  • Melanie Smith worked as a county-level emergency management specialist prior to teaching with Park University.  She also engaged in hospital and community emergency preparedness activities through her work as an emergency nurse, nurse manager, and firefighter/paramedic.
  • Melanie developed and taught upper level and graduate emergency management courses in disaster response and recovery and special topics prior to coming to Park University.
  • Melanie’s research interests include hospital preparedness for disasters, development of academic emergency management programs, and the application of emergency management theories to local disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.
  • Melanie has been a lead designer for numerous disaster exercises, from small-scale discussion-based exercises to large full-scale exercises with several hundred participants representing dozens of agencies and jurisdictions.
