NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes

THREE NAIA ALL-AMERICA SCHOLAR ATHLETES REPRESENT BASKETBALL PROGRAMSPriscilla Torto
PARKVILLE, MO--Park University women's basketball players Jill Stauch and Priscilla Torto have been recognized as All-America Scholar-Athletes for the 2002-2003 season by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.  Stauch, a 5-8 junior forward from Tonganoxie, Kan., averaged 4.0 ppg and 2.7 rpg for the season.  Torto, a 5-10 junior forward from Harare, Zimbabwe, averaged 4.6 ppg, 4.1 rpg and 1.9 spg for the season.  Both are studying computer science at Park.
    From the men's basketball team, junior Alex Santos, a 6-7 forward from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, started in more than half of the team's 30 games this season while contributing 5.1 points and 5.0 rebounds on average.  Santos is studying Business Administration.
     NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes must be in their junior year with a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or above.

FAGAN, FAULCONER HOMER IN SWEEP OF HASKELL Park UniversityHaskell Indian Nations University (Kan.)
LAWRENCE, KAN--Juniors LaJeana Fagan and Sherry Faulconer each delivered a homerun in the second game of Park's sweep of Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kan., Tuesday afternoon.  Fagan's two-run shot came in the first inning; Faulconer hit a three-run homerun in the top of the sixth inning.  Park won the game, 10-0. Faulconer also picked up the pitching win for Park (15-13, 10-2) in the opener--a 6-3 victory for Park.

ANDY MORGAN HITS FOR CYCLE AS PARK HAMMERS PERU STATEAndy Morgan
PERU, NEB--Junior Andy Morgan, an infielder from Manhattan, Kan., Peru State College (Neb.)
Park Universitywent 4-for-5 in the opener of Tuesday afternoon's doubleheader against the Peru State College Bobcats (19-23, 5-13), .  Morgan delivered three runs and three RBI has he hit for the cycle, notching a single, a double, a triple and a homerun.  Park University (23-12, 12-4) won the game, 12-1, behind the pitching of senior Jarrod Tyson who surrendered just one run on a homerun by Peru State junior Joe Tynon in the bottom of the first inning.  Stephen Kent was 2-for-2 with three runs in the game; Ruben Vieyra went 3-for-4 with an RBI.  In the second game, Park's Joe Barbosa blasted his second homerun of the afternoon and his seventh of the season to finish 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.  Senior Ryan Kiedrowski was 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI.  Kent (2-4, 2RBI, HR), Morgan (3 R), R.J. Nab (2-4) and Ben Weber (2-4) also had solid outings for Park.  In the second game, Park enjoyed defensive magic, relying on just one assist during the game.  The Pirates host Newman University for 1:00 p.m. doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.  The games are the final regular season events for the baseball program.

PARK UNIVERSITY ENTERS NATIONAL TOURNAMENT AS TOP SEED
PARKVILLE, MO--The NAIA men's volleyball advisory committee is pleased to announce the participants of the 2003 Tachikara/NAIA National Invitational Tournament, to be held at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, April 25-26.  Four teams received an automatic bid into the tournament:
1. California Baptist University - West Coast region Champion
2. Cardinal Stritch University (Wisc.) - CCVA Champion
3. Park University (Mo.) - MAMVIC Champion
4. St. Ambrose University (Iowa) - host institution
Two at large bids were awarded Lindenwood University (Mo.) and Missouri Baptist University. The seeding for the tournament is: #1. Park University (Mo.), #2. California Baptist University, #3. Missouri Baptist University, #4. Lindenwood University (Mo.), #5. Cardinal Stritch University (Wisc.), #6. St. Ambrose University (Iowa).

Men's Volleyball/MAMVIC Honors
SEASON HONORS ACCUMULATE FOR AJANAKO, MAMVIC-CHAMPION PIRATESSeidu Ajanako, 2003 MAMVIC Most Valuable Player
PARKVILLE, MO--Park University freshman Seidu Ajanako was awarded the Most Valuable Player of the MAMVIC Conference for 2003 following the conference tournament in St. Charles, Mo., this weekend.  An outside hitter from Accra, Ghana, Ajanako led the conference in kills, tallying 211 kills in 43 games (4.9 k/g).  He was also distinguished as the Freshman of the Year in the conference.  Other award recipients from Park University were

ATCHISON, KS--Benedictine College validated its #15 national ranking as the Ravens soared by the Park University Pirates (21-12), 15-3.  Ruben Vieyra and Ben Weber each went 2-for-3 to lead the Pirates; Vieyra had two RBI.

