2004 Softball Preview
PARK DUSTS OFF THE PLATE; 2004 SEASON STARTS
TOMORROW
PARKVILLE, MO--On Friday, Park University softball will get their first
sampling of the 2004 season; the Pirates head to Fulton, Mo., for
afternoon games against Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) and William Woods
University (Mo.) in their opening games of the spring.
With a refurbished lineup from a year ago, first-year
head coach Monica Wade, an alumna who lettered in both softball and soccer
at Park in the mid-1990's, the 2004 Pirates begin the season with a
formidable schedule that includes six games against NCAA Division II
opponents and a trip to the notoriously competitive Oklahoma City
University Tournament in mid-April. In the Midlands Collegiate Athletic
Conference, Park was predicted to finish fourth this season--a forecast
established by a poll of coaches in the league. Park was ordered behind
College of St. Mary (Neb.), Bellevue University (Neb.) and Newman
University (Kan.) in a pattern that matches the final standings from last
season when Park finished 10-5 in the conference. In the postseason
tournament, Park bowed out with losses to #1 College of St. Mary and #3
Bellevue University; both losses were by one run.
Five new players have joined the program this season,
mixing in with eight returning letterwinners. Sophomore catcher Lindsay
Sharp (Winnetonka), sophomore pitcher Holly Gentry (Rossville, Fort
Scott), and sophomore infielder Shannon Brink (Oak Park) transferred to
Park. Freshman Katie Immele (Grandview) and sophomore Kate Johnson (Winnetonka)
are also new to the program this year.
All eight returners were regular starters and key
contributors last year; Tiffany Bears, Sherry Faulconer, and Racheal Mead
are the seniors on the roster. They'll share leadership roles heading into
this year's 44-game schedule. Bears, an outfielder from Lee's Summit, Mo.,
ranked third on the team last season with 12 RBI. She batted .276 and drew
11 walks at the plate as an MCAC All-Conference Honorable Mention
selection last season. Faulconer earned a place on the MCAC All-Conference
First Team. She hit .343 with a team-leading 24 RBI while also pitching in
19 games and closing out a team-high 15 complete games in 2003. Mead
finished 2003 with a .311 batting average with seven RBI and three
doubles.
Other returners include infielder Brooke Woolery (MCAC
All-Conference Second Team, 15 doubles), outfielder Racheal Stoops (.308,
10 RBI), catcher Trista Tomasek (13 R, 10 RBI), pitcher Jennifer Eickhoff
(54 IP, 4.75 ERA), and outfielder Ashley Rich (4 R, 7 RBI). Assistant
coach Julie Vittetoe (Park, 2000) is also making her debut with the
program. Park University women's softball is entering its tenth season of
NAIA competition; in nine seasons, the program is 177-177-1 (.500).

'04 PIRATES MARKED BY NEW FACES, ROBUST
RECRUITING CLASS
PARKVILLE, MO--Second year head coach Cary Lundy is accompanied by sixteen
new players and ten returning letterwinners looking ahead at the 2004
season. Lundy's 2003 squad sported a record of 30-16, winding up third in
the MCAC with a conference record of 18-6. This year, the group was chosen
fourth in a preseason coaches' poll, behind Bellevue, Newman and College
of the Ozarks.
By the end of last season, Lundy brought the program to
its 100th win in four years (100-74-1, .571); it was also the first 30-win
season since Park re-established the program in 2000 after a nearly
two-decade layoff.
Park's 2004 schedule features perennially strong
conference rivals Bellevue, Newman, College of the Ozarks, Peru State,
Oklahoma Wesleyan, York, and Central Christian. The Pirates will square
off against several NAIA Region V opponents, too, including Evangel,
MidAmerica Nazarene, Baker, Graceland, Culver-Stockton, William Jewell and
Benedictine.
Pitching stands as the most significant area of
overhaul for Lundy's Pirates. Only one pitcher, sophomore Mike Johnson,
returns to the rotation from a year ago. Johnson threw in six games last
season, tossing a total of 18 innings and establishing a 5.83 ERA in his
first year in the program. Newcomers Kenny Theerman (JR, Macon, Mo.),
Stanley Thresher (FR, Independence, Mo.), Adam Clay (JR, Kansas City,
Mo.), Bryan Larson (JR, Weber, Utah), Ryne Mendez (FR, Kansas City, Kan.)
and Taylor Seedorff (FR, Platte City, Mo.) will contribute from the mound
this spring.
Seniors Hank Edwards and R.J. Nab hold the hottest bats
returning from last season. Edwards shared the team lead with eight
homeruns; he held down a .311 batting average with 25 RBI and a slugging
percentage of .656. Nab batted .333 with 19 RBI and seven doubles. In
limited action (25 games out of 44), catcher Travis Cunningham carries
forward a .339 batting average, notching 21 hits in 62 at-bats last year.
This offensive core is joined by Luke Johnson (JR,
Springfield, Mo.), Ross McCoy (FR, Basehor, Kan.), Joel Bozarth (FR,
Kansas City, Mo.), Roy Rush (SO, Kansas City, Kan.), Fred Kraft (SO,
Overland Park, Kan.), Robby Reed (SR, Claremore, Okla.), Blake Brauer (FR,
Kansas City, Mo.), Chris Clubine (FR, Kansas City, Mo.), Dane Phillippe
(SR, Independence, Mo.) and Daniel Redman (FR, Clarinda, Iowa).
The Pirates are scheduled to play the first home games
of the 2004 season at Comfort Field on Saturday, February 28, at 1:00 p.m.
against University of St. Mary from Leavenworth, Kan.
