ATHLETICS ARCHIVED NEWS
Friday, July 29, 2005 This season, Park defeated William Jewell by a final score of 21.5 to 18.5. “The Townsend Trophy was set up to showcase the two outstanding liberal arts schools in the Northland and I think this season’s competition did just that,” said Claude English, Park’s Director of Athletics. “Every time the Pirates and Cardinals play, each team has a great desire to win, but there is also a tremendous amount of respect for the opposing team, which is why this competition has become so successful.” The Pirates’ triumph was fueled by victories by the men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, women’s cross country, women’s golf, men’s indoor track and field and women’s indoor track and field squads, including scoring crucial bonus points by placing at the indoor and outdoor men’s track and field championships. William Jewell, which won the inaugural event, accumulated its points with wins in women’s soccer, men’s cross country, women’s basketball, softball, men’s outdoor track and field and women’s outdoor track and field. The two schools split in men’s basketball during the season, with each team winning on the road. “Our victory is a tribute to the outstanding student-athletes and coaches we have here at Park,” English said. “We are already looking forward to another great season of competition with William Jewell in 2005-06.” The trophy presentation will take place Aug. 18 at Park’s Woodard Conference Center during a luncheon, which will be attended by coaches, student-athletes and administrators from the two schools. In addition, the trophy will be presented by the Townsend family, whom the trophy was named after in honor of their long-standing support of Park and William Jewell. (Complete Scoring Breakdown)
