Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching

The CASTL Program seeks to support the development of a scholarship of teaching and learning that: fosters significant, long-lasting learning for all students; enhances the practice and profession of teaching, and; brings to faculty members' work as teachers the recognition and reward afforded to other forms of scholarly work.

Achieving these goals involves significant shifts in thought and practice. For faculty in most settings, teaching is a private act, limited to the teacher and students; it is rarely evaluated by professional peers. "The result," writes Carnegie Foundation President Lee S. Shulman, "is that those who engage in innovative acts of teaching rarely build upon the work of others; nor can others build upon theirs." Thus, CASTL seeks to render teaching public, subject to critical evaluation, and usable by others in both the scholarly and the general community.

InSight is a collection of faculty scholarship highlighting the work of Park University faculty. It is a refereed journal published annually by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) that features theoretical and empirically-based research articles, critical reflection pieces, case studies and classroom innovations relevant to teaching, learning and assessment.

The Research Mentoring Program provides an opportunity for Park University faculty who are working on articles, book manuscripts, and dissertations to benefit from the support and accountability of a community of writers.  In addition to facilitating collaboration and the sharing of resources among faculty writers, CETL’s Research Mentoring Program will also arrange guest speakers on a variety of topics, from grant writing to conference proposal writing.

CETL piloted a “Summer Scholarly Writing Group” to support University faculty and staff working on articles, dissertations, and book manuscripts. Based on feedback from that group, CETL has determined that year-long support for faculty writers is needed. Starting Fall 2007, CETL will provide research mentoring on an individualized basis to faculty who would like support reaching their scholarly writing goals.

The Park University Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning is pleased to facilitate an annual gathering of area faculty interested in promoting and strengthening the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) at regional colleges and universities.

CETL hosted the first event of its kind April 2007 and have been approached to continue to facilitate an ongoing symposium on a larger scale in the future.

Topics at previous Symposiums include:

• Institutional definitions of SoTL
• Classroom-based research and reflective practices
• Designing collaborative and cross-institutional SoTL projects
• Raising faculty awareness of SoTL
• Institutional benchmarks for SoTL
