Carol Carlson

Violinist Carol Carlson is a native of Boulder, Colorado.  She grew up playing violin in the Boulder Suzuki Strings program and the Denver Young Artist's Orchestra.  Ms. Carlson attended Truman State University, earning a Bachelor of Music (violin performance) and a Bachelor of Arts (political science and Spanish).  She spent the 2004-2005 school year living in San Sebastian, Spain and attending the Universidad de Deusto as an exchange student.  At Truman, Ms. Carlson served as concertmaster of the Truman State University Symphony Orchestra and first violinist of the President's String Quartet.

As a soloist, Ms. Carlson has won numerous concerto competitions, most recently Truman's Gold Medal competition.  She performed with the TSU Symphony in March 2006.  In 2002, the President's String Quartet won second place at the MTNA National Collegiate Chamber Music Competition, as well as winning the MTNA state level in both 2002 and 2004. Ms. Carlson is a devotee of new music, and has commissioned works for solo violin as well as violin and ensemble from Kansas City composer Brad Fowler.

Ms. Carlson participated in the Aspen Music Festival and School in the summer of 2006; the 2004 Missouri-International Music Festival in Montaione, Italy; the Truman State University Orchestra's Tour of Italy in May 2002; and numerous chamber music festivals in Colorado.

Ms. Carlson is a strong advocate of music education for children.  She has taught privately for a number of years, as well as teaching group lessons and in after-school programs.  Through TSU's chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, Ms. Carlson founded MidWest StringFest, a weekend of workshops, performances, and outreach for the young string players of Missouri.

Currently Ms. Carlson is pursuing an Artist's Certificate at Park University in the studio of Ben Sayevich.  Previous teachers have included Carole Cowan, Sam McClure, Alberto Bologni, William Starr, and Amy Gesmer-Packman.
