PARK ENDS SEASON WITH
39-POINT OFFENSIVE OUTPUT, FEWEST POINTS IN ELEVEN YEARS
LOUISVILLE, KY--In eleven years, Claude English's basketball teams have
gained a reputation for their defensive consistency; yet, holding Spalding
University (Ky.) (21-12) to just 49 points wasn't good enough to propel
the Pirates (14-16) into the semifinal round of the NAIA Men's
Division I Independent Regional Tournament Friday evening.
Spalding came away with the win, 49-39. Spalding will face #2-seed
Brescia (Ky.) on Saturday. Park's 39-point output marked the lowest
ever by one of English's teams, undercutting the previous low of 40 points
(vs. Southern Nazarene on November 21, 1998) by one point. The
combined 88 points between the two teams also marked a new low since
English took over the Pirates in 1992. The previous combined low of
90 points shared by both teams was set on November 11, 1995, when
Rockhurst edged Park, 46-44. English's teams are 4-2 when holding
opponents under 50 points. Friday's loss to Spalding marked the
conclusion of Park's season. |

2002-2003 Men's Basketball
Preview
YOUTH,
STRONG BACKCOURT CHARACTERIZE O2-03 PIRATES
PARKVILLE,
MO-- In 2002-2003, the Park University men’s basketball program
will be carried on the shoulders of six returning letter winners and ten
newcomers. Youth and strong
backcourt play characterize the coming year’s team, led by senior
guard Kelly Kindall, a four-year starter from Fordland, Mo.
Kindall was the Pirates’ second leading scorer in
2001-2002, averaging 13.1 ppg and 2.7 rpg in one of the strongest guard
trios in the program’s history. Kindall
is the only returner on the team to be awarded NAIA Independent DI
All-Region honors from the squad a year ago that finished 15-12.
Kindall is joined this season by returning seniors Corneal Conn
and Shannon Thomas. Conn
and Thomas played in support roles during the 2001-2002 campaign, each
registering critical minutes as defensive playmakers.
The most significant losses from last season include scoring and
assist leaders Wendell Jones (17.2 ppg) and Marvin Cash (3.9 apg), both
from Memphis, Tenn. A young group of guards, made up of returning sophomores
Chuck Reed and Chip Weber, freshmen Curtis Carr and Renaud Lucas, and
transfers Russell Adell (Allen County) and Anthony Styles (Ellsworth),
will support Kindall and Conn to bolster this year’s back court play.
According to eleventh-year head coach Claude English, the
backcourt of the 2002-2003 remains the strength of the program, while
rebounding and post play will figure significantly into the team’s
success.
In the front court, 6-8 junior Dan Durrer returns along with
Thomas. Alex Santos, a
junior transfer from State Fair, also adds a considerable presence to
the Pirates’ front line. Redshirt
freshman Corey Gupton, transfer Dave Schotten (Mott) and freshman Thomas
Holmes from Leavenworth, Kan., will all play crucial roles in Park’s
interior play.
The Pirates’ mid-range game will be controlled by sophomore
Derek Stanley who is rebounding from last season’s back surgery.
Stanley’s strength, agility and scoring potential are matched
by utility forwards Jason Baugh (Hutchinson) and Lucas Olson-Patterson
(Iowa Lakes). Freshman
Jason Brown from Canyon Lake, Texas, will also compete for minutes at
the forward position.
According to English, the 2002-2003 schedule is the toughest Park
has faced in his tenure. With
just three seniors, Park will open against a much more experienced team
in the Briar Cliff University Chargers who will bring seven seniors to
Saturday’s home opener at 5:30 p.m. in the Breckon Sports Center.
Perennially strong opponents on Park’s schedule include William
Jewell, McKendree, Oklahoma Christian, John Brown, Southern Nazarene,
Rockhurst and Newman; the Pirates face each of these teams twice in the
season ahead.
From last season’s 15-12 output, Park will work to replicate
their 10-3 record at home. Out
of Park’s twelve losses, seven ended within ten points or less.
