BI 114 - General Biology
Course Description:
Selected principles of biology including molecular and cellular biology,
homeostatic mechanisms, and systematics are discussed. Prerequisite:
BI 111 or permission of the instructor.
Credit Hours: 3:3:4

- Use a microscope competently.
- Write a scientific paper.
- Use the scientific method.
- Identify and describe the function of cell organelles.
- Describe the major organic compounds and their importance to life.
- Explain important metabolic reactions.
- Understand the basics of inheritance and genetics.
- Define evolution and natural selection.
- Relate evolutionary theory to all parts of biology.
- Understand the basics of taxonomy and classification.
- Comprehend the complexity of interrelationships among organisms and their environment.
- Understand some of the basic concepts of ecology.
- Describe the role of behavior in ecology and evolution.
- Explain the role of geography for biome location and structure.
- Understand the role of humans in biology.
Course Assessment: Exams, papers, quizzes, lab reports,
