STRONG HITTERS, DEPTH HELP PIRATES CONTEND IN MAMVIC
CONFERENCE
PARKVILLE, MO.--The 2002 Park University men’s volleyball season unfolded with
two distinct chapters; through the end of February, the team dug in with a 2-9
record, starting their conference play in the MAMVIC, 0-8. In March, the
Pirates stormed back with a 10-2 streak that left them above .500 heading into
the conference playoffs. Three seniors—Jason Richards, Osvaldo Barreras and
Nathan Sherman—notably absent from the 2003 roster, led the charge that guided
Park to the NAIA National Championship tournament as the sixth seed.
This year’s squad is a refurbished version of the former group. With
four upperclassmen among the seven returning letterwinners from last season,
head coach Bertil Wamelink sees the 2003 team bolting out of the gate with more
success in the early season. | MORE
