Timothy DeightonTimothy Deighton

Timothy Deighton is associate professor of viola at Penn State University where he teaches viola, chamber music, viola literature, pedagogy, and orchestral excerpts, and directs the Viola Ensemble.

A native of New Zealand, he received a bachelor of music with honors degree from Victoria University of Wellington, an artist diploma from the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford, and a doctor of musical arts degree in viola and violin from the University of Kansas.

In 2002, Deighton was named Outstanding String Teacher of the Year by the Pennsylvania-Delaware String Teachers Association. He was featured at the XXVIII International Viola Congress in 2001. His first solo CD was released in 2002 on the Atoll label. He is a National Recording Artist for Radio New Zealand, and was a member of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. He appears regularly in recital with his wife, pianist Ann Deighton. During the summer he serves on the faculty of the International Musical Arts Institute (IMAI) at Fryeburg, Maine.

Diemut PoppenDiemut Poppen

Born in Münster, Germany, Diemut Poppen began violin lessons when she was seven years old, but at 17 she decided to make the viola her main instrument. She has been taught by prestigious masters, including Kashkashian, Giuranna, Bashmet, Schlichtig, Janzer and the Amadeus Quartet.

She has attended the varied musical centers worldwide and studied under Brüggen, Holliger and Abbado. She has participated in numerous chamber music performances, and is co-founder of the European Chamber Orchestra. She succeeded Nobuko Imai at the Detmold School of Music. She has served as a juror for several international competitions, including the Munich ARD.

Poppen is also director of the Chamber Music Summer Academy in Turingen and founded the Osnabruck Chamber Music Series. She has taught master classes at institutions such as the Mozarteum in Salzburg and the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid. Poppen has made recordings for various labels, including Deutsche Grammophon, Live Classics, Cappricio, Ondine, Ars Musici, Tudor and EMI. Her extensive repertoire includes the new Mijail Pletnev and Kancheli Styx concertos for viola and orchestra.

Daniel VeisDaniel Veis

Cellist Daniel Veis won first prize at the 1976 Prague Spring Competition and won the silver medal at the 1978 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Born in Prague, he studied there and at the
Moscow Conservatory with N. Shakhovskaya. He has performed as a soloist with major orchestras in venues including Avery Fisher Hall and Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, and Orchard Hall in Tokyo.

His extensive repertoire includes contemporary compositions, and he has recorded works by Dvorak, Brahms, Schumann, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saens, and Shostakovich. In 1989, he became a guest-soloist of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to a solo career, he is a member of the Rosamunde Trio. Veis is a professor of cello and vice-dean at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. He frequently gives master classes and serves on
juries of international competitions.