Park will also work to close the gap on the free throw
differential; in 2001-2002, opponents shot 218 more free throws,
capitalizing on 172 of them.
As one of seven NAIA Independent programs, Park will measure its
postseason opportunity against Athens State (Ala.), Brescia (Kent.),
Central State (Ohio), Spalding (Kent.), Mountain State (W.V.) and
Transylvania (Kent.). In
the preseason coaches poll, Park was picked fourth, three spots behind
top-ranked Mountain State.

2002-2003 Women's Basketball Preview
SENIOR LEADERSHIP, TALENTED NEWCOMERS FUEL
02-03 PIRATES
PARKVILLE, MO--Head coach Joe C. Meriweather will rely on the experience
of five seniors to lead the women’s basketball program into the season
ahead; it will be Meriweather’s sixth season at Park.
In 2001-2002, Park advanced to the NAIA Division I Independent
Region Semifinals, upsetting #4 seed Spalding University (Kent.) along
in the quarterfinals. In
the end, the Pirates finished 14-17, bowing out to eventual National
Tournament qualifier, Central State (Ohio).
It was Park’s best overall season since Judy Vaughn’s 1991-92
squad went 14-14.
Gone
from last season are five letterwinners, most notably Muneerah Williams
(16.5 ppg, 7.7 rpg) and Le’Nae Gilmore (14.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg) who
combined, on average, for 31 points and 12 rebounds per outing.
Senior Glenda Grant, a point guard from Greenville, Miss., is the
most experienced returner on the roster this season.
Grant has led the team in assists each of the last two seasons,
posting 137 last year and 111 in 2000-2001.
She holds the single-game record for assists, dishing out 14
play-making passes against Missouri Baptist College two seasons ago.
Although Grant isn’t surrounded by the same proven scorers, the
experienced frontline support of seniors Jennifer Payne (4.1 rpg),
Agatha Taylor (2.0 ppg, 2.1 rpg) and Katrina Nichols will relieve the
pressure on the ball. The
mid-season addition of Dorothy Haughton, whose proficiency as a slashing
scorer sparked the Pirates last season, will redefine Park’s mid-range
game, bolstering the team on both ends of the court.
Sophomore Miah Ingersoll (2.3
ppg) and freshmen Tangela Rogers and Dione Friends will share time with
Grant and transfer sophomore Courtney Duckworth (Moberly) in Park’s
back court. Small forwards
Priscilla Torto (2.7 ppg, 2.7 rpg) and Jill Stauch, both juniors with
considerable experience in their first two seasons at Park, will
contribute solid minutes, often rotating on challenging defensive
assignments. Highly touted
shooter Crystal Tutschulte, a sophomore guard from Baldwin City, Kan.,
will give this group an offensive lift when she joins the lineup in
January.
Junior center Tenysha Brown
returns as the team’s leading inside scorer.
A volleyball player during the fall season for the last two
years, Brown delivered 7.8 ppg and 3.8 rpg in 2001-2002.
She will be joined in the frontcourt by freshman Megan Anderson
(Oak Park) at semester. Freshmen LaToya Williams and Alysia Geisinger will also
challenge in the post.
Park University’s schedule starts with three home games,
including the Park University Classic, a four-team tournament set for
November 15 and 16. After
that, Park hits the road for ten out of the next twelve games, traveling
for the bulk of their schedule through January 15.
In their home opener, on November 9, Park will match up with the
Concordia University (Neb.) (#13, Div. II) Bulldogs.
Park’s schedule is peppered
with perennially strong programs including #18
Columbia College, which advanced to the NAIA National Tournament in
their first season of intercollegiate competition last year.
Park also squares off against #13 Brescia, MidAmerica Nazarene,
Rockhurst and William Jewell (#20, Div. II) in the upcoming season.
As one of five NAIA Independent programs, Park will compete for a
tournament bid against #13 Brescia (Kent.), #4 Central State (Ohio),
Spalding (Kent.), and Transylvania (Kent.).

