2003 Softball Preview
FAULCONER LEADS PARK IN CHASE FOR MCAC TITLE
PARKVILLE, MO—The 2003 Park University women’s softball program,
complete with seven newcomers and five letterwinners, intends to build
on the late-season streak from 2002 that brought them to 21-12-1 setting
all-time records with a .618 winning percentage and just twelve losses,
the best ever in Park’s eight-year softball history. The 2002 Pirates
won 14 of their final 17 games and came within votes of advancing to the
NAIA Region V Tournament.
Ace pitcher, Sherry
Faulconer, returns to the Pirates’
lineup this year, coming off a season of 18 wins while averaging 6.54
strikeouts per game; a junior from Grain Valley, Mo., Faulconer finished
second on the team in hitting with an average of .342. She is joined by
Jennifer Eickhoff, a freshman from St. Louis, who, along with freshman
Lacey McCormick, will allow Faulconer more playing time at first and
third.
Racheal Mead, a junior transfer from North Central Missouri,
is an experienced leader who will replace catcher Sylvia Naungayan, a
2002 graduate. According to head coach Julie True-Davis, Mead is a
vocal player who also has the potential for powerful hitting.
In her first two seasons, True-Davis didn’t enjoy a single
post-season game, despite a winning percentage above .500, because of
Park’s status as an Independent. In 2003, Park joins the Midlands
Collegiate Athletic Conference, facing off against rivals Bellevue,
College of St. Mary and Newman University. True-Davis also regards
Washburn University, coached by first-year coach Lisa Carey, and Central
Missouri State University, led by legendary coach Rhesa Sumrell, as
formidable NCAA Division II opponents on the schedule this season.
Among the newcomers this season, Tiffany Bears, a junior
college transfer from North Central Missouri, is expected to impact the
outfield. She is an experienced centerfielder with a strong arm who,
according to True-Davis, will earn respect among conference opponents
for her base running abilities.
Infielder and freshman Brooke
Woolery, a native of Shawnee,
Kan., is a solid middle infielder who lead the team from the short
stop position. “She has great range,” said True-Davis, “a cannon for an
arm and can turn the double play quickly. Brooke comes from a very
competitive summer ball team, the KC Peppers, and she brings this
attitude to the team. She has a big swing and if she can be a
disciplined hitter at the plate, she will be batting in the top of the
line up.”
In the MCAC preseason coaches’ poll, Park University was
slotted fourth, but the program has intentions of disregarding the
forecasted outcome and playing into the Region IV playoffs. With no
seniors on the roster, True-Davis is optimistic about the accessibility
of ambitious goals in the seasons ahead.
“We are a very energetic and intense team,” said True-Davis.
“I believe it will be our tough defense that will win ball games for
us. When we make errors it will be because we are being too aggressive
and not because we are sitting back on our heels. Our batting order
will be strong 1 thru 9, and as long as we do the little things at the
plate whether it be executing a sacrifice bunt, a slap, or a hit and run
we are going to put runs on the scoreboard.”
Park University begins the 2003 softball season on Saturday,
February 22, in an afternoon matchup with MidAmerica Nazarene University
at 3:00 p.m. at home.

BARBOSA JOINS ROCKFORD
RIVERHAWKS IN THE FRONTIER LEAGUE
PARKVILLE, MO--Joe Barbosa, a senior right-handed pitcher for the Park
University baseball program in 2003, recently made four pitching
appearances with the Rockford Riverhawks. Barbosa led the Pirates in
hitting over the past two seasons; he was third nationally in hitting for
2002 with a .473 batting average. In 2003, Barbosa batted .412 while
going 7-1 from the mound. He accumulated a team-best 55 strikeouts
last spring. In four appearances with the Riverhawks, Barbosa made
two starts, throwing 12.1 innings and garnering 13 strikeouts.

LUNDY NAMED HEAD COACH AFTER WINNINGEST SEASON TO
DATE
PARKVILLE, MO--Cary Lundy has been named the head baseball coach at Park
University, effective immediately. A 1982 graduate of Park, Lundy
served the program as the interim head coach since October, leading the
program to its first 30-win season since baseball was reinaugurated in
2000. His leadership involved the program in NAIA Champions of Character
initiatives for volunteer instructional support at a recent Mickey Owens
baseball camp on the Parkville campus and a cleanup day at an area youth
baseball facility.
Lundy's coaching success is reflected in his work with
the Kansas City, Mo., Ban Johnson League where he has coached the UMB Bank
team to five league championships in twelve years, including an
unprecedented four consecutive titles. An alumnus of Oak Park High
School, Lundy competed in basketball and baseball as a student-athlete at
Park in the early 1980's. He has been a recommending scout for the
Cincinnati Reds since 1989.
"We're excited to add a talented, dedicated coach to
our staff," said Claude English, Director of Athletics. "Cary has
demonstrated his commitment to Park as well as an outstanding rapport with
our students."

