PARK HEAD MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH CLAUDE ENGLISH TO RETIRE FROM COACHING
PARKVILLE, MO--After 13 standout seasons, Park University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Claude English is set to retire from coaching at the conclusion of the 2004-05 season. English, who has served as Park’s Director of Athletics since January 1996, will continue to serve in his role as the school’s A.D. following the season.
The winningest coach in Park men’s basketball history with a record of 180-205, English’s coaching tenure was highlighted by the Pirates’ run to the NAIA Final Four in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsmanship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team recognized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney.
This season, English’s Pirates have posted a 10-16 record, including wins over No. 2 William Jewell College, No. 10 McKendree College and No. 19 College of the Ozarks. He will coach his final game Saturday, March 5, against Brescia University at the Breckon Sports Center starting at 2 p.m.
“I think anytime you have been coaching for 25 years at the collegiate level and that time comes to an end, it’s going to be an adjustment,” English said. “The thing I am going to miss the most is the practice sessions and daily interaction with the players. Watching these players arrive on campus as 18-year-old freshmen and leave as 22-year-old grown men is something that I will sorely miss.”
During English’s guidance as athletic director, Park University athletics has undergone drastic improvements. Women’s golf and men’s baseball have been added as intercollegiate sports since his appointment to A.D. In addition, English has overseen numerous facility improvements, such as Park soccer’s 1,500-seat Julian Field and the construction of the Breckon Sports Center.
“Over the years, the athletic director’s responsibilities at Park University have increased dramatically,” English said. “We’ve added two sports in these nine years and our staff has doubled. With that growth, it has become a challenge to try and do both jobs. If we are going to continue to grow as a department, I need be able to devote more energy to improving Park athletics.”
After playing basketball for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the University of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 season. English also played in the Eastern Basketball Association for the Hartford Capitals, the affiliate team for the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the Eastern Basketball Association Championship with the Capitals. He was a three-year captain at Hartford.
He joined the coaching staff at the University of Rhode Island in 1972 where he remained for 12 years, including four seasons as the head coach from 1981-84. English was named Coach of the Year in the Atlantic 10 Conference in 1981.
Overall, he owns a 225-274 career record in 17 seasons as a head coach.
“Claude English is a well respected basketball coach who has been nationally recognized for challenging his players to act as ‘Champions of Character,’ on and off the basketball court,” said Park University President Dr. Beverley Byers-Pevitts. “For the past several years, he has effectively juggled dual responsibilities as the head men’s basketball coach and the athletic director for the University. Under his leadership, Park’s athletic programs have significantly expanded to represent 15 teams and nearly 200 student-athletes. Due to this significant growth, Coach English recently made the decision to concentrate his energy and vision on the athletic director’s position.
“We are grateful for the exemplary role he has demonstrated during his coaching years, and we are delighted that he will continue as athletic director to oversee and advance our outstanding athletic programs,” added Dr. Byers-Pevitts.
English will head a national search committee to fill the basketball coaching vacancy at Park, beginning immediately.

Testimonials From Former and Current Players

Anteco Cross (1993-95, Memphis, Tenn., B.A. Business Administration, 1995)

“Coach English was a patient teacher and a role model for me. The principles in life that he taught me, I still apply to my life everyday. He is like a father figure for me and it was just a blessing that he gave me the opportunity to play for him.”

Derek Stanley (Senior, Forward, Morrisville, Mo., B.A. Business Administration, 2004)
“When I first came here, I was from a small town and hadn’t experienced the real world. Coach taught me to be independent and to be a stronger player and person. He is somebody you can always talk to. If you have a problem in basketball or in life, he will find a way to help you if he can. He also stuck with me through some tough times when I was injured and kept me going and helped me stay positive. Coach is someone I will always stay in touch with. It has been a great experience playing for him and I wouldn’t have wanted to go anywhere else.”

Men's Basketball Season Preview
PARK MEN'S BASKETBALL OPENS SEASON THIS WEEKEND
PARKVILLE, MO. – The 2004-05 Park University men’s basketball team is ready to take on the challenge of improving upon a 10-20 record from a year ago.
Head Coach Claude English, who enters his 13th season at Park, returns seven players and three starters, as well as a group of 10 newcomers to his squad.
“With five incoming freshmen and five junior college transfers, it’s challenging to say the least,” English said.  “But it is also a great opportunity for our team to come together and be successful.”
A trio of senior starters will be looked upon to be a stabilizing force for the Pirates, starting with senior guard Chuck Reed.  Reed, a native of Inkster, Mich., led Park with 11.4 points per game as a junior en route to being named a second-team all-independent region selection.
Fellow seniors Derek and Damien Stanley, both of Morrisville, Mo., also return after starting 15 and 11 games, respectively, last season.  Derek Stanley is Park’s top returning rebounder from a year ago, averaging 4.92 rebounds per game, along with 7.13 points per contest.  Damien Stanley was the Pirates’ third leading scorer in 2003-04, averaging 9.65 points per game, including hitting 38.1 percent from beyond the three-point line.
“Chuck, Damien and Derek will provide us with a nucleus that is much needed,” English said.  “I’ll be looking for those three, along with fellow senior Anthony Styles, Jr., to provide leadership on and off the floor.”
Styles (Pontiac, Mich.), junior Chris Gatson (Houston, Texas), sophomore Mitchell Black (Platte City, Mo.) and sophomore Frank Baptiste (St. Lucia) round out Park’s returning players.  Not included in among the returning class is Park’s top-rebounder from a year ago, Corey Gupton, who suffered a season-ending injury in preseason practice.
Former Penn Valley Community College standouts junior Edward Wilson (Kansas City, Mo.) and junior Marcus Simms (Kansas City, Mo.) are both expected to make immediate impacts as newcomers.  Wilson, a former junior college All-American at Penn Valley, is expected to contribute at both the guard and forward positions, while Simms will handle a majority of the point guard duties, according to English.
Other newcomers expected to contribute in their first seasons are junior Donovan Thompson (North Central Missouri College), freshman Admir Aljic (Tuzla, Bosnia) and freshman Donovan Williams (Columbus, Ga.).
Park, which plays nearly half its games against teams that qualified for either the NAIA Division I or II national tournaments a year ago, opens its season this weekend at the Morningside College Classic.  The Pirates home opener is set for Monday, Nov. 8, against Benedictine College at 7 p.m.

