BI 378 - Ecology

Course Description: A study of the interrelationships between organisms and their environment. Laboratory is included. Prerequisites: BI 114 and CH 107.

Credit Hours: 3:3:4

Learning Outcomes: Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Define population, species, community, and ecosystem
  • Describe nutrient cycling in the biosphere
  • Identify and describe the biotic and abiotic components of the major biomes
  • Understand the complexities of the food web
  • Describe how demography affects ecology of a population and community
  • Understand the roles of competition and predation in ecology
  • Describe and define the concept of niche and habitat
  • Describe the theories of island biogeography and habitat fragmentation on an ecosystem
  • Understand the role of disturbance and succession in ecology
  • Describe many of the theories of population dynamics
  • Comprehend the roles of behavior, life history, and evolution in ecology
  • Describe the role of humans in modern ecology

Course Assessment: Exams, laboratory practicals, laboratory reports, assignments, research paper.
