Tewfit Mulatu
Born: Addis Ababa
Tewfit describes her community/city:
Addis Ababa is a very busy community with all kinds of people living on
different economic levels in the city. It is a place where everyone knows almost
everyone else, a place where you walk down the streets and you can talk with
everyone, a place where you find people concerned with how one is doing.
The city center is very busy, since it is where everything is location: a lot of
businesses, government buildings, medical centers and a busy
transportation system.
In Addis Ababa, you will find lower class, middle class and upper class
residential areas. The section that I am from is divided according to class. I
could classify it as middle class. The sad part is the gap between the
rich and the poor is very visible. On a regular basis you will find people
working hard struggling to live, on the streets expect to see lots of beggars,
people walking around looking for jobs, people who are heading off to work, and
children playing on the streets.
You find people going out to bars and clubs for leisure. There are lots of
community activities whereby the whole community will gather together and play,
compete, support each other and have fun. The most dominant religion in my
community is Ethiopian Orthodox, so many people are involved in traditions that
follow the religion.
