KRISTIN GILMORE BUZZER-BEATER SINKS #8 BRESCIA; PARK
WINS, 48-46
PARKVILLE, MO--Brescia University (20-5) and Park University (18-3) scrapped for
forty minutes Saturday afternoon. The two programs were vying for the lead
in the NAIA Independent Region; before Saturday, Brescia was the clear favorite,
entering the contest as the #8 team in NAIA Women's Division I basketball.
Brescia controlled the game early, taking a six point
lead into the locker room at halftime and outrebounding Park 20-14 in the game's
first twenty minutes. Park led
only
briefly in the opening period, at 15-14 after a Michelle Dean free throw.
The lead lasted seven seconds before Brescia's Lauren Simmons hit a
three-pointer to restore the advantage to her Bearcats.
In the second half, Park continued to trail while
gradually regaining the rebounding edge. With 1:04 remaining, junior
forward Randi Meissner sank a pair of free throws to knot the score at 46-46.
This came after Park fought back from a 46-41 deficit with six minutes left in
the game. With the scored tied, Park regained possession on a loose ball
out of bounds following a missed one-and-one opportunity by Brescia with 12
seconds left. As a team, the Bearcats ended the night 4-for-13 (30.8%),
only slightly better than Park's dire effort from the floor: 13-of-59 (22.0%).
With time winding down, Gilmore took a baseline jumper
which sat on the rim before sealing the win with no time remaining. It was
Park's seventh win in a row. Park outrebounded the Bearcats, 52-39,
following a plus-19 rebounding effort in the second half.
Sophomore forward LaTasha Johnson led Park with 11
points; Meissner hauled in 17 rebounds. Brescia's Jennifer Flener had 14
points and 11 rebounds to lead her team. Park hosts
Hannibal-LaGrange College in the final home game of the season for the women on
Thursday at 5:00 p.m. |

MEISSNER WARMS PIRATES WITH TRIPLE DOUBLE IN WIN OVER
LANGSTON
PARKVILLE, MO--Junior forward Randi Meissner struggled to score against
Langston's stifling defense early in Thursday's 62-55 Park win against the
visiting Lady Lions (11-10). At halftime, she had just six points to go
with nine rebounds and nine blocked shots. In the second half, Langston
rallied behind a smothering1-3-1 trapping zone; the Lady Lions led by as many as
nine points mid-way through the second half. Park (17-3) responded, getting an
assist from junior Randi Meissner that gave Tenysha Brown a layup at the 5:59
mark, as the Pirates claimed a one-point lead. In the closing minutes,
Meissner, the nation's rebounding leader, netted four free throws to help seal
the win.
Johnson led the Pirates with 20 points. Meissner,
who has a nation-best 15 double-doubles this season, recorded her first
triple-double of the year with 16 points, 13 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.
Michelle Dean and Tangela Rogers each had four assists for the Pirates.
For Langston, Cynthia Hogg put up 16 points to go with 10 rebounds. Park
hosts #8 Brescia University at 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
