Dr. Doris Howell Leadership and Honors Convocation Awards


J.L. Zwingle Award
The J.L. Zwingle Award is given to an outstanding faculty member - as voted on by the student body. The students of Park University are proud to pay tribute to an outstanding faculty member who exhibits the qualities they most appreciate in a teacher.

Toni Griggs Awards
The Toni Griggs Award is given to an honor a student who has made an outstanding contribution to Park University though leadership, service or work performance. This award is named in honor of a lady who had been an integral part of the workings of Park University and a dear friend throughout the years to many Park students, faculty and staff. Toni was the first recipient of the "Park Family" Award.

Tipton Award
The Tipton Award is given to honor an outstanding service contribution to Park University by a Park alumnus. It is named to honor a couple who had been a part of the Park family since the mid 1920’s. Bill and Mary Lou Tipton were both 1928 Park University graduates. Bill had a distinguished career and served as a vice president of the national Conference of Christians and Jews. For several years, he worked for Park, much of it gratis, in alumni and public relations efforts. Bill received a Distinguished Alumnus award and an Honorary Doctor of Humanities from Park. He served Park as President of the Alumni Association and a member of the Park Board of Trustees. Mary Lou, who had a Masters of Library Science, was a vital part of the Friends of the Park University Library. She was active in the Park Alumni Association and served for many years as the class agent for the class of 1928. She was, several years, editor of the Record, a quarterly historical publication going to all Park Alumni. She, like her husband, was a recipient of the Distinguished Alumna Award. Both Bill and Mary Lou had also been active in church and civic programs. They have two children, one a Park graduate. The Park University Student Association is proud to sponsor this award in the name of Bill and Mary Lou Tipton.

The Outstanding Parkite Award is designed to recognize the Parkville Campus senior man and senior woman who most worthily exemplifies the ideals of Park University in their character, conduct, scholarship, and student involvement.

This award may be given to a faculty or staff member during their first year of service at Park University, to recognize their outstanding performance.

This award may be given to Park employees who best exemplify the caring attitude of a parent toward members of the Park University family. Students nominate individuals who go beyond the expectations of their position to demonstrate care and concern for the well-being of students.

Outstanding Student Organization Advisor Award
The Outstanding Student Organization Advisor Award is given to recognize organization advisors who have achieved excellence in advising Park University student organizations. The award is intended to recognize outstanding contributions and commitments to the organizations they advise. Examples of contributions to be considered include, but are not limited to, advising on campus activities, increasing the organization’s ability to work as a team towards a common goal, and encouragement of cooperation between and among groups and individuals.

Louisa Davidson Hinde/Carolyn Hinde Zarkaryan Memorial Award
This award is presented to individuals who best represent the SPIRIT of Park University. Two students and either an alumni, faculty or staff member are selected annually. The selected recipients promote in others that quality of excellence that has always been associated with a Park University education.

Excellence in Academic Advising Award
This award is given to recognize faculty who have achieved excellence in providing Park University students with capable academic advising and mentoring. The Award is intended to recognize outstanding contributions in helping students define and achieve their academic goals.

Park University Emerging Student Leader Award
Award is granted to a student who is new to Park University this academic year who exemplifies the characteristics of a strong leader, who works effectively with others, has a "service" focused mindset, and approaches tasks with an innovation and creativity.

Dusing-Proudfoot Award
The Dusing-Proudfoot Award is given to honor an outstanding contribution by a faculty or staff member of Park University. It is named in honor of two previous Park University professors, Al Dusing and Merrill Proudfoot. These outstanding professors had been at Park for more than twenty years and are respected for their academic and teaching skills. Both men were concerned about student issues and advocated policies for the betterment of students.

Dr. Doris Howell Leadership Awards
The Dr. Doris Howell Leadership Awards are given to students who distinguish themselves uniquely as leaders regardless of position or title. Recipients will represent the Spirit of a Park University Pirate by: Pursuing integrity in every endeavor; Inclusive as a global citizen; Responsible and respectful in word, work and conduct; Aware of the implications and rewards of their education; Truthful in every action; and Excellence in modeling the Park University lifestyle.

Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award
This award was established by Manuchair Ebadi, ’60, Ph.D., in 1998 to honor Delta W. Gier, Ph.D., former chair of the Department of Chemistry who served Park from 1948 to 1990. The award pays tribute to a faculty member who shows evidence of commitment to high standards of excellence in the area of scholarship: teaching, discovery, integration and/or service. The recipient also shows effective and innovative connections between teaching and research, especially by undergraduate student involvement and participation. The award recipient receives a plaque and monetary gift. In addition, an inscribed name plate will be placed on the Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award wall plaque, located in Mackay Hall, as permanent recognition of the faculty member and the honor.

Distinguished Humanities Faculty Award
This award, established in August 2007 by Manuchair Ebadi, ’60, Ph.D., celebrates the work, life and thoughts of Woodbridge O. Johnson, Ph.D., professor emeritus and chair of religion and Biblical literature at Park from 1946 to 1966. The award is presented to a University faculty member who exhibits extraordinary accomplishments in research or creative scholarship through teaching, discovery, scholarly or creative work, and service. The award recipient receives a plaque and monetary gift. In addition, an inscribed name plate will be placed on the Distinguished Humanities Faculty Award wall plaque, located in Mackay Hall, as permanent recognition of the faculty member and the honor.
