Orkhan E. Hasanov
Hometown: Baku
Orkhan describes his hometown:
I am from Baku, a city where one of the world's most ancient human habitats
was found, dating back to 1 - 1.2 million years. The City of Baku is the capital
of Azerbaijan. Baku is located on the coast of the Caspian Sea. It's an ancient
and historic city. It has been well known as an oil producing capital of the
world for more than 100 years. Baku became the major oil producing city of the
world. For centuries before that, it was a major trading center on the "Silk
Road" for many traders from many different countries, which were trading goods
from European cities to Asian cities. The "Old City" has a walled enclave
including a palace of the king from the 15th century, an ancient tower and
bazaar that still has that fresh flavor of food from the ancient time. The
center of Baku is the old town, which is also a fortress. Most of the walls were
destroyed as a result of occupations of the Empires. The main point of the "Old
City" starts from the "Maiden Tower" that was built in eleventh century. The
surrounding walls are very thick, about five - six meters. Also, Baku was known
for its culturally developed society, schools, art, museums, libraries, palaces
and industrial sites. Baku is the largest seaport on the Caspian Sea. It handles
over fifteen million tons of cargo a year. The port has civil and commercial
passenger lines with neighboring Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan.
