Public Management

The Master of Public Affairs degree with the Public Management concentration provides preparation for careers in a wide variety of areas, including different levels of government, and in organizations which interface with government agencies and regulations. This concentration also enhances managerial leadership knowledge, development, and competence at all levels of organizations. Often appealing to public servants interested in career advancement, this concentration deepens understanding of management processes and challenges.

Students who complete this emphasis will be prepared to:

  • Apply the core concepts of management to their professional work.
  • Compare and contrast the roles and responsibilities of public organizations at the municipal, county, state and federal levels.
  • Identify the internal and external environments of any public organization.
  • Competently perform a basic evaluation of a public organization.
  • Competently perform a comparative analysis of public organizations in the United States and their counterparts in developed and developing countries.

2. Environmental Inputs in Public Organizations (PA 512) 3 hrs.
3. Evaluation and Impact of Public Organizations* (PA 513) 3 hrs.
*Prerequisite: PA 502
Electives (select three): 6 hrs.
1. Planning and Structuring of Public Organizations (PA 561) 2 hrs.

Administrative Leadership (PA 562)

2 hrs.
3. Personnel Systems of Public Organizations (PA 563) 2 hrs.
4. Budgeting and Finances of Public Organizations (PA 564) 2 hrs.
5. Performance of Public Organizations (PA 565) 2 hrs.
6. Public Organizations and the Law (PA 566) 2 hrs.
Substitution for PBMG Electives, up to two credit hours; additional hours are added under cross-sector courses*: 6 hrs.
