Mental Health by the Month
Recommendations for Staying Sane During the Academic Year
October
National Depression Screening Day
Feeling low or overwhelmed? Attend National Depression Screening Day hosted
by the Counseling Center on Thursday, October 8th from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. You can make an appointment with a counselor when you
complete the screening, or you can make one sooner by emailing
counselingappointments@park.edu.
Body and Mind
Research
continues to support the case that physical exercise helps with depression,
anxiety, and mental disorders in general, not to mention just plain old stress.
Home campus has the Pirate Fitness Center in the Field House and Intramurals
Center next to Breckon Sports Center. Make sure you bring
your Park ID with you. Call for hours: (816)584-6425.
Keeping up with all of your obligations is tough enough without getting the
flu. Flu shots will be available at the
Platte County Health Department
beginning October 29th. The cost is $20 and does not require an
appointment. The
Take Care
Clinic is another nearby option, and that costs about $25 and does not
require an appointment. Wash your hands often to prevent contagion, and if
you do get sick, stay home!
Midterms Loom
Fifty to 90 minutes is the optimal chunk of time for studying before taking
a 15-minute break. Remember to review your lecture notes and required reading
everyday in order to avoid cramming.
Determine if you focus better in the morning or at night, and block off that
time for review. Has your performance been less than ideal? Communicate your
concern to your professor and assess whether or not you can successfully
complete the class.
HarvestFest
Feeling pressure to take a date? It’s perfectly acceptable to take a friend,
go in a group,
or boldly go stag. Remember, spunky, independent people like
Rhett Butler,
Madame Olinska,
Sabrina
Fairchild, and brooding
Mr. Darcy were
known to attend events unescorted. You aren’t obligated to dance with one person
the whole night! Keep a cool head and stay
within your budget when it comes to getting decked out for this semi-formal
event.
Be Proactive
Career Development holds a GRE prep session in
October. Tackle this now to decrease anxiety when it's time to
take the GRE.
Get Away From It All
Take a daytrip to Weston, Missouri, less
than 30 minutes north of Parkville. Visit the
Weston Bend State Park
and get a workout on the hiking trails along historic, pioneer paths. Then visit
Vaughn Apple Orchard (816-386-2900) for apple picking, slushies, and fritters.
Halloween
Kansas City’s Haunted Houses
Keep on the lookout for “It’s the
Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” (1966). Lucy has a
wonderful Jungian suggestion when she says, “A person should always choose a
costume that is in direct contrast to her own personality.” Use the holiday to
learn about your shadow.
