Nonprofit & Community Services Management

The Master of Public Affairs degree with the Nonprofit & Community Services Management concentration provides preparation primarily for careers in organizations providing services to alleviate individual family and community needs and problems. This concentration also prepares for meaningful contribution to the community through service on boards and in various leadership and advocacy roles.

Students who complete this emphasis will be prepared to:

  • Distinguish among the nonprofit/philanthropic organizations and government and business organizations in terms of legal definitions, mission, social purpose, and impact, and define the relationship between these sectors.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge and awareness of the role of philanthropy and voluntary action in the nonprofit sector.
  • Define and have the ability to exercise the fundamental management practices in nonprofit organizations and the functions of governing boards and executive leadership.
  • Evaluate the role of individual responsibility and community mobilization in addressing social needs in terms of American democracy and from a comparative international perspective.
  • Critically analyze past and current social policy, such as social welfare, health, mental health, employment, advocacy, community development, and civil rights, in order to improve future social policy.

3. Financial Management for Nonprofit/Community Organizations (PA 594) 2 hrs.
4. Communications and Marketing for Nonprofit/Community Organizations (PA 595) 2 hrs.
5. Monitoring and Evaluation of Nonprofit/Community Organizations (PA 596) 2 hrs.
6. Community Leadership (PA 597) 2 hrs.
