Financial EmergencyMany traditional and non-traditional students experience overwhelming financial stress. This issue can interfere with academic performance and class attendance as well as contribute to depression and anxiety. These local organizations can assist students with paying rent or mortgage, utilities, and help with groceries. They may also be able to help with unique circumstances. Many agencies must adhere to federal income guidelines of household income. Kansas City's Heart of America United Way: (816) 474-5112, or dial 211 and submit your zip code. HAUW's 211 program is a 24-hour referral service to other agencies that can help with a person's particular situation. Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries: (816) 454-5295. If the student qualifies, MLM can help with utilities if the student can present a shut-off notice AND if MLM has the funds to help the student at that point in time. If a student has an eviction notice, MLM can help with rent or the mortgage, but only if funds are available. Northland Assistance Center: (816) 421-2243. This organization provides assistance to Clay County and part of Platte County. United Services: (816) 858-5153.