Men's Volleyball Results
PARK EARNS BID TO NAIA NATIONALS WITH MAMVIC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP
ST. CHARLES, MO--Park University (24-5) took home the MAMVIC post-season tournament championship and earned an automatic bid to the 2003 NAIA National Championship Tournament in Davenport, Iowa, April 24-25, with wins against William Woods (30-21, 30-20, 30-25) and Missouri Baptist (30-26, 30-20, 30-23) on Saturday afternoon in St. Charles, Mo.  Park was seeded third in the tournament; the Pirates are ranked #2 in the nation.  All-tournament team selections from Park were Skye Gosewisch and Marco Aurelio.  Junior setter Gustavo Rocha was named MVP of the tournament.

FAVORABLE CONDITIONS, SIMPSON OPEN YIELD NATIONAL QUALIFIERS
INDIANOLA, IOWA--Freshman jumper Jelena Tasic established a Park University record in the triple jump on Saturday, gliding 37' 9.5" inches for a first place finish in the Simpson College Open.  Her mark qualified her for the NAIA National Championship meet at the end of the season.  She also took first place in the long jump, qualifying for Nationals with a mark of 18' 5.75".  Jessica Ferguson won the 3,000-meter steeplechase, provisionally qualifying for Nationals and establishing a Park record in 11 minutes, 59 seconds.  Other provisional qualifiers for Nationals were Crystal Bethel (women's 800M, 2:19.34) and Mabior Atem (men's 5000M, 14:59.86).  The meet was hosted by Simpson College, where Park alum Tim Beyers ('97) is in his second season as the head track and field coach.

SAME PLAYERS, DIFFERENT TEAMS; PIRATES AND BOBCATS TOPSY-TURVY IN MCAC SPLITPark UniversityPeru State College (Neb.)
PARKVILLE, MO--Park University (13-13, 8-2) opened Saturday's doubleheader against the Peru State College Bobcats (17-12, 5-3) with a lopsided 9-1 win, fueled by junior Sherry Faulconer's two-hit complete game pitching effort.  The Bobcats' lone run came on a solo homerun by senior Jessica Hill in the top of the fourth inning.  The game lasted one hour.  Catcher Trista Tomasek led Park with a single, a double and three RBI.  Bridget Duhme had three singles and an RBI.  Junior Faulconer and LaJeana Fagan each added a double.  In the second game, roles reversed as the Bobcats cranked in four runs in the top of the first inning.  Peru State went on to win the game, 6-2.  Fagan had a homerun for Park in the second game; sophomore Racheal Stoops contributed a pair of double and an RBI.

PIRATES HIT SNAG IN FINAL GAME AGAINST CENTRAL CHRISTIAN
MCPHERSON, KS--Freshman Mohammed Mohammed crushed two homeruns in the first game of Park's doubleheader Saturday against the Central Christian College Tigers, leading the Pirates (21-11, 10-4) to the 10-4 win with three RBI.  Ben Weber also also had three RBI, going 2-for-3 with a homerun and a double.  Andy Morgan was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Brett Rymer earned the pitching win.  In the second game, Central Christian responded with a 10-7 win, despite homeruns by Park's Joe Barbosa and Andy Morgan.  Barbosa finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBI and a double in addition to the homerun.

HOLZ, PICKETT COMBINE FOR TWENTY K'S VERSUS CENTRAL CHRISTIANJeff Holz
MCPHERSON, KS--Park University pitchers Jeff Holz and Joe Pickett combined for twenty strikeouts in the Pirates' sweep of the Central Christian College Tigers on Friday.  Holz improved to 4-1, striking out nine batters in six innings as Park won, 9-1. Offensive support came from R.J. Nab (2-for-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR) and senior first baseman Stephen Kent (3-for-4, 2 RBI).  Joe Pickett earned the win in the second game as he threw a complete game, two-hit shutout.  Pickett improved 5-1 and recorded 11 strikeouts.  Run support came from Nab (2-for-4, 2 R, 3 SB, 2 BB), freshman Mohammed Mohammed (2-for-3, HR), Joe Barbosa (2-for-4, 2 RBI), and Ben Weber (2-for-4).  Park improved to 20-10 overall, 9-3 in the MCAC with the wins.  The Pirates return to action against Central Christian on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
