Graduate Certificate in Applied Music
Admissions Process

The graduate certificate program in applied music is designed for young artists who want to build on their knowledge and expertise in piano or string performance. Minimum graduate semester credits required for the certificate are 24.

Tuition for this program is $451 per credit hour.

General admission requirements are listed with the graduate school and all applicants must submit to the Graduate School the following documents unless otherwise indicated by policy:

  1. An application for graduate admission.
  2. An application fee.
  3. An official transcript of the bachelor’s degree sent to the Graduate School by the issuing institution.
  4. In addition to the above requirements the International Center for Music requires the following for the Certificate program:

  5. A current resume
  6. Two letters of recommendation by individuals who are qualified to judge the applicant’s personal and musical talents.
  7. A list of the candidate’s complete repertoire, including concerto repertoire, and several programs from concerts in which the applicant has participated (photocopied programs are acceptable).
  8. Every applicant to the Certificate program must also AUDITION.

Audition Requirements

Every applicant to the Graduate Certificate Program must audition either in person or by video AND audio recording. Repertoire of the video and audio should be the same.

Audition Schedule

Applicants have two options for auditioning:
1. Recording audition
If the applicant is not able to make live audition, it is required to submit BOTH Video (DVD or VHS) AND CD. All application material should be received no later than January 5 (Friday), 2007.

2. Live audition and Call back*
Live audition and Call back at Park University is scheduled for
February 3 (Saturday), 2007 
10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

*Faculties may ask for a “call back” audition if necessary.

Audition Accompanist

The International Center for Music will provide an accompanist for string auditions. The applicant must supply ICM’s accompanist with the appropriate piano scores before the time of the audition. It is up to the discretion of the audition committee whether the audition will be heard if no music is provided. Photocopied music is not acceptable in place of a score. A pre-audition rehearsal with the accompanist will be arranged.

Audition Procedures

Applicants may warm up in an assigned practice room before their auditions. If an applicant is late for the scheduled audition, the audition committee will decide whether or not to hear the audition. The committee is not obliged to hear all the music that an applicant may have prepared nor to give an audition evaluation.

Required Repetoire for Auditions

PIANO

a. One complete work by a baroque composer

b. One complete classical sonata

c. Two etudes by Chopin

d. One work or group of works by a romantic composer

e. One work of choice

STRINGS

a. Two contrasting movements of unaccompanied Bach

b. One movement of a classical concerto with cadenza

c. One movement of a romantic concerto or a concert piece

Acceptance Notification

Applicants will be notified of their acceptance after all materials have been received and the audition process has been completed.
