NAIA Champions of Character Initiative
HARVESTERS FOOD DRIVE, KPRS HOT 103.3 JAMZ LIVE REMOTE
AMONG ACTIVITIES SLOTTED FOR FEBRUARY 15 BASKETBALL GAME
PARKVILLE, MO--On February 15, 2003, the Park University men's basketball team
hosts the Morningside College Mustangs for a 2:00 p.m. contest in the Breckon
Sports Center on the Parkville campus. Park University Athletics is
sponsoring a Harvesters food drive in conjunction with the event. Canned
goods or other non-perishable food items will be accepted at the gate for
admission; all goods will then be donated to the Kansas City-based Harvesters
charity. Canned goods may be purchased at the gate for the price of
regular adult admission--$3.00. All proceeds will be donated to
Harvesters. No free passes will be granted that day to ensure a hearty
collection for Harvesters, a group committed to combating hunger in Kansas City
and the surrounding communities.
In coordination with University Advancement, KPRS Hot
103 Jamz will be airing a live radio remote for one hour before the game.
At halftime, area youth basketball players will scrimmage. For more information

Men's Volleyball Results
PIRATES DEFEAT MO. VALLEY FOR FIRST MAMVIC WIN
MARSHALL, MO.--Park University (2-0, 1-0) inducted the Missouri Valley College
Vikings (0-1, 0-1) to the MAMVIC Conference Tuesday night,
 defeating
the first-year team, 3-1 (30-25, 30-21, 25-30, 30-24). Park improved to 2-0
with 21 kills from freshman outside hitter Seidu Ajanako. Setter Gustavo Rocha
distributed 48 assists and made 11 digs in the match. Marco Aurelio recorded
three service aces against the Vikings. Park travels to the Quad Cities this
weekend for a 5:00 p.m. match on Saturday against Trinity International followed
by a 1:00 p.m. match on Sunday against Saint Ambrose. Both games will be played
in Davenport, Iowa, at St. Ambrose University. |

Men's Basketball Results
PARK'S DEFENSE GROUNDS NCAA II ROCKHURST HAWKS
PARKVILLE, MO--Park University (9-11) locked up the Rockhurst University (10-8)
Tuesday night, holding the Hawks to just 60 points on 22-of-51 (43.1%) shooting
for the game. Park came away with the 67-60 win. Rockhurst's final points of
the night came at the 4:58 mark on a layup by freshman Cory Schulte, which gave
Rockhurst a 60-56 edge. After that, Park's defense took hold, shutting out the
Hawks as the Pirates went on a 9-0 run. Senior guard Kelly Kindall
scored eight of his team's points in the final five minutes; he finished with 22
points to lead all players. Senior forward Shannon Thomas ended the night with
a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds, including a pair of dunks mid-way
through the second half. Chip Weber also had 15 points for the Pirates.
Rockhurst's Joel Sobanski led his team with 17 points. Park hosts Union (Neb.)
Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.; the Pirates travel to Rockhurst next Wednesday,
January 29, for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. |

HAWKS USE HOME COURT TO TOP PIRATES
KANSAS CITY, MO.--Park University (4-15) kept it close, trailing by just two
points at halftime ,
35-33, but the Rockhurst University Hawks pulled away in the second half for the
victory, 76-66. Dorothy Haughton led Park with 23 points and six rebounds.
Megan Anderson had 16 points; Tenysha Brown scored 12 points and grabbed nine
rebounds. Park plays at Central Methodist College (Mo.) on Thursday night at
7:00 p.m. |

PARK UNIVERSITY'S ONGAO NAMED NAIA PLAYER OF THE YEAR
AT NSCAA COACHES CONVENTION

PARKVILLE, MO--Eric Ongao, a 6-4 sophomore defender from Nairobi, Kenya, has
been awarded the NAIA National Player of the Year for 2002. The honor was
announced at the NSCAA Convention in Kansas City on Saturday. Ongao was the
tallest player on the 2002 Park University men's soccer team, which went 21-2-2,
recording the best-ever season in school history and advancing to the NAIA
National Championship Finals. Regarded as one of the finest attacking defenders
in the nation; he finished the 2002 season with twenty points on eight goals and
four assists. A computer science major, Ongao scored four game-winning goals for
the Pirates, including tournament game-winners against Rio Grande (Ohio) and
Lindsey Wilson (Ky.). During the season, Ongao was distinguished as the MCAC
Player of the Week twice and the NAIA Region IV Player of the Week once. In the
post-season, he was recognized as MCAC All-Conference, NAIA All-Region IV, NAIA
Region IV Defensive Player of the Year, and NAIA First Team All-American. Second
year head coach Efrem Shimlis regards Ongao as "a quiet, smart defender who
leads by example."
"He reads and responds to the opposing team and his own teammates as well as
any player I have ever seen," said Shimlis.
The Player of the Year honor is the highest award given for men's soccer in
the NAIA; Ongao is the first-ever student-athlete at Park to win the award.

Men's Volleyball Results
PARK PREVAILS IN SEASON OPENER VERSUS QUINCY
QUINCY, ILL.--Park University (1-0) opened the 2003 season Sunday afternoon with
a 3-0 win against NCAA II Quincy
 University
(0-2). Game scores were 30-28, 30-26, and 31-29. Seidu Ajanako led Park with 22
kills and eight digs. Fabricio Teixeira posted 13 kills with a match-leading
.478 attack percentage. Setter Gustavo Rocha distributed 45 assists with 10
digs; Skye Gosewisch finished with 11 kills. For Quincy, Daniel Runba led the
team with 10 kills. Park travels to Marshall, Mo., to face Missouri Valley
College on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. This is the first season of men's
volleyball for Missouri Valley. |

MUSTANGS TAKE TWENTY-POINT HALFTIME EDGE, PROTECT IT
FOR 84-62 WIN OVER PARK 
PARKVILLE, MO--Up 51-31 at halftime, the Morningside College Mustangs (12-11)
held fast to their lead throughout the second half, eventually defeating Park
University (4-14), 84-62, in the Breckon Sports Center Saturday afternoon.
Dorothy Haughton had 13 points and six rebounds to lead Park. Megan Anderson
and Tenysha Brown each scored ten points for the Pirates. Park travels to
Rockhurst University for a 7:00 p.m. game on Tuesday night.

PIRATES SUCCUMB TO LADY LIONS' PRESSURE WITH FORTY
TURNOVERS
PARKVILLE, MO--Langston University (10-6) enjoyed 35 points off of turnovers and
scored
 21
points at the free throw line as the Lady Lions defeated Park University (4-13),
68-48, just twenty-four hours after Park's record-setting win against
Harris-Stowe State. Langston's full court zone pressure and half court traps
disrupted Park's offense; Park shot just 19-of-61 (31%) from the floor. Dorothy
Haughton led all scorers with 21 points. Tenysha Brown had ten points, nine
rebounds and eight blocked shots. For Langston, leading scorer Cynthia Hogg
dominated the post with 20 points and seven rebounds. Park hosts Morningside
College Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
