BI 306 - Biological Literature

Course Description: A one-semester study of the biological thought and the methods of biological communication. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition and use of biological literature. Writing and evaluation of scientific papers is stressed. This course is to be taken during the junior year. This course will satisfy the EN 306 requirement for Biology and Athletic Training majors. Prerequisites: EN 105, EN 106 passing the WCT, and 60 accumulated hours.

Learning Outcomes: Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Identify the principal types of communications used in the scientific community and popular media;
  • Perform bibliographical searches using several different kinds of indexes and electronically;
  • Locate and evaluate information from the scientific literature;
  • Determine the main idea(s) of a scientific article, and discuss them with peers;
  • Read and critique written scientific literature;
  • Properly cite scientific sources;
  • Prepare and exhibit a poster on a topic of research;
  • Prepare written reports in a format accepted by the Council of Science Editors;
  • Produce a fully cited review paper or research proposal that could be used to conduct independent research.
