Wen Hsin, PhD

What do you enjoy most about being a Faculty Member?

"Mostly the flexible time in that, besides the fixed teaching and committee schedules, I can set my own schedule-- sometimes I work early, sometimes I work late.  I like the academic freedom. I can perform studies or projects that I deem useful to the society.  I can be creative with the student projects depending on their abilities and interests.  I enjoy watching students grow to be useful citizens in their communities.  Of course, the summer and winter breaks are nice.  While performing a few projects, I get to enjoy reading novels with longer stretches of time during these breaks."

What are some of your current projects?

Dr. Hsin currently, "coaches a FIRST LEGO League (FLL) team, consisting of 11 community students, aged from 9-14.  Eight students from current CS365 also serve as mentors to the team.  We meet once a week on Wednesday night at Park University.  This team will compete in the FLL--Kansas City regional tournament in February 2008.  Last year, Park University hosted the Kansas City FLL regional tournament.  ICS alumnus, then student, Nick Kreeger and I served as mentors to the team 'Nanobot Builder' which won the second place at that tournament.

During this fall break, an MCIS student and I will participate in the Brazil service learning project, teaching computer related subjects to the Pau Amarelo community students.  It is great to participate in this project because community students can learn the needed skills to get jobs; and some did obtain jobs from our classes in past trips.  Additionally, I will teach Chinese Macrame to the community ladies who can then make and sale them for the benefit of the community."

Dr. Hsin also, "supervises a few computer science students who are writing Java applet animations to illustrate computer networking concepts.  These animations, if selected will get published in a Computer Networking textbook web site.  According to the authors of the textbook, this set of public available Java applet animations has benefited students from all over the world.  It certainly has benefited the computer networking students at Park University for over 3 years."  In addition to these students Dr. Hsin also "supervises a few computer science students who are doing various projects in robots and computer related studies."

Dr. Hsin is "organizing teams of computer science students to compete in the annual ACM (Association of Computing Machinery) and CCSC (Consortium of Computing Science in Colleges) programming contests."  She also, "conducts research in cryptography for establishing an efficient digital signature scheme in the area of public-key signature system."

What exciting things are currently happening in your department?

ICS maintains a news and events web site at http://captain.park.edu/ics/newsAndEvents/news.shtml.  In addition to the projects being conducted by many faculty at ICS, Dr. Hsin said that "ACM Online and Parkville student clubs are planning to do a computer repair or helpdesk shop to service students' and faculty's personal computers."

What is a little known fact about you?

"I am also a student at Park, taking beginner piano lessons.  I have a very supporting husband and two daughters.  My daughters told me that I make the best dumplings in the world."

In addition to teaching on the Parkville Campus in the Information and Computer Science (ICS) department, Dr. Hsin has volunteered to teach Chinese Language, Chinese Macrame, Chinese yo-yo and Chinese calligraphy at various communities and summer camps.  Dr. Hsin particularly enjoys making animals out of Chinese Macrame (or Chinese Knotting) strings.  She has a collection Chinese Macrame string of dragonflies, snails, snakes, birds, fish, and dragons.
