a technicality.
Late in the race while runners were nudging for inside position,
Atem was bumped off the track.
Rather than return to the running surface immediately, he took
two strides in the grass, more than was allowable by the judges’
standards.
