IS 310 MLL: Business Applications

Course Description:
Business Applications provides an opportunity for students to understand issues surrounding the effect of emerging technologies upon multiple organizational environments. Student will explore the use of technology by organizations to solve problems as well as gain a strategic competitive advantage in the market place. Students will individually investigate the advanced capabilities of Productivity Software to solve relevant business problems. Upon completion of the course, group projects will demonstrate knowledge of concepts learned. The design of the projects will necessitate the use of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation activities. Learning Outcomes:

General objectives
  • Apply best practices in evaluation and analysis of using technology to solve business problems.
  • Evaluate ethical, economic, multicultural, and organization culture issues in implementation of technology.
  • Solve a specific assigned problem using collaborative teamwork.
  • Analyze the impact of globalization such as language, encryption, laws/regulations, handicap accessibility, etc.
Excel objectives may include but not limited to:
  • Create and Modify a Worksheet
  • Analyzing Data and Performing Calculations
  • Working with Visual Basic for Applications
Access objectives may include but are not limited to:
  • Create a Database
  • Retrieve, Present, Manage Data
  • Create and Design Queries, Forms and Reports
  • Utilize Database as a Backend to an Application
PowerPoint objectives may include but are not limited to:
  • Create a Presentation
  • Utilize Advance Features to Enhance Presentation (i.e. Auto-Timing, Sound, Graphics, etc.)
  • Design Effective Presentations for Professional Meetings
Front Page objectives may include but are not limited to:
  • Define the Web
  • Web site Design
  • Enter and Format Text and Graphics
  • Create Hyperlinks, Tables, and Input Forms
  • Evaluate and Publish a Web

Course Arrangements:

  1. Course work will include class discussions, instructor-led teaching, demonstrations, and hands-on assignments related to the objectives listed above.
  2. Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes.
  3. There will be assigned case studies to be completed. These case studies will serve as the basis for discussions about emerging technologies and their affect on varying organizations.
  4. Business Applications requires a considerable amount of lab work, which must be completed on time for credit.
  5. Students will use Business Applications to solve problems identified in case studies. These exercises will be the basis for Application Project work.
  6. There will be a written mid-term examination.
  7. Lab tests will be given periodically to assess understanding of business tools.
  8. A final project will be completed by groups of three to four students and presented for peer and instructor evaluation at the end of the course. These projects will demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the concepts and objectives described above.

Determination of Grade:
Application Projects -- 40%
Case Study Preparedness and Participation - 20%
Mid-Term and Lab Tests -- 20%
Final Group Project -- 20%
