HASTINGS BRONCOS
RUMBLE INTO JULIAN FIELD OVER LABOR DAY WEEKEND
PARKVILLE,
MO--Park University's men's and women's soccer programs open the
regular season Sunday afternoon against the Hastings College
Broncos. The women's match between Park and Hastings kicks off at
1:00 p.m.; the men's match follows at 3:00 p.m.
On the
women's side, both teams enter the match with even records at 0-0-0.
Last season was the first time in Park's fourteen-year history of women's
soccer that the two teams met; the Pirates defeated Hastings 5-0 on the
road. Forward Pam Bedzrah led Park's charge in the match with three
goals. Jennifer Greco and Tunde Nemeth also scored for Park; Greco
added three assists. Park University women's soccer is ranked #11
nationally entering Sunday's season-opener.
Hastings' men
are currently ranked #14 in the nation with a 2-0-0 record. The
Broncos have played two home matches, notching wins against #17 University
of Mary, 3-1, and Region IV rival Bellevue University, 2-1. Hastings
College is the defending Region IV champion. In the first-ever
meeting between the two programs, Park traveled to Hastings and defeated
the Broncos 2-1 early in the 2001 season.
Sunday is
also Kansas City Wizards Day at
Park University. The Wizards plan to have the Super Kick set up and
mascot Dynamo on hand for family entertainment. The special event is
being organized with support from Park alumnus Raul Cobos ('95) who is an
account executive for youth soccer with the Wizards.

PROGRAMS STRIDE INTO REGION IV
2002 Women's Cross Country Preview
PARKVILLE,
MO--Junior Crystal Bethel and senior Jessica Ferguson, both from Nassau, Bahamas, will blaze trails for the women's cross country program this fall as two of the four returning
runners from last season. Junior Kristin Wolfe from Casselberry, Florida, and Kasey Scott, a sophomore from Stockton, Mo., complete the class of returning letterwinners for the program.
Last season,
Park finished fourth in the NAIA Region V meet on November 3. Ferguson led
the team that day with a fifth place finish on the 3,000-meter course in a
time of 19 minutes, 10.43 seconds. Head coach Brian Renshaw described the
team's regional performance as their best event of the season. In 2002,
Park will compete in NAIA Region IV and the MCAC conference. -more-
2002 Men's Cross Country Preview
All-American junior Mabior Atem will head the pack during the 2002 men's cross country season. Atem, junior Jake Kidd and senior Robert Pavlovic are the three returners from last year's team which finished sixth in NAIA Region V. Atem finished fourth in the regional meet, completing the 8,000-meter run in 25 minutes, 49.09 seconds. In 2001, Atem was the lone representative of the men's program at the NAIA National Championship Meet; he finished the race in 27th place with a time of 25 minutes, 58 seconds, designating him as an All-American.
