It covers the elements of the network and security for which the administrator is responsible: servers, end-user machines, routers, local interconnection devices, and network security-related tasks and issues. It covers the configuration and trouble shooting of local area networks and wide area networks, and network protection from external and internal security threats. This is a hands-on, project-intensive course. Prerequisite: CS 365. 3:0:3.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify the requirements for and install various server and client operating systems, such as * Windows Servers (NT, 2000, 2003) *Windows End-user systems (Windows 2000, Windows XP) *Linux servers (various distributions) *Linux end-user and workstation systems (various distributions)
  2. Identify the requirements for and install various network services such as: *Domain Name Service *DHCP *Mail Services *Web Services *File and print services
  3. Manage network configuration and traffic flow through the administration of: *Routing services *Network Configuration *Network Security
  4. Identify important network and computer security issues managed through network administration: *Identify which services are needed and which are not for a given network *Identify how to manage updates to deployed systems (both servers and end users). Discuss various tools that can be used to identify attempts to compromise a network.
  5. Discuss issues involved in managing network end-users, including: *Creating end-user accounts *Assigning appropriate access to network services *Establishing and managing resource quotas
