Clubs and OrganizationsStudent Clubs and Organizations at Park University offer the opportunity to be involved in many different ways – on campus, in the community, and online. Please check out the list of active student clubs and see which one is right for you! For more information about any of the clubs, or about the many opportunities for leadership development, civic engagement, fun activities, or educational opportunities outside the classroom, please call staff in the Office of Student Life at (816) 584-6377. You can also speak with other students about clubs and organizations by talking with Park Student Government Association officers in the PSGA office or by calling (816)584-6398. Student Leadership and Engagement events are scheduled throughout the year, with an opportunity for ALL Park University students to learn new skills, develop friendships, and make a difference! Please check online for specific information or call the Coordinator for Student Leadership and Engagement at (816)584-6595. Information about Project Leadership is also available online or in the office. It is a 3-semester program open to all students, with an opportunity for mentoring, leadership, and service. Student organizations are divided in terms of Honor Societies, Program/Subject Area Organizations, Social/Service/Leadership Organizations, Clubs with an International Focus, or Religious/Spiritual Organizations. Current student organizations at Park University include: Honor SocietiesALPHA CHI (CHAPTER: MISSOURI THETA)Alpha Chi is a national scholastic honorary society. Juniors and seniors in the top 10% of their classes are selected by the faculty each year on the basis of leadership, character, and service. Members have opportunities for special research, presentations, and travel, in addition to community service projects and other activities of the organization. A formal induction ceremony for Alpha Chi is held each spring. DR. CAROL SANDERS, (816)584-6250, carol.sanders@park.edu ALPHA KAPPA DELTAAlpha Kappa Delta (AKD), the International Sociology Honor Society, will have a new chapter at Park University in Fall, 2007. AKD was founded in 1920 to provide a forum for student and faculty interchange and is dedicated to promoting, facilitating, and recognizing academic scholarship. Since its inception, over 80,000 scholars have been initiated into the Society and over 490 chapters have been chartered internationally. DR. KEVIN PAYNE, (816)584-6556, kevin.payne@park.edu PHI ALPHA THETA/ZETA OMICRONA professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among students and historians. We seek to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways. TIM WESTCOTT, (816)584-6364, tim.westcott@park.edu PI SIGMA ALPHA (ALPHA DELTA UPSILON CHAPTER)Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society, is the only honor society for college students of political science and government in the United States. Pi Sigma Alpha was founded in 1920 for the purpose of bringing together students and faculty interested in the study of government and politics. Membership in Pi Sigma Alpha is open to juniors, seniors, and graduate students currently enrolled in institutions where chapters are located. DR. JAMES F. Involved students work with the English Club on projects such as The Scribe (Park's literary journal) and also participate in international conferences of Sigma Tau Delta. DR. JANE WOOD, (816)584-6313, jane.wood@park.edu Program/Subject Area OrganizationsASSOCIATION FOR COMPUTING MACHINERY (ACM)ACM is an educationalandprofessional computing student chapter belonging to the National Organization of ACM. By providing a professional and informative structure, ACM members gain added specialized experience not found in the classroom. Additionally, students socialize with professionals in the community, giving them an opportunity to promote their career. The organization encourages participation, volunteering, social networking, and communication skills. Membership is open to everyone. WILLIAM VENABLE, (816)5584-6003, william.venable@park.edu ASSOCIATION FOR SUPERVISION AND CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT (ASCD)ASCD is a nonprofit membership organization created by, and for, educators of all kinds. Active members can go online for hundreds of searchable publications, periodicals, and archives of information. The group plans several events during the year of interest to education majors, and sometimes participates in local or regional conferences. The club organizes a number of activities each year, including education, social, community service, and fund-raising events. DR. TIM GABOR, (816)584-6869, tim.gabor@park.edu C.H.E.M. CLUBThe CHEM Club (Chemists Have Explosive Minds) promotes chemistry awareness in the community. CHEM Club members also help in mentoring freshmen and guiding each other to find internships and employment. Other activities include inviting speakers on campus, attending regional and national meetings, food drives, and picnics. DR. LORA COHN, (816) 584-6311, lora.cohn@park.edu CRIMINAL JUSTICE CLUBThe Criminal Justice Club promotes awareness of issues in law enforcement and corrections, by offering prison tours, police agency visits, and community service projects. The group publishes The Scribe, a literary journal that highlights work submitted by students, faculty, staff, and others, and hosts poetry readings and other activities on a regular basis. DR. JANE WOOD, (816)584-6313, jane.wood@park.edu HEALING EXPRESSIVE ARTS THERAPIES CLUB (HEAT)The purpose of the HEAT Club is to introduce students interested in theatre, art, music, film and psychology to a collaboration of techniques from these fields that are helpful to healing. In addition, these techniques – especially Playback Theatre, will be demonstrated to community organizations and schools to showcase how Park University is training students to do cutting edge creative techniques that can make a real contribution and difference in society. Park University is a Campus Center supported by the Mid-America chapter of IIDA, and Park's student chapter provides membership in IIDA, a professional liaison, and admission to IIDA's monthly educational and networking events. PARK UNIVERSITY STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINERS' ASSOCIATION (PUSATA)This group provides an opportunity for social interaction and learning opportunities among the students in this major. Members of the association are involved with the Missouri Athletic Trainer's Association, Mid-American Athletic Trainers' Association and the National Athletic Trainer's Association. The Online Social Psychology club will: 1) increase awareness of the opportunities in the field of psychology, 2) create a forum for those people interested in learning more about psychology to gather information and participate in the field, and 3) facilitate involvement in psychological issues, such as relevant community service projects, leadership roles in this organization, and participation in professional enhancement activities relevant to the field. Run by teachers, they are the leading advocates for students, teachers and public schools, encompassing a nation-wide network. The SNA involves itself in many health related community activities, such as health screenings and education, and consults with the Director of the Nursing Program on potential program changes. The Student Nurses Association is currently open to participants who are members of the nursing program and LPN's who would like to apply to the program and are current Park University students. Its mission is to prepare campus and community leaders through service. Its purpose is to develop leadership, to promote friendship and to provide service to humanity. This service organization was active at Park University many years ago, and current members are excited to start it again. DANCING PIRATESThe purpose of the Dancing Pirates is to promote and encourage university and team spirit. Team members have fun, while developing lifelong friendships, sharing creativity, enhancing physical fitness and promoting a positive image for fellow students. PSGA helps explore campus issues of importance to Park University students and initiates campus activities and involvement opportunities for the Parkville Campus and beyond. Student Senate certifies new student organizations, oversees the Student Life fee and provides funding and assistance to student clubs. The PSGA also nominates students to various administrative committees at Park, to ensure students' voices are heard when decisions are made about the future of the institution. Meetings are held at 12:30 pm Wednesdays, in the Louise Morden Board Room of the Academic Underground (Park Commons), during the fall and spring semesters.
