Park Student Profile
Darina Durlova
Born: Stara Zagora
She tells us about her home town:
My city is located in the southern part of Bulgaria, and is one of the largest
cities in the country with a population of 150,000. Stara Zagora is an ancient
town with 8,000 years of history. Most people call it the city of Straight
streets because it was another city before and was burned down during the
Ottoman rule. Afterwards, a new city was built on top of the old one with a
gridiron street pattern, so the entire city has straight streets where it is
easy to know your way around without getting lost.
We have the Sredna Gora Mountain to the east and south of my city and the
Maritza River valley which influences our Mediterranean climate. There is a Rose
valley which is the main component of the French perfume which is one of our
biggest exports to France and other countries as well.
The people of Stara Zagora are friendly and minditheir business, meaning if they
do not know you in most cases they will not talk with you, but once they get to
know you then they are very friendly. The majority of people belong to the
Thracian religion and the remaining 9% are Turkish. Again my city is well known
as the city of poets. Because of that we have lots of theaters. There is a drama
theater in my community for non professionals - we the youth of the community
gather up together to practice, rehearse and actually perform in special events
like the big drama festivals that are organized for everybody.
The city is an educational center with many specialized secondary schools as
well as scientific and cultural institutes and Thracian University’s higher
Medical Institute, Veterinary Medicine and others.
Like in any other city, people will go and hangout in public places where they
have fun during weekends. They will go to clubs, bars, theaters, the city
museum, parks, shopping markets, fish from the river and sometimes they just
stay indoors with their families and friends.