Women's Basketball Season Preview
PARK WOMEN'S BASKETBALL OPENS SEASON THIS WEEK
PARKVILLE, MO. – Coming off a school record 22 wins and three losses last season, the 2004-05 Park University women’s basketball team has high expectations heading into its new campaign.
Head Coach Joe C. Meriweather will welcome 11 new faces to his squad heading into the year, but returns a core of five players with starting experience from last season’s record setting squad.
Leading the pack is senior forward Randi Johnson (Kansas City, Kan.), who averaged 12.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game in 2003-04.  Michelle Dean (Kansas City, Kan.) is Park’s only other senior and returns after averaging 2.76 points per game and starting three contests at the guard position.
“Randi and Michelle have been showing great leadership skills for us this fall by setting a solid example in practice,” said Meriweather, who enters his eighth season at Park.  “Senior leadership will be key for us, especially with as many newcomers as we have.”
Junior LaTasha Johnson (Miami, Fla.), junior Tangela Rogers (Orlando, Fla.) and sophomore Kieasha Bell (Flint, Mich.) all three also return after seeing time in the starting lineup last season.  Johnson averaged 9.27 points and 5.2 rebounds per game at forward, while Rogers posted numbers of 3.6 points and 2.2 rebounds per contest at guard.  Bell, who started three games last season, averaged 2.4 points per game.
In all, six freshman and five transfers will be looked upon to play significant roles in their first season with the Pirates.
Highlighting the class is junior Katie Cummings, who comes to Park from NCAA Division I Wichita State University after playing in 18 games as a freshman and seven games as a sophomore with the Shockers.  Cummings, a 6-3, forward from St. Joseph, Mo., is a projected starter at the post position.
Junior college transfer Tiffany Alexander (Detroit, Mich.) will provide Park with a true point guard.  Alexander, a 5-7, junior, averaged five assists per game last season at Fort Scott Community College.
“I think this season will be one where we will work very hard and work together as a team,” Meriweather said.  “That is what worked for us last year and if we do that again this year, we will be alright.”
Park opens with six of its first seven games on the road, including the season opener Wednesday at Missouri Valley College and a match-up at 16th-ranked Oklahoma Baptist University on Friday.  The Pirates’ home opener is set for Monday, Nov. 8, against Langston University at the Breckon Sports Center starting at 5 p.m.

PIRATE MEN'S VOLLEYBALL ENTERS SEASON RANKED FOURTH

PARKVILLE, MO. – After advancing to the semifinals of the NAIA National Invitational Tournament last season, the Park University men’s volleyball team enters its 2005 campaign ranked fourth in the country in the NAIA Preseason Top 10 Coaches’ Poll.
The Pirates, who posted a 21-8 record in 2004, will be led this season by first-year Head Coach Cory Frederick.  Frederick came to Park last summer after spending three seasons as an assistant women’s volleyball coach at Missouri Western State College.

Frederick will have six letterwinners returning to the Pirates in 2005, led by junior Marco Rabello (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and sophomore Cristian Maciel (Sao Paulo, Brazil).  Maciel led Park offensively last season, averaging 3.97 kills per game, to go along with 1.72 digs per game.  Rabello ranked second on the squad in kills with 3.24 per game, as well as averaging 1.78 digs and 0.98 blocks per game.
     Junior Walker Swan (
Norfolk, Neb.) and sophomore Simon Golola (Kampala, Uganda) also return to man the middle hitter position.  Swan averaged 1.19 blocks and 1.86 kills per game, while Golola posted numbers of 2.55 kills and 0.79 blocks per game last season.
Rounding out Park returning letterwinners are senior Wilfredo Ponce (Valencia, Venezuela) and sophomore Daniel Joens (Overland Park, Kan.).
Leading the class of six newcomers to the program is freshman Ryan Stafford (San Ramon, Calif.), who had a team-high 20 kills in Park’s exhibition match against its alumni on Jan. 14.  The current Pirates won the match, 3-1.
“After seeing our match against the alumni, it is apparent that we have a lot of talent on this team,”
Frederick said.  “I’m excited to see how they develop over the next few weeks as we enter our regular season matches.
“There is a lot of room for improvement and growth as a team, but that is a challenge we are all willing to accept,”
Frederick added.  “Once we reach our full potential, we will be a team to look out for.  The talent is in place, now we just have to put it together as one team.”
Park will open its 2005 season on Tuesday when it travels to Peru, Neb., to take on Peru State College starting at
7 p.m.  The Pirates’ open their home schedule Wednesday, Feb. 2, against Graceland University starting at 7 p.m.
