BI 304 - Ethology

Course Description: A study of the behavior patterns of animals. Ethological methods, neural and evolutionary mechanisms are stressed. Topics include sensory perception, motor programs, orientation, communication, sexual selection, and animal societies. A research paper or project is required. Prerequisites: BI 111 or PS 101 and consent of instructor.

Credit Hours: 3:0:3

Learning Outcomes: Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • To gain an understanding of the behavioral patterns of animals.
  • To gain the ability to explain these behaviors in terms of neural and evolutionary mechanisms.
  • To gain research skills in the field of ethology by means of a project or research paper.
  • To develop unifying concepts between the fields of biology and psychology.
