BI 214 (GE) - Personal and Community Health

Course Description: Educational in nature with emphasis on personal hygiene, community health and health education, this course covers diverse topics such as: wellness, mental health, stress, nutrition, weight management, communicable disease, non-communicable disease, reproductive health, parenting, substance abuse, aging and ecology. Socioeconomic and sociocultural factors that impact the wellness of specific cultural groups will also be discussed. This course does not count toward a biology major.

Credit Hours: 3:0:3

Learning Outcomes: Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Define science and pseudoscience.
  • Be a skeptic about health information from any source.
  • Describe the 6 major nutritional categories.
  • Determine their nutritional intake as compared to national guidelines.
  • Describe major health problems related to poor nutrition.
  • Compare and contrast carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.
  • Understand the importance and describe the roles of vitamins, minerals, and water in human nutrition.
  • Describe the role of exercise in maintaining and improving health.
  • Understand the concepts of calories and energy balance.
  • Determine their relative strength, flexibility, endurance, and body fat.
  • Identify the sexual anatomy of humans.
  • Understand the role of most reproductive organs.
  • Compare and contrast the costs and benefits of many birth control methods.
  • Understand the anatomy, physiology, and psychology of pregnancy and birth.
  • Describe the major classes of drugs and their effects.
  • Differentiate physical and psychological addiction.
  • Describe the short- and long-term effect of alcohol and tobacco use.
  • Describe many sexually transmitted diseases including their symptoms, prevalence in society, treatment, and transmission.
  • Explain the role of the immune system and associated organs and cells.
  • Recognize the role of humans in our global ecosystem.