Oxford, Kan., batted .347 in conference play with four home runs and a.569
slugging percentage. Barbosa led Park in hitting for the second
consecutive year, batting .412 overall with eight home runs (.444 in MCAC
play, with five home runs); however, his selection to the All-Conference
team was for his pitching. He went a perfect 5-0 in MCAC play,
averaging 6.8 strikeouts per outing, .5 walks and 1.32 earned runs per
outing.

2003 Baseball Preview
HOTTEST BATS IN NAIA BASEBALL RETURN TO ACTION THIS
WEEKEND
PARKVILLE, MO--Weather permitting; Park University, the national team-hitting leader in 2002, will open the 2003 baseball season this weekend.
Park has doubleheaders scheduled for Saturday, February 15, at William
Jewell College and Monday, February 17, at Ottawa University.
Unlike the teams of the past three seasons, the 2003 Pirates
will compete for a conference championship in the Midlands Collegiate
Athletic Conference (MCAC). In the past two seasons, Park played an
independent schedule, making it considerably more difficult to vie for a
post-season playoff bid. In three years, the program has a cumulative
record of 70-58-1 (.543), with just one playoff appearance during the
inaugural 2000 season. Interim head coach Cary Lundy has clear plans to
return to post-season play, challenging league contenders Bellevue (Neb.)
(#4 in NAIA Preseason National Poll), Newman (Kan.), Peru State (Neb.) and
College of the Ozarks (Mo.) for a conference title and Region IV playoff
slot.
Lundy acknowledges the significant losses from last season as
outfielder Alan Singletary, left-handed pitcher Nathan Priest, and
outfielder Marcus Thomas. Singletary led the team in home runs and runs
scored last year. Priest, an NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete, was a top
pitcher, and Thomas contributed solid offense and leadership.
In their place, junior college transfers R.J. Nab, Joe Pickett
and Stephen Williams are expected to fill the vacancies left by last year’s
seniors. Pickett and Williams, both pitchers, will find immediate spots in
Park’s rotation—a group with more depth and experience than the Pirates’
staffs in recent seasons.
Freshmen Mohammed Mohammed (North Kansas City), Aaron Courter
(Winnetonka)
and Dusty Hylton (Platte County) will play significant roles as Park squares
off against national powers Benedictine College (Kan.) and Culver-Stockton
College (Mo.) this season. Lundy also recognized Ottawa University (Kan.)
as a team on the schedule, in addition to MCAC Conference opponents, in a
position to win several games in the season ahead.
In 2002, Park University led the nation in hitting with a team
.360 batting average. Thirteen letterwinners, including Joe Barbosa, who
finished 2002 ranked third nationally in hitting with an average of .473,
return to the 2003 roster. Aces Jarrod Tyson (SR, Shawnee Mission West) and
Mike Murphy (SO, St. Pius X) each threw no-hit shutouts in 2002. Murphy was
honored as a National Player of the Week in early April last season. Tyson
and Murphy are expected to lead this year’s group of pitchers.
“Out pitching staff is the deepest that we have had,” Lundy
said, “and offensively, we should continue to be a good hitting team.”

this weekend in Overland Park, Kan., at Johnson County Community College.
Head coach Brian Renshaw looks for his teams to build on the successes of
the indoor season, which culminated earlier this month at the NAIA
National Championships in Johnson City, Tenn. Park’s women’s team,
represented by Crystal Bethell and Jelena Tasic, finished 14th
overall with 16 points; the men, represented by Mabior Atem, finished 35th
overall with 5 points.
Renshaw cited the absence of graduate Josh Shaffer as the most
significant loss from the 2002 roster. A sprinter with experience on the
national level, Shaffer was an All-American on the 2001 4x400-meter relay
team. Freshman cross country phenom Keith Longuski, a native of Ubly,
Mich., will challenge the field to capture meet points for the 2003
squad.
Renshaw regards the final one-third of the season as the most
challenging. Park will compete against NCAA Division I and II
institutions at the Drake Relays and Kansas Relays in late April. From
the women’s team, Tasic is expected to register notable marks as a
jumper. She competed as a member of the Yugoslavian National Team before
coming to Park this year as a freshman. Bethell, a junior, and senior
Jessica Ferguson will bolster Park’s ability to compete in a wide variety
of events.
“Our
2003 team is highly competitive,” said Renshaw. “They’re knowledgeable,
but they are willing to learn anything and everything about track and
their events.”
