Test Grading and Computerized Scanning Uses

Examinations

Rapid grading and statistical analysis of objective tests (multiple choice, true/false, up to five item matching, yes/no, up to five item ranking, etc.). Many forms also provide space for open ended question responses.

Surveys

Rapid tabulation and statistical analysis of objective survey data (multiple choice, Likert scales, agree/disagree, yes/no, up to five item ranking, etc). Many forms also provide space for open ended question responses.

Research

Any data that can be recorded onto a scannable form can be scored or tabulated and analyzed. Furthermore, an ASCII file can be created for downloading into SPSS for other statistical analysis not available through the scanner software.

Test Grading and Computerized Scanning Procedure

Obtain scanner forms

Dr. John Tew can advise which forms best suit certain purposes and can help design tests or surveys for scanner analysis. Forms can be obtained free of cost from the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.

Administer the examination or survey

Instruct students to:

  • Use only No. 2 pencils.
  • Fill in personal information starting from the left side of each section. For names, put last name first.
  • Color in blank circles between words.
  • Avoid making stray marks on the forms. No doodling!
  • Erase errors completely.
  • Color in desired circles completely.

Do not fold the forms. Stack them so that all are face up and turned in the same direction.

For examinations, prepare an Answer Key

Using one of the blank forms, mark the correct answers with a No. 2 pencil. There are three possibilities for answers on each item:

  • One right answer (fill in the correct circle)
  • All answers to be counted as right (fill in all circles on the answer key)

Leave the personal information sections blank. Put a sticky note or write in the name section on that sheet labeled "Answer Key". Place it on top the stack of completed test forms.

Turn in the materials for scanning

Direct delivery to the Office of Institutional Assessment will promote security of the forms.

Pick up the scanner forms and printout of the analysis

Generally these will be available the next work day after they are submitted. Any variation in turn around time will be conveyed at the time the forms come into the Office of Institutional Assessment. High use periods with longer turn around times will be the last two weeks of every semester, for example.
