Florence Maingi
Born: Nyiri District
Hometown: Nairobi

Florence describes her hometown:

I was born in the Nyiri which is the central district of Kenya. I come from a Kikuyu tribe, which is the most dominating tribe in Kenya. My native language is Kikuyu and my national language is Kiswahili.

I am from a small community called Karatina initially, but I lived in Nairobi before I came here to the United States. As it is a busy city getting around can quite be difficult. By that I mean that a person who is not used to the city will find it hard to find their way around because it is very busy and crowded. You will find lots of the public transport moving up and down the streets of Nairobi, the term for the public transportation is people call them “Matatus.” Most people live on the outskirts of the city in small communities. The average day for most people starts at 5:00 a.m. until the following day. The young people attend school from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., while adults are working hard making a living for their families.

In my community you find people with very poor status to at least average. It's very busy, noisy and very nice!
