The Academic Support Center, located in room 406 of the Mabee Learning Center (near the library), offers many services to Park University students. All services are provided free of charge to Park students.

Services offered

Placement Tests for incoming students:

Beginning students with ACT sub scores below the national average and those who do not transfer credit for College Algebra and/or EN105 and EN106 take placement exams to determine the appropriate beginning courses at Park. Students may be required to take tests in reading, writing, and/or math.

Developmental Courses:

The Director of Academic Support Services schedules, oversees, and hires adjunct instructors to teach developmental courses in reading, writing, and math. Student placement in these courses is determined by scores on placement tests.

Free Tutoring:

We provide tutors for many academic subjects, including writing, math, accounting, computer science, and others. Tutors must have received faculty recommendation and superior GPA in the subject to qualify. Some adjunct faculty are also employed as professional tutors. Most tutoring is done in the ASC during operating hours, but some appointments are available on weekends.

Faculty who would like to arrange tutor-led study groups for their classes are invited to contact the Academic Support Center to discuss this possibility. We also welcome (and require) faculty recommendation for new tutors.

Computer Lab:

We maintain a computer lab with standard software for most needed applications, Internet access, and printer. Our staff is available to help students who need assistance.

Faculty are also welcome to use our computers. Our computer lab is available during normal ASC hours, except during exam weeks, when the lab is used for Internet testing.

Test preparation help

Test Preparation classes for the Writing Competency Test are offered on several days and times before each administration of the WCT (five times per year). WCT test dates, schedule of prep classes, and helpful information and tips for preparation for the WCT are available at the ASC website.

Test preparation advice and help is also available for students preparing to take the C-BASE exam (required of all students entering the teacher education programs). Our staff can help students prepare for the math portion (we suggest students obtain the available C-BASE math workbook). We can also guide students to helpful resources for preparation for other parts of the test.

Disability Services:

The Director of Academic Support Services coordinates services and accommodations for qualifying students with disabilities. Students must identify themselves by providing adequate and appropriate documentation to the Director of Academic Support Services. Park University policy on disability services may be found at http://www.park.edu/support/policy.asp.

Services may include sign language interpreters, note takers, extended time allowed for tests, testing in separate location (to minimize distractions), etc., but are always determined by the disability documentation presented. Faculty are not informed of the nature of a student’s disability; only of the accommodations needed. Students who request academic accommodations from an instructor should be referred to the Director of Academic Support Services if they have not previously identified themselves and presented documentation.
