Lora Cohn is a Midwestern native—born in Illinois and raised in a small town in Northeast Missouri.  She received her Doctorate from the University of Kansas in Communication Studies in 2005 and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Truman State in Mass Communication in 1986.  Her primary research interests are political communication, organizational leadership, and multiple intelligences theory.  She teaches courses on organizational leadership, research methods, communication theory, and intercultural communication.

She has published book reviews in Presidential Studies Quarterly, a chapter on President Eisenhower’s agricultural rhetoric, and a chapter on teaching students with special needs in online programs.  She is active in the Central States Communication Association and planned the program for the Media Studies Interest Group and has been a member of the Finance Committee.  She has received two top paper awards from Central States for her work on Blunt’s political maneuvering in a fight over judicial selection and on Star Trek Voyager.  She has presented on top panels on Ohio rhetors, online education, and using Multiple Intelligence theory in teaching.

She incorporates service learning in her teaching and routinely has students judge area speech and debate tournaments and has had students work with area businesses developing training and crisis plans.  Her students are currently working with the Smithville Economic Development Committee to research community and business attitudes toward development and design more persuasive materials about the Committee’s goals.

She married her college debate partner and lives in Parkville with two cats.
