CLAUDE ENGLISH MENTIONED IN
SPORTS ILLUSTRATED: REPUTED AS ONE OF BEST DUNKERS
PARKVILLE, MO--The recent Most Overrated-Most Underrated issue of
Sports Illustrated features a short article on the NBA's most underrated dunker, Herb White. According to the article, White, a member of the Atlanta Hawks during the 1970 season, captured audiences when, during pre-game warm-ups, he performed various dunks. At just 6-2, the native of Decatur, Ga., was rivaled only by Claude English of the Portland
Trail Blazers. White contends "'that everyone pretty much agreed that Claude English and me were the two best.'" English, the head men's basketball coach at Park University since 1992, agrees that much is accurate. However, the
SI article also refers to an informal dunk contest during lay-up drills before a Blazers-Hawks game that season. In the article, White claims to have won when "Claude [English] conceded."
"That's one version," English says with a smile. "Not the version I remember."
English has been the Director of Athletics at Park for six years.
The article, written by Alexander Wolff, appeared in the August 27 issue of
Sports Illustrated.
