Current Initiatives

The International Center for Civic Engagement is engaged in several activities:

• The Center has published three civic engagement papers.
• The Center produces one electronic newsletter, UNPAN Newsletter.
• The Center operates Park's Climate Commitment, Community Outreach, Resources for Women, and Interfaith web sites.
• The Center coordinates Park's annual Democracy Day high school essay contest.
• The Center convenes Park's Great Decisions discussion group.

In 2008, the Center:

• launched a new book discussion series;
• co-sponsored "Vital Conversations: John Brown" on April 16;
• hosted a town hall meeting featuring MO State Rep. Jason Grill on July 16;
• hosted a workforce housing community discussion on August 20;
• launched a 2008 general election information web site;
• co-sponsored nuclear weapons policy programs on September 18 and 19;
• convened a visit of administrators from Mexico on September 26; and
• hosted a presentation by Amy Holman, Deputy Director of the Bilateral Trade Office in the Bureau of Economic, Energy and Business Affairs of the State Department on October 10.

In 2009, the Center has/will:

• hosted a U.S. Presidential Inauguration program on January 20;
• co-sponsored an interfaith dialogue on February 4; and
• hosted an Entrepreneurial Exchange II forum on May 8.

ICCE Director Erik Bergrud:

• serves as national vice president of the American Society for Public Administration;
• moderates the American Political Science Association's (APSA) civic education listserv;
• edits the International Civic Engagement blog;
• serves as vice chair of the American Society for Public Administration's (ASPA) Section on Certified Public Management;
• serves on the Board of Advisors for the Campaign for a United States Public Service Academy;
• serves on the Board of Directors of the Hispanic Economic Development Corporation and International Relations Council;
• co-edits an Information Age Publishing book series on "Research in International Civic Engagement."

In 2009, Bergrud:

• appeared on KSHB Channel 41 as part of a February 23 interview regarding the Access Missouri scholarship program;
• served on a March 10 UPS World Trade Center Book Club panel discussion on Fareed Zakaria's The Post-American World;
• delivered three presentations at the 2009 American Society for Public Administration Annual Conference;
• delivered presentations to Park Honors classes and a Park BPA class;
• delivered a presentation titled "Civic Engagement and Park University" at an April 9 Northland EXCEL class; and
• delivered an address to the Spring 2009 Park Hauptmann School graduates on May 9.

In 2008, Bergrud:

• delivered a presentation on mentoring at the January 23 meeting of the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration;
• delivered a presentation titled "Information Resources for an Unscripted Future" at the 2008 American Society for Public Administration National Conference;
• delivered a presentation titled "Is the United States Ready for a Public Service Academy?" at the 2008 International Public Management Association for Human Relations Central Region Training Conference;
• delivered a presentation titled "Becoming a Sustainable University" at a July 12, 2008 meeting of the Sierra Club Thomas Hart Benton Group's Conservation Committee;
• delivered a presentation titled "Public Organizations and Civic Engagement" to a Park University BPA class;
• delivered a presentation titled "Becoming a Sustainable University" at an August 19, 2008 meeting of the Gladstone, MO Rotary Club; and
• delivered a presentation titled "Facing an Unscripted Future: Can a Sixty-Nine Year Old Association Adjust to Changing Times?" at the 2008 Southeastern Conference for Public Administration.
