BI 106 (GE) - Introduction to Biology

Course Description: A first course in biology stressing the functions of science, heredity, evolution and ecology with emphasis on man's role in the ecological system. (Does not apply to biology majors.)

Credit Hours: 3:0:3

Learning Outcomes: Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Describe and apply the basic ideas of the scientific method.
  • Describe the basic fields of study in biology and the problems examined by each field.
  • Describe the properties of living organisms.
  • Describe the properties of organisms in the 6 Kingdoms of living organisms and the major divisions of those Kingdoms.
  • Describe the structure of ecosystems, populations and communities.
  • Describe the major biomes.
  • Describe the major ideas behind evolutionary theory and the evidence for evolution.
  • Describe how and why organisms change over time.
  • Describe the structure of cells and the advantage of being made of cells.
  • Describe mitosis and meiosis.
  • Explain the major concepts of Mendalian genetics

Course Assessment: The teaching techniques utilized in this course include: traditional lectures by the instructor, in-class discussions with other students, hands-on exercises and completion of pertinent homework problems. Some work must be completed over the internet. The student's overall command of biology will be measured with three regular examinations over lecture material. The examinations will be composed of short answer, labeling, multiple choice and essay questions.