S.W.A.G. NAMES AJANAKO BEST VOLLEYBALL PLAYER IN
GHANA FOR 2002
PARKVILLE, MO--The Sportswriters Association of Ghana recently (SWAG)
designated Park University freshman men's volleyball player Seidu Ajanako
as the Best Volleyball Player in Ghana for 2002. The award was
announced earlier this month and will be formally presented to Ajanako in
April or May. A 6-4 outside hitter from Accra, Ghana, Ajanako was
adjudged the Best African Spiker during the Africa Men's Club Championship
in March 2002. According to SWAG vice president Emmanuel Amoako,
Ajanako's performance in the Club Championship largely influenced his
selection for the latest honor. Ghana will play in the All-Africa
Games volleyball eliminations in Cotonou, Benin, from February

2003 Men's Volleyball Preview
STRONG HITTERS, DEPTH HELP PIRATES CONTEND IN
MAMVIC CONFERENCE
PARKVILLE, MO.--The 2002 Park University men’s volleyball season unfolded
with two distinct chapters; through the end of February, the team dug in
with a 2-9
record, starting their conference play in the MAMVIC, 0-8. In March, the
Pirates stormed back with a 10-2 streak that left them above .500 heading
into the conference playoffs. Three seniors—Jason Richards, Osvaldo
Barreras and Nathan Sherman—notably absent from the 2003 roster, led the
charge that guided Park to the NAIA National Championship tournament as
the sixth seed.
This year’s squad is a
refurbished version of the former group. With four upperclassmen among
the seven returning letterwinners from last season, head coach Bertil
Wamelink sees the 2003 team bolting out of the gate with more success in
the early season. The Pirates will find leadership in junior setter
Gustavo Rocha, the team’s leading assist-maker with 1188 (13.1 apg) in
2002. Rocha will join fellow Brazilians Fabricio Teixeira, a senior
outside hitter who missed the 2002 season, and freshman middle hitter
Marco Aurelio, who at 6-7 is expected to control the middle for Park.
Returning starters Skye
Gosewisch, a senior outside hitter from Lee’s Summit, Mo., and Kelvin
Bush, a sophomore outside hitter from Vacaville, Calif., add leadership
and experience to the 2003 team. Gosewisch was named MAMVIC All-Conference
Second Team last season; he led the team with 2.3 digs per game and
average more than three kills per game. Other returners include Aaron
Anderson, who, along with Gosewisch, was named MAMVIC Academic
All-Conference in 2002; outside hitter Mladen Bundalo; libero, Marcello
DeUgarte; and Jeff Petersen, a senior setter from Milwaukee, Wisc.
Newcomers this year
include middle hitters Walker Swan, a 6-7 freshman from Norfolk, Neb., and
Eduardo Collier, a 6-5 freshman from Ottawa, Canada. Freshman outside
hitter Seidu Ajanako, a former player for the Ghana National Team, and
Wilfredo Ponce, a freshman setter from Venezuela, are also new to this
year’s roster.
The Mid-America Men’s
Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) acceded two new members
since last season: the Missouri Valley College Vikings and Peru State
College (Neb.) Bobcats. With the new members, the conference has grown to
eight institutions, and Park remains at their geographic center. Park
will continue to face conference rivals Lindenwood (Mo.), Graceland
(Iowa), William Woods (Mo.) and Missouri Baptist with considerably shorter
road trips. In past years, the program had to travel outside the Midwest
to secure a full schedule, often including as many as two trips to the
Chicago area.
“It’s a growing sport and many schools are taking
notice of men’s volleyball," said head coach Bertil Wamelink. "I get
calls from other school regularly asking about our program [one of the
oldest intercollegiate men’s volleyball programs among NAIA member
institutions] and inquiring about startup."
Park will scrimmage the Pirate Alumni team on Friday, January 17, at 7:00
p.m., before heading to Quincy, Ill., for the season opener on Sunday,
January 19, at 1:00 p.m. The Pirates play their first home match of the
regular season on Tuesday, February 18, against Newman University at 7:00
p.m.
