2003-2004 Men's Basketball Preview
FORCED TEMPO, GUARD PLAY CHARACTERIZE 03-04
PIRATES
PARKVILLE, MO--In the upcoming season, head coach Claude English will rely
on stellar guard play continuing from late last year when the Pirates
handled College of the Ozarks and Oklahoma City University in late
February, extending their home record to 12-2 during 2002-2003. Returning
junior guards Chuck Reed (All-Independent Region, 9.6 ppg, 43.5 3FG %) and
Chip Weber (All-Independent Region, 8.9 ppg, 2 apg) along with Bill
Winston, who returns for his senior season with the Pirates, anchor a
guard-loaded team, aiming to challenge the elites in NAIA Division I men's
basketball.
Returning senior post players Dan Durrer (6.2 ppg, 4.8
rpg) and Alex Santos (5.1 ppg, 5.0 rpg, All-America Scholar-Athlete) will
secure the paint for the Pirates. They're joined by returning
letterwinners Corey Gupton and Thomas Holmes. Small forward
Derek Stanley (6.1 ppg, 5.4 rpg) was sidelined with an injury after just
eight games last season. He returns to the squad this season and is joined
by his younger brother, Damien Stanley, who will suit up for Park
beginning in January.
Departed from last year's 14-16 squad are Kelly Kindall
and Shannon Thomas. Kindall sparked the Pirates last season with a
team-leading 15.6 ppg; he was honored as a First Team All-Independent
Region selection. Thomas, at 6-9, contributed a team-best 42 blocked shots
last season. He was the leading rebounder in eight games last year,
grabbing a season-high of 11 against John Brown University.
In 2003-2004, Park's schedule is stacked with perennial
elites, including William Jewell College, Oklahoma Christian University,
Rockhurst University, Missouri Western State College, and Southern
Nazarene. Park also plays two teams who competed in the NAIA Fab Four
National Semifinals last year: Mountain State University and McKendree
College.
New student-athletes in the program this year, include
freshman Antoin Burton, sophomore Chris Gaston, and senior Russell Adell.
Burton and Gaston are strong on both ends of the court; they will add
depth and versatility to an already deep guard core. Adell is a big guard;
at 6-3, his strength will present challenges to opponents in the year
ahead. Forwards Ryan Meissner, Mitch Black, Darwin Joseph, Paris Katsimpas
and Frank Baptiste round out the roster, providing English with greater
depth than the program has enjoyed in recent seasons.
"We have a lot of different kinds of players this
year," said English. "Our guard play continues to be the trademark of the
team, but we also have very solid interior players who can defend, rebound
effectively, and score it. This is one of the toughest schedules we've
faced since I've been at Park."
On Saturday, November 1, Park will open the 2003-2004 season
against the Bellevue University Bruins (0-0) from Omaha, Neb. Coached by
Todd Eisner, the Bruins have finished the season in the top ten nationally
for scoring defense in NAIA Men's Division II. Tip-off in the Breckon
Sports Center is at 2:00 p.m. |

KRISTIN GILMORE BUZZER-BEATER SINKS #8 BRESCIA;
PARK WINS, 48-46
PARKVILLE, MO--Brescia University (20-5) and Park University (18-3)
scrapped for forty minutes Saturday afternoon. The two programs
were vying for the lead in the NAIA Independent Region; before Saturday,
Brescia was the clear favorite, entering the contest as the #8 team in
NAIA Women's Division I basketball.
Brescia controlled the game early, taking a six point
lead into the locker room at halftime and outrebounding Park 20-14 in
the game's first twenty minutes. Park led
only
briefly in the opening period, at 15-14 after a Michelle Dean free
throw. The lead lasted seven seconds before Brescia's Lauren
Simmons hit a three-pointer to restore the advantage to her Bearcats.
In the second half, Park continued to trail while
gradually regaining the rebounding edge. With 1:04 remaining,
junior forward Randi Meissner sank a pair of free throws to knot the
score at 46-46. This came after Park fought back from a 46-41
deficit with six minutes left in the game. With the scored tied,
Park regained possession on a loose ball out of bounds following a
missed one-and-one opportunity by Brescia with 12 seconds left. As
a team, the Bearcats ended the night 4-for-13 (30.8%), only slightly
better than Park's dire effort from the floor: 13-of-59 (22.0%).
With time winding down, Gilmore took a baseline jumper
which sat on the rim before sealing the win with no time remaining.
It was Park's seventh win in a row. Park outrebounded the
Bearcats, 52-39, following a plus-19 rebounding effort in the second
half.
Sophomore forward LaTasha Johnson led Park with 11
points; Meissner hauled in 17 rebounds. Brescia's Jennifer Flener
had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead her team. Park hosts

