Internship Experience - by: David Marshall
David Marshall and U.S. Representative - Emanuel Cleaver, II
My name is David Marshall and I completed a Fall and Spring 2006-2007 Internship for the Department of Labor, in the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) in our nation’s capital, Washington, DC. I found the internship through doing extensive research on internships. While doing my research, I found a great opportunity in Washington, DC through the prestigious institution appropriately named, The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars. The institution places interns in different sectors within the federal government. I decided to complete all the formal paperwork and an essay as part of the application process. Within 5 days, I found out that I had been accepted. At that time I learned about scholarship opportunities for students with disabilities, and since I have a disability, I decided to apply for a scholarship. Three weeks after being accepted I learned that I had been awarded the scholarship. The internship has made me more aware of how government accomplishes initiatives in Washington, but I also learned how disabilities affect people in their day to day lives. I have discovered different tools that are available to help them, and how they can use these tools to become more productive. The internship has been an invaluable experience for me.
