Park University course: AR315 Ancient Greece has given the world some of its first superstars. We will follow in the footsteps of Socrates and Aristotle, Pericles, and Alexander the Great, all while exploring one of the most fascinating cities in the world. The city of Athens combines the excitement of a thriving modern city with the romance of antiquity. It contains some of the most famous ancient buildings in the world, evidence in stone of over 2000 years of architecture and urban life in this cradle of democracy and Western civilization. This course combines close study of these unique structures with reading of ancient texts written in and about Athens, with the aim of resurrecting something of her ancient political, economic and cultural history. Marble and bronze sculpture, decorated pottery, terracotta artifacts, monumental architecture, and city planning will be investigated by means of archaeological remains, epigraphical evidence and ancient literary sources. We will focus on ancient Athenian archaeology and history from the Geometric period to the Late Hellenistic times, a period spanning about 900 years. Ancient Greek culture and art have great influence in many parts of the World; understanding this influence will appeal to students of philosophy, history, religion, and art.