2003-2004 Women's Basketball Preview
SUCCESSFUL NOVEMBER CRITICAL TO
03-04 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM
PARKVILLE, MO--Head
coach Joe C. Meriweather, entering his seventh season at Park
University, has brought in seven new student-athletes to bolster his
lineup of six returners for the season ahead. Key signees will add both
size and experience to a core of returners. Junior Randi Johnson will
contribute at the forward position, following two seasons at Penn Valley
Community College. A 2001 graduate of Washington High School in Kansas
City, Kan., the 6-0 forward will shore up the Pirates' front line along
with LaTasha Johnson, Randi Meissner and returning seniors Priscilla
Torto (NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete, 4.9 ppg, 4.3 rpg) and Tenysha
Brown (10.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg).
LaTasha
Johnson,
a 6-1 forward from Seminole Community College, will join the Pirates in
January. She was distinguished as FCCAA Mid-Florida Conference Freshman
of the Year last season, contributing 10.6 ppg and 6.9 rpg. A 2002
graduate of Cypress Creek High School, Johnson averaged 19.1 ppg during
her senior year, while being honored on the Florida All-State Third Team
and the All-Orlando County Team. Meissner, a 6-1 junior forward from
Plymouth, Minn., will also add size and strength to Park's interior play
this season.
In the backcourt, returning letterwinners Tangela
Rogers and Miah Ingersoll are rejoined by Kristin Gilmore who comes back
to the lineup for her senior season. In 2001-2002, Gilmore was the
team's second leading scorer, producing 14.4 ppg on average. She also
had 102 assists that season. Newcomers Markesha Addison, Michelle Dean,
Kieasha Bell, Crystal Tutschulte and Christy Roten will also contribute
at the guard positions.
Gone from the 2002-2003 roster are seniors Glenda Grant
(4.7 ppg, 3.4 apg) and Dorothy Haughton (15.9 ppg, 6.4 rpg). Haughton
was the team's leading scorer last season; she posted a season-high 28
points against Benedictine and 12 rebounds against Philander Smith and
Missouri Valley College.
The early stretch of the 2003-2004 schedule is critical
as Park challenges Langston University on the road before coming back to
Parkville for the season home opener against Avila University at 7:00
p.m. on November 11. In recent seasons, Park has gotten off to a slow
start; the program is 3-21 in the month of November over the past three
years. This year, with a loaded front line and improved backcourt play,
Meriweather and the Pirates will go after a strong start as the
precursor to a strong season.

DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPS START SECOND QUEST
FRIDAY
PARKVILLE, MO--Park University, the 2003 NAIA National Invitational
Tournament defending champions, take the court on Friday, January 23,
kicking off their title defense in St. Charles, Mo., at the Lindenwood
University Tournament. The Pirates won four matches in the tournament last
season, extending their early season win streak to eight matches before
suffering their first loss of the year. Seven letterwinners return in 2004
for first year head coach Lorenzo Barrientez, Jr. Barrientez replaces his
mentor, Bertil Wamelink, who, along with four starters from last year's
squad, ended their stay at Park as part of the best team in the nation
with a record of 28-5.
Barrientez will turn to senior setter Gustavo Rocha and
sophomore middle hitter Marco Rabello for dependability and leadership
early this year. Rocha and Rabello were consistent starters during last
year's campaign. Over three years, Rocha has led the team in assists every
season, accumulating 3,529 assists in that span. As the only senior on the
roster this year, Rocha will play a central role on the team. Rabello
played in a team-high 104 games last season; he posted 246 kills,
averaging 2.4 per game, while leading the team in blocks with 128 in his
first year at Park. Returners Mladen Bundalo, Kelvin Bush, Marcello de
Ugarte, Wilfredo Ponce and Walker Swan all made stellar contributions in
limited action last year. With four starting positions, this group of
underclassmen will challenge for hard-earned shares of court time.
This year's schedule features home and away series with
perennial MidAmerica Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC)
rivals: Lindenwood, Missouri Valley, Newman, Peru State, Graceland, and
Missouri Baptist. Park will also face a provisional member of the
conference, Avila University. The Pirates play in three regular season
tournaments, including the St. Ambrose University Tournament and the
eight-team Park University Classic on March 19-20.
According to Barrientez, five newcomers will make an
immediate impact for Park, which starts the season ranked #5 nationally in
the Tachikara/NAIA Preseason Poll. Cristian Maciel, a 6-5 freshman from
Sao Paulo, Brazil; Jonathan Nino, a 6-1 freshman from Dallas, Texas; and
Alton Glen Rolle, a 6-0 freshman from Nassau, Bahamas, are outside hitters
new to the team. Middle hitter Simon Golola (6-3; Kampala, Uganda) and
defensive specialist Daniel Joens (5-10, Overland Park, Kan.) round out
the freshman class for the program.
Following an exhibition alumni scrimmage on Friday
evening at 7:00 p.m., the Pirates will take the court for their season
opener in the Lindenwood University Tournament on Friday, January 23,
against Kendall College at 4:00 p.m.
