BI 340 - Comparative Anatomy
Course Description:
A study of the phylogeny and
gross structure of the organ systems of the vertebrates. Major systems of the
shark and cat are dissected and correlations are made with other groups of
vertebrates. Prerequisite:
BI 114.
Credit Hours: 3:3:4
Learning Outcomes: Students successfully
completing this course will be able to:
-
Demonstrate proper
dissection techniques
-
Identify numerous organs,
bones, muscles, and other structures of several vertebrate species
-
Describe the "Chordate Big
4"
-
Describe the common
characteristics of the Craniates
-
Understand the common
theories and concepts associated with comparative anatomy
-
Comprehend and describe
the taxonomy, systematics, and evolution of the chordates
-
Describe the major
evolutionary advances for each taxa of chordates
-
Describe the major steps
in the developmental processes of chordates
-
Identify the parts,
structures, and evolutionary relationships among taxa of the integument,
mineralized tissues, and major organ systems
-
Have a general knowledge
of the interrelationships among anatomy, physiology, evolution, genetics, and
development.
Course Assessment:
Exams, paper, laboratory
practicals, dissection technique.
