The Office of Global Education and Study Abroad and the Office of Student Life are co-sponsoring a new annual alternative fall break abroad. For 2012, that destination is Petersfield, Jamaica, with Amizade Global Service Learning and Volunteer Programs. Park students who are committed to civic engagement, serving others and making a difference are invited to apply.

The application is available here in a .ppt format. You may complete the application, save it and e-mail it as an attachment to apeterson@park.edu. You can fax it to (816) 505-5478. You can also drop it off in Herr House, room 300, 301 or 302 on the Parkville campus.

Participants will stay in a homestay with a Jamaican family in Petersfield, a small village two hours from Montego Bay. They will work with the Association of Clubs (AOC), a well-established community organization. Volunteers may tutor local students, provide computer instruction, or participate in construction, maintenance and repair initiatives, and much more. No experience is necessary!

The group will have time to enjoy beaches frequented by locals and tourists as well as visit a sugar plantation.

Please note that this is a volunteer experience in a developing country. Accommodations will be simple; hot water and air conditioning are unlikely.

Please submit the online application to indicate your interest in the program. If you are accepted, you will be required to submit a nonrefundable deposit to secure your spot in the program within seven days. Final payment for students is required by September 17, 2012. Alumni, please see the Office of International Education and Study Abroad for payment arrangements.

As no courses are required in conjunction with this program, financial aid is not available for students. The sponsoring offices will be assisting accepted applicants with fundraising opportunities.
