Description of scoring system
Townsend Trophy
Park University – William Jewell College
Purpose: To invigorate the spirit of character and image through competition,
enhancing the vibrant rivalry between two upstanding, liberal arts institutions
in Kansas City's Northland: Park University and William Jewell College. Each
school's intercollegiate sports teams will be assigned points corresponding to a
system. Three points are available in each sport in which the schools compete
during an academic year: women's soccer, men's soccer, women's volleyball, men's
basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country, baseball, softball,
indoor and outdoor men's track, indoor and outdoor women's track and women's golf. One bonus point will be awarded
for the winner of postseason matchups in sports competing head-to-head; one-half
bonus point will be awarded for the winner of postseason matchups in sports
competing as individuals or teams among a field of institutions.
Point system
Three points will be divided by the number of regular season matchups in an
eligible sport. For example, if William Jewell and Park split in men's
basketball, William Jewell earns +1.5 and Park earns +1.5.
One bonus point will be awarded for head-to-head post-season matchups. If, for
example, Park defeated William Jewell in women's soccer during the regular
season, Park would earn +3. If the two teams met at the NAIA National
Championship Tournament and William Jewell defeated Park, William Jewell would
earn a post-season bonus of +1.
Ties: If William Jewell and Park tie in any event, the points for that event
will be divided evenly between the two schools. If Park and William Jewell tie
in men's soccer, for example, Park would earn +1.5 point and William Jewell
would earn +1.5 point. Post-season bonuses are only applied if both Park and
William Jewell compete in the championship event.
Tiebreaker
If the schools are tied at the end of the season, the following tie-breaker will
be applied: the cumulative GPA of all varsity student-athletes on rosters of
eligible sports for the year in question will be calculated on a flat 4.00 scale
(with no consideration of honors enrollments). The program with the higher
cumulative GPA according to this standard will be awarded the Townsend Trophy.
Specific notes for eligible sports
Soccer
Three points are available for the winner of head-to-head regular season
competition. If the match ends in a tie, the points are divided equally. If
the teams meet in the post-season, each postseason matchup is valued at one
point.
Basketball, Volleyball, Baseball, Softball
Three points are available for the winner of head-to-head regular season
competition. If teams play twice, each game is valued at 1.5 points. If teams
meet three times, each game is valued at one point. If teams meet in the
post-season, each postseason matchup is valued at one point. For baseball and
softball, events ending in a tie will result in the equal allocation of the
points available for that contest.
Indoor and Outdoor Track, Cross Country and Women's Golf
Three points are available for each regular season, provided William Jewell and
Park meet at least once during the season at a "team scored" event. If a school
sponsors an individual to an event but does not compete as a team, while the
other school competes as a team, the school competing as a team will be awarded
the points for that event. If both schools compete only with individuals, the
event will not be counted for the Townsend Trophy. Post-season meetings between
the schools, provided at least one school is scored as a team, will be counted
as +.5 bonus points.
