About Beverley Byers-Pevitts, Ph.D.On June 1, 2001, Dr. Beverley Byers-Pevitts was officially welcomed into the top leadership role at Park University when she became Park University's 14th president. She brings numerous administrative talents and rich educational experiences that have prepared her well to serve the University. Before coming to Park University, Dr. Byers-Pevitts served as the Interim President and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Texas Woman's University. Her previous administrative and faculty experiences include Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of Northern Iowa; Chair and Director of Graduate Studies of the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Nevada; and faculty appointments at Kentucky Wesleyan College, Pfeiffer University, Western Carolina University, and Young Harris College. Dr. Byers-Pevitts received her Ph.D. with a multidisciplinary degree in English, Philosophy, Speech Communication and Theatre, and an M.A. in Theatre from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. She received a B.A. in English from Kentucky Wesleyan College. Her postdoctoral study was conducted at the Harvard Institutes for Higher Education. She serves on the National Advisory Board of the Women's Museum, a division of the Smithsonian Institution. From 1999-2001, Dr. Byers-Pevitts served as a member of the Texas Governor's Commission on Women, appointed by then Governor George W. Bush. She has served as a member of the Formula Advisory Committee to the Texas Higher Education Coordination Board, and on the Board of Directors of the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences. A member of the National Theatre Conference and the Leagues of Professional Theatre Women, she served as founding President of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE); as President of the Women's Program of the American Theatre Association, and as the first editor of ATHE's Theatre Topics, published by the Johns Hopkins University Press. Dr. Byers-Previtts is a professionally produced and published playwright. Additionally, she has had numerous articles published in educational journals and books, and has lectured widely on leadership, access and equity in higher education, women's health, academic restructuring, faculty roles, distance learning, and the future of universities. |
